An industrial demonstration of biorefinery of lipids: Coproduction of biodiesel and 1,3-propandiol Dehua Liu Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University
outlines 1. Production of biodiesel with non-edible oils by enzymatic catalysis 2. Utilization of by-product crude glycerol for production of 1,3-propanediol
1. Production of biodiesel with nonedible oils by enzymatic catalysis
Biodiesel : defined as a substitute for, or an additive to diesel fuel that is derived from oils and fats of plants and animals CH 2 -OOC-R 1 CH-OOC-R 2 + 3R OH Catalyst R 1 -COOR' R 2 -COOR' CH 2 -OH CH-OH CH 2 OH R 3 -COOR' CH 2 -OOC-R 3 Glycerides Biodiesel Glycerol Catalyst R-COOH + R OH R-COOR + H 2 O Chemical approaches (alkali, acid) Transesterification at supercritical condition Enzymatic approaches (lipase)
Chemical ways Supercritical fluid systems Acid/alkali High temperature and pressure Waste water containing acid or alkaline requires extra treatment; it has high requirements for oil feedstocks quality especially with alkali as the catalyst. Much water needed to wash product. It is energy and capital intensive with reaction carried out at high temperature and high pressure conditions. Enzymatic ways lipase The transesterification can be performed under mild reaction conditions and the whole production process is environmentally friendly. Reducing the lipase cost is the key for lipase-mediated biodiesel production. Wash is not necessary. High cost of lipase is the major hurdle to the industrialization!
How to reduce the lipase cost is the key point Developing new lipases or improving the performance of lipases Maximizing/Extending the operational life of lipase
Negative effect oil lipase + Biodiesel + methanol glycerol Poor stability and activity of the lipase should be due to the negative effect of methanol and glycerol. With TU s novel technology, the negative effect of both methanol and glycerol on enzyme activity could be greatly eliminated Relative activity of the lipase(%) Cycle
