5 HOW TO MAKE WASTE HEAT RECOVERY? Rankine cycle principle Converting heat to work by transferring heat from a hot source to a cold sink via a working fluid ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) in case the working fluid is of organic type Working fluid Boiler Heat flux Hot source Liquid Vapor High pressure Pump Low pressure Cold sink Condenser Expander with generator I F P E N

6 HOW TO CONVERT HEAT INTO ELECTRICITY? Turbo-generator is the key component of the system: 1. Turbine stage converts working fluid pressure into mechanical torque 1- High pressure working fluid 2- Pressure to torque conversion 2. The torque drives the electric generator 3. The generator converts torque into electricity 4- Low pressure working fluid 3- Electricity production I F P E N

7 WHERE ARE ORC IN THE MOBILITY DOMAIN? All truck manufacturers are today developing ORC systems (Volvo, Cummins, Hino ) Application target: long haul trucks Expected onto the market in (upcoming CO2 regulations for trucks in USA and Europe) ORC prototype for a truck (Courtesy from Renault Trucks) I F P E N

8 WHERE ARE ORC IN THE MOBILITY DOMAIN? Recently, ENOGIA and IFPEN have realized and tested an ORC for a Diesel train application for ALSTOM Transport Car industry is also exploring this solution Honda or BMW, for example, have already presented prototype cars fitted with ORC ORC prototype for a Diesel powered, regional train. 9 WHAT ABOUT RANKINE CYCLE AND ORC IN SHIPS? Rankine first time in the 1970 s in US and in Europe (Oil crisis) Steam Rankine widely used in marine for propulsion and WHR on large vessels Wärtsilä WHR for large container ships with turbogenerator supplying both assisted propulsion and ship s service power (12% fuel savings 2005) Only few examples for low to medium power vessels Voith Steam track 3% fuel savings 2011 Wärtsilä WHR arrangement Voith Steam track I F P E N

10 WHAT ABOUT RANKINE CYCLE AND ORC IN SHIPS? 2011: Wärtsilä Marine Engine Combined Cycle (ECC). It uses an ORC as waste heat recovery system (8-12% fuel savings) 2016: A small 125 kwe ORC unit onboard Maersk container ship. It recovers waste heat in the water jacket of the main engine 125 kw ORC onboard container ship I F P E N

11 ENOGIA AND IFPEN PARTNERSHIP ENOGIA was founded in It proposes a range of ORC products for stationary applications ENOGIA and IFPEN have signed a partnership agreement in 2014 Based on the knowledge and experience of ENOGIA in ORCs, and of the skills of IFPEN in the mobility domain, we are now developing together ORC products for the mobile applications EfficientShip project is a very interesting opportunity to demonstrate the interest of waste heat recovery in fishing vessels ORC turbogenerator for passenger car ORC turbopump for truck I F P E N

12 ENOGIA S ORC PRODUCTS FOR STATIONARY APPLICATIONS To date, more than 40 units have been sold by ENOGIA, in more than 10 countries: «ENO-10» (for engines up to 200 kw) «ENO-20» (for engines up to 400 kw) «ENO-40» (for engines up to 800 kw) ENO-40 on a biomass boiler I F P E N ENO-10 on a combined heat and power biogas engine
