Mechanical water pumps are mounted on the engine block from the outside and can be replaced without having to open the engine itself. Mechanical water pumps are driven by V-belts or poly-rib belts depending on their installation location in the engine. Electrically driven water pumps work independently from the engine and according to demand. When water pumps fail, the engine overheats, which can result in serious engine damage. 13 Mechanical water pumps The cooling liquid absorbs the heat from the engine block and cylinder head and releases it into the ambient air through the radiator. Depending on their design, mechanical water pumps are located either externally on the engine in their own pump housing or are flanged directly on the crankcase. When reconditioning the engine, the water pump should always be replaced to ensure operational safety. Water circulating pumps Water circulating pumps have a built-in electric motor and are installed decentralised on the engine. They are used where cooling or heating functions need to be performed independently of the engine's coolant circuit. - For heating support, residual heat extraction and auxiliary heating. - As a cooling application for turbochargers, power electronics and exhaust gas recirculation. - For cooling drive train and batteries in electric vehicles. Electric coolant pumps The electric coolant pump has an integrated electronic control. It is activated continuously when cooling is required. The electric coolant pump is also able to generate sufficient cooling capacity when idling or after the engine is switched off because it is not linked to the engine speed. 14 Oil pumps Product range Oil pumps with push-in drive Oil pumps with gear drive Oil pumps with direct drive via the crankshaft Oil pumps in Focus Oil pumps deliver the oil from the oil pan through the oil filter and oil cooler to the engine lubricating points. An oil pump can be driven by external teeth, internal toothing for crankshaft direct drives or auxiliary drives. Oil pumps are generally replaced in their entirety. They are not intended to be reconditioned. Oil pumps have a long service life, but this may be reduced by maintenance errors, poor oil quality, oil dilution, dirt or engine damage. It may therefore be necessary to change the oil pump early. In modern passenger cars and commercial vehicles, regulated oil pumps are used that deliver the oil flow in a demand-based manner and save fuel. 15 Gear-wheel pumps are mostly in the form of push-on pumps, or pumps with gear or chain drive. These pumps are driven indirectly by the crankshaft. are easy to replace due to their design. Crescent oil pumps are situated on the control side of the crankshaft and are driven directly by it. The advantage of crescent pumps lies in their high delivery rate, particularly at low engine speeds. Rotor pumps are situated, like crescent oil pumps, on the control side of the crankshaft, which is the direct source of their drive.
