3 Report From PPCC President Patricia Fox Corvairs everywhere at the Salida Tri State and nice weather too! Great People at a Great Location. Sort of an unmentioned tradition-the girls went window shopping. The guys were so busy with the show, it does not appear they missed us. We shared, we laughed, we made a few purchases. So next year the Tri State is in Cripple Creek, CO! The goal is record attendance numbers from all clubs of Corvairs & their owners, hopefully hitting all time highs in all categories. The host hotel is able to accommodate our every need and willing to work with us with our many requests. So many have come forward saying help is there if needed - thank you so very much It appears we are experiencing some ups & downs in club participation. My goal this year is to encourage everyone to be creative and help with something they enjoy. It can be anything from goodie bag items, help with registration, planning, tours, anything to contribute to our clubs. s are received between meetings suggesting we meet with others at various car events. John K A NEW 65 Convertible Now that I have you attention, I d like to tell you about the fabulous Corvair that was at this year s Tri-State. No, it s not brand new, it s BETTER than brand new! Corvairs of New Mexico member Tarmo Sutt spent more than 11 years blueprinting every part, every screw, every spring, everything you can imagine to make this car better than new. Only 24 miles on it since the restoration and it looks better in person than in the photo. Volume 36, Number 8 June 2012 Page 3

4 Race Against Kids Cancer The Rocky Mountain CORSA and Pikes Peak Corvair clubs have been invited to display their cars at the High Plains Raceway (HPR) on July 21 and July 22. There will be separate parking for Club cars. The Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing (RMVR) club is the host and there will be a full weekend of Vintage Car Racing. Our clubs will be able to do Parade laps (with a slow pace car) for free. RMVR is also asking that we take another parade Session with a "donor paid" passenger. RMVR is planning on selling "Parade Lap Ride" tickets and asking the club cars to help us provide those rides. There is no entry or entrance fee per se. However, RMVR is asking everyone coming in the gate to make a small (or large, if you will) Morgan Adams Foundation (MAF) contribution. A $5 per car kind of thing. But the showing of the cars and participating in the parade session is free. There are Parade Sessions on both Sat. and Sun afternoons. Interested parties need to provide Larry Schubert with a head/car count at the May meeting (or larry@schuberts.com) so he can provide the information to the RMVR staff. Details of the event can be found at: HPR is located 17 miles east of Byers on Hwy 36 and driving time is between 1 and 1 ½ hours from Castle Rock. Tri-State Wrap Up Another Tri-State goes down in the record books and this one was really great thanks to Chairman Steve Goodman s outstanding efforts and preplanning. Weather couldn t have been more perfect and it was a nice hotel located in the beautiful mountain town of Salida. Attendance this year was especially impressive. 5 New Member Application The, Inc., (PPCC) was formed in September of 1977 by a group of enthusiasts from the Pikes Peak Region to preserve the Corvair automobile & related artifacts. Ownership of a Corvair is not required for membership. PPCC is a chartered chapter of CORVAIR SOCIETY OF AMERICA (CORSA). Mailing address is:, PO Box 15034, Colorado Springs, CO The purpose of PPCC is to drive your Corvair on tours, car shows, parades, plus attend technical sessions & social events: all geared toward the enjoyment of the CORVAIR automobile. Monthly meetings are held on the 2 nd Sunday of each month at 9:30 a.m. in the meeting room of Golden Corral on Woodmen Rd. west of Powers (north side). Joining PPCC is important whether you are just beginning to restore your CORVAIR (the parts & technical sources are invaluable), or if you have a finished vehicle, are ready to drive & have fun. Dues for the PPCC are $25.00 per year. It is a requirement to belong to CORSA. If you are not a member, you must remit $45.00, either to CORSA or include with your PPCC dues for a total of $ The CORSA dues will be forwarded to the CORSA home office. 6 FOR CORVAIR LOVERS Before I first visited Gettysburg in 2005, I researched and read about the three day civil war battle and the historic sites I planned to visit. During my visit I spent as much time as I could visiting those sites and trying to visualize the events during the battle. This was before I restarted my efforts to get my Corvair on the road. Since that first visit, I have learned that less than eight miles from Gettysburg is one of the largest collections of Corvairs anywhere! The Corvair Ranch, located in rural Pennsylvania had its beginnings in the early 70 s as a hobby by John Goulden. It officially became the Corvair Ranch in 1986 when Jeff Stonesifer became its current owner. Their business is dedicated to complete Corvair-only service. ( On my second visit to Gettysburg, the Corvair Ranch happened to be hosting their annual Open House. A minor schedule change on my part allowed us to arrive in Gettysburg that day. Their open house also serves as a venue for members of the Central Pennsylvania Corvair Club (CPCC) to gather and show off their cars. Sara and I visited with several members including Sandy Holmes (CPCC Treasurer) who reminisced about her visits to Colorado. The open house allowed us to explore the property. The first thing you see is the maintenance shop that includes the office, three maintenance bays, the machine shop, several other rooms with some parts storage. Behind the workshop you ll find several other buildings and trailers used for more parts storage. Between the buildings you ll find piles of what are left of front suspensions, looking like rusty bones. On the right, engines picked clean of their most usable parts. Continuing on into the graveyard you see all models of Corvairs in orderly rows as if it was once a parking lot. Their web site says over 600 Corvairs. Early models, late models, greenbriers, Lakewood s, and rampsides organized by rows. It was walking in a park; the grass between the rows was recently mowed. 7 The DRIPLINE the cars I pointed out to Sara the different models. She decided she liked the early station wagons, Lakewood I porests. I should have prepared a better litely corrected. She also though the list because I know there were more eight window vans Greenbrier were cool, too. Some say the original minivan. On our way out I took one last walk parts I will someday need. Corvair Ranch is one more thing I can cross off of my Corvair Bucket list. among the drivers wondering how much longer before I can drive mine. Later that week I went back to pick up some parts for my 68 Monza. 9 The DRIPLINE Minutes of the May 16 Meeting President Patricia Fox opened the meeting at 6:37 There were 15 in attendance including 3 children. Guests Nancy Feldman and Roger Singer were present. Nancy s family has a long history with Corvairs. They have had as many as 31 at one time and are now down to about eleven. She joined the club. Garrie Fox moved that the minutes from the last two meetings be accepted as published. John Glusick seconded the motion. Paul Campbell delivered the Treasurer s report as John Koll was not present. The Treasury has about $3088. Paul also reminded members to submit any articles/ information they may like to see in the Dripline to pdtcamp@yahoo.com Garrie Fox reported he contacted all Dripline business card advertisers. Please let Paul know if you have any changes in your phone numbers, or snail-mail address. The Tri-State in Salida was a success. There were 43 Corvairs present. PPCC members attending were Kelly and Mary Lynn Westerfield, Garrie and Patricia Fox, Randy Karl, Wayne and Bonni Russert and Paul and Pat Campbell. It was suggested that the PPCC banner be brought to all meetings. The 2013 Tri-State will be in Cripple Creek. The date is May 31-June/2. Patricia is checking out T-shirt possibilities. John Glusick wondered if we could get Chevy jackets from Al Serra Chevrolet. Patricia Fox said she would check into it. Paul Campbell will bring club business cards to the next meeting for anyone who wishes to have them to distribute. Mark King is moving and needs to sell Corvair parts. Contact him if you are in need. Colfax Cruise will take place on 9/15/12. John Glusick suggested that we may want to get a group (must be 10) or more to work as volunteers for Old Car Council events.
