Thanks Ernie, Mike, Katy and crew! We had the most members that I ve ever seen at a SEGTOA Picnic. Terrific weather, wonderful food and lots of fun. The desserts were FANTASTIC. 3 SEGTOA Save The Date! 2017 Events Monday September 4 Saturday Sept. 16 Saturday October 14 November 3-6 December Holy Smoke Festival Car Show Hubcaps & History Old Downtown Marietta Get together & BBQ at the Links Tail of the Dragon trip SEGTOA Christmas Party On page 5 is the flyer for the Holy Smoke Festival Car Show at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church on Labor Day, Monday September 4th. Club member Bo Dunn coordinates the car show part of this festival. It s BIG! Food vendors, stuff for the kids, and of course, many cars. It s at 955 Johnson Ferry Road, Marietta, FREE Registration starts at 9AM, awards are at 1:45PM. Cars and trucks only, 1986 and older. Though this is not our official event for September, let s get out there and support Bo. Our official September event is Hubcaps and History, a nice smaller show in Old Downtown Marietta. We usually get a pretty good group at this show, and it s always a good time. We ll you regarding meeting up and entering together. See page 6. John & Kevin Link have graciously opened their home to us on Saturday October 14th for our October get-together. You will receive additional s with details as the date aproaches. Another chance to get your Pontiac out and hang out with club members. The annual Tail of the Dragon overnight trip is shaping up for the first weekend in November. We ll provide informational s as the dates approach. Hotel info for Pontiacs in Pigeon Forge 2018 is on page 7 for those of you who want to get in early to score a primo room at the Music Road Hotel. This is one of the best all- Pontiac shows you ll ever attend. The picnic and Christmas party are the two biggest SEGTOA events of the year, and we d like to see them get even bigger. The more people we can get at these events, the more fun they are. The Tail of the Dragon overnight trip never disappoints, and we d like to see a few more cars and people for that one as well. 4 Picnic Recap Saturday, August 5 It may have been record attendance this year, and we definitely had a whole slew of cars: 23 at last count, one of which was Ben Hatfield s newly retored 1965 GTO, complete with multi-port fuel injection, delivered to the picnic! You should have seen the smile on his face! It was a great day, with great weather and great people. 4

9 Tech Tips: Little-Known Facts By Jim Racela WARNING FOR 64 and 65 GTO MUNCIE 4 SPEED OWNERS! The 65 and earlier versions of the Muncie 4 speed manual transmissions have a Detent Lever Pivot pin that is pressed in from the inside. The pin and hole are located in the upper middle of the side cover. The Detent Cams are mounted on this pivot pin. These detent cams prevent the trans from going into two gears at the same time. After years of use, this pin can loosen and slide into the trans allowing the detent cams to fall into the gears. When this happens, two drive gears will likely be engaged with the Planetary Gear at the same time when shifting. The two different size gears lock up the Planetary Gear breaking off teeth and jamming the gears. This results not only in catastrophic damage to the trans but also a sudden and immediate stop for your GTO! Starting in the 1966 model year, Muncie changed the Detent Pivot Pin. They added a shoulder to the pin and it was installed from the outside through the side cover. A locking ring was installed on the pin on the inside to hold it permanently in place. Problem solved. You can check to see if the Detent Pin is shouldered over the hole by looking at the side cover. If not, you can purchase a shouldered replacement pin. This is cheap insurance and well worth doing if you have a pressed in pin. Many 65 and earlier Muncies that have been rebuilt had the pin replaced, but not always. It is easy to check, inexpensive and not hard to replace with the trans in the car. Most good Trans Shops can do it if you do not want to try it yourself. Here is a link to a company that sells the shouldered pin for less than $8 plus shipping. MY STEERING WHEEL IS NOT ROUND? If you have a 65 or 66 GTO with the original plastic Deluxe steering wheel, it is slightly oval shaped, not round. Pontiac did this to ease entry into and exit from the driver s seat and also to allow for more legroom. I measured mine for this article. It is 16 across and only 15 top to bottom. It sure looks round and I ll bet most owners think theirs is too but will be out measuring their wheel! I have never measured an optional 65 or 66 NOS wood wheel. I suspect these are oval also. If they are, it would be interesting to see if the aftermarket reproduction original wood wheels are oval also. Continued 9

10 Tech Tips, Continued I am not sure when Pontiac changed back to a round steering wheel. I know the 67 GTO went to the collapsing steering column with a redesigned steering wheel. If you see me with a tape measure around your 67 or later GTO, don t be alarmed GTO TAMPER RESISTANT ODOMETERS In 1970, Pontiac designed their odometers to be tamper resistant. Between each number there is a black line. If one of the odometer numbers is rolled back, that line turns white! Simple but effective. How many 70 and later owners are running out to look at theirs right now? WHAT S IN A NAME? In ads for the 64 GTO and early on for the 65, Pontiac referred to the tires with the thin red stripes as Red Circle Tires. The last time using this name was in an ad for a 65 GTO released in December The first ad I have seen calling these Red Line Tires on a 65 GTO was in April Pontiac always referred to those tires as Red Lines after that. SUPER TURBINE 300 Most Pontiac folks know that GM would not allow engines larger than 330 cubic inch engines to be installed in their Intermediate sized cars. John DeLorean famously got around that by making the 389 a part of the GTO option on the 64 Lemans and the rest is history. What many folks do not know is that through the 1966 model year, the GM Intermediates, including the GTO, were only offered with a 2 speed transmission when the optional automatic was ordered. For B.O.P. cars, that meant a Super Turbine 300 or ST-300. The ST-300 transmissions are often confused with and called a Powerglide which they are not. The Powerglide was a Chevrolet transmission and although it was a 2 speed automatic also, it does not share any internal parts with the ST-300 including the aluminum case and bolt pattern. - Jim Racela 10

11 Tech Tips: Addendum In order to give a visual on how the secret Pontiac Rally Sports Speed Shifter works as explained by Jim Racela in last month s Tiger Tales, here s a link to a video that shows you how it operates: Tech Tips: Maybe I m Getting Old By John Link I was at a national Irish auto parts outlet the other day and needed oil for my lawn tractor. I couldn t remember what grade my mower used, so I asked the counter person which grade my John Deere X540 mower used. The answer: We don t have a way to find out what oil your mower uses. HUH?!? It took me about 2 minutes to go to Google on my phone and find the correct oil. I know they have the internet on their computers because they can check competitors info. What should the answer have been? Maybe Give me a couple of minutes and I ll look it up. They weren t busy and had 3 people working the counter. Ok, got my oil, filter, headlight bulb, etc. and thought, I get a military discount here, plus their rewards rebate program, Why not a SEGTOA discount for all our members? So, I asked for the Manager. I introduced myself, explained that I was the President of the Southeastern GTO Association, with over 100 members in Georgia and wanted to know who I could talk to about a discount program for our members. He looked at me and asked What s a GTO? I know what a Mustang GTO is. HUH?!? He then gave me a local manager s phone number, who I called and talked with. That was last week, no reply yet. 12 Tech Tips: It happened to me too Some time ago, I wrote about a wheel on David Peebles GTO almost coming off due to a faulty/cracked wheel stud hole. Saturday after the Dallas Cruise-in, I drove home after dark up I-75 at 70 mph. Took my GTO to church Sunday morning, no problem. Left church to go to lunch and I hear a CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK from my front end. Checked my wheels at the restaurant. The front drivers side wheel was about to come off and all 4 wheels had loose lug nuts!! The Lord was looking after me!! When I reinstall a wheel I torque the lug nuts, PERIOD!! I have had my wheels off many times but they were torqued when they were reinstalled. Why were my lug nuts loose? I don t have tools at my new house (no jack, lug wrench, torque wrench, etc.) to pull my wheels and find out what s going on, but I will! The reason for this article is to AGAIN remind all our members that our cars (and in many cases the wheels) are 50+ years old. Tires AND steel wheels take a lot of abuse over the years.
