With several members bringing their latest and ongoing creations to the meeting, they each in turn stepped forward to give a brief description - see following pages for details and photos. Terry noted that Saturday, Feb. 24, a group from Ryerson University came to use our field for a test flight. They were part of the heavy lift competition that is held yearly in the USA. It was hoped that a small contingent would be able to attend this meeting and explain the project, but unfortunately due to exams they were not able to come. Unfortunately the field was really too soft and they were not able to get a flight test, only a minimal ground taxi. Some of you may remember back in 2011 that my son Eric was also in this program and I went with him and his group to Atlanta for the competition. It was really interesting to see the creations from university entries all over the world. The year my son was involved their team won first place in Design for regular class. He has now worked for more than five years in the landing gear design department of UTC Aerospace Systems in Oakville. (Editor s note - As a proud father I had to get that in! Eric has the white BB cap)

This year was based on the use of more traditional construction techniques without composites and with the power required to be electric - max. 1000W. Some of the construction design was most interesting. This year the competition will be in California which means they will be flying with their creation and accessories. In past years they have driven (I know, I did most of the driving almost non-stop to Atlanta with a large airframe and wings in my van)

The body is in the shape of an airfoil to add to the lift.

4 OMFC Fliteline - Page 4 One of the goals this year was to have a combination of passengers and cargo. The passengers are tennis balls which can be seen being loaded onto the aircraft. The cargo goes ahead and below. The body is in the shape of an airfoil to add to the lift. They use traditional control surfaces and lots of tape to hold things together! We wish them much success in their upcoming competition in Van Nuys, CA on April 6-8. See link for info

OMFC Fliteline - Page 5 De Miles Magister Ron spoke about his scratch built WWII trainer and some of the challenges and methods he used to overcome them.

He showed a fabric that is heat shrinkable and will be applied with dope over the balsa covering. The Miles M.

Affectionately known as the Maggie, the Magister was based on Miles' civilian Hawk Major and Hawk Trainer and was the first monoplane designed specifically as a trainer for the RAF.

The cowling (made from eavestrough material) is impressive with the maple nose. (.61 OS engine). He showed a fabric that is heat shrinkable and will be applied with dope over the balsa covering. The Miles M.14 Magister is a British two-seat monoplane basic trainer aircraft built by the Miles Aircraft for the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm. Affectionately known as the Maggie, the Magister was based on Miles' civilian Hawk Major and Hawk Trainer and was the first monoplane designed specifically as a trainer for the RAF. As a low-wing monoplane, it was an ideal introduction to the Spitfire and Hurricane for new pilots. (Wikipedia) Messerschmitt Bf 109F Jim showed his China Models ARF which he bought online from a US site. It has a 72 wingspan, an OS23 gas engine 16 prop, and is mostly fiberglass. He noted that the instructions don t have any text, only pictographs! It is a little overweight at 13.5lbs and needs to lose a little.

Zero Mike enlarged his existing Royal plans to make this 84 model with OS160 twin engine with 16x8, 3 blade prop. Will have the 3/32 balsa covered by tissue paper thin carbon fiber, followed by fiberglass. It has a massive wing. He is aiming for 17lbs flying weight. It is from a plan that was in the August 1989 issue of Model Aviation as no kit exists. It has a.45 engine, it cannot tip stall, goes quite fast and flies normally. He started it about 9 years ago and covered it about 4 years ago, only finishing this past Christmas. He said it is going to be one of these fly or die things. I D Know ACE, Maybe OL Chip needs some new glasses..he drew this one all backwards!
