See www. callawaygardens.com/info/calendar Next Meeting may 7 6:30 PM American Pie Maple St. President s Message Our Georgia weather seems to be warming up as we move into May, and the local cruise nights have started once again. Please help us promote our June 13th car show by handing out our flyers if you go to the local car shows, cruise nights or (this year) arts & crafts shows. We had over 80 cars and trucks show up last year and it would be nice to duplicate or surpass our 2014 record. To do so we must publicize the event early and often. Please help us out. We want to welcome our new club members, Wayne and Polly Hubbard, who attended our April meeting and got to meet some of us. They have an old Model A Ford (is there a new Model A Ford?), so let s help them out with its refurbishment and maintenance. I will add them to our club listserv and directory. We hope the Hubbards enjoy their experiences with us! We appreciate any help from our club members in getting a trophy sponsor or two for our car show in June. The cost is $30 per trophy and the sponsor may pick any class not yet taken (Ford is the only one sold so far). Members may also sponsor a trophy and this has happened often in the past. Also, let any of your friends who make and sell arts and crafts know about this new component of our show this year so that it will be a successful and memorable element. I thought that perhaps an informative and fun addition to our great club newsletter, The Greasy Rag, might be an occasional short feature about the car or cars we own. Why don t we consider writing up a story about our car its history and features and send it along with a photo or two to our editor Liz. During those months when we don t have a special club event to recap, she could run your story and we can learn when and where you acquired your pride and joy, and a little bit about your future plans for the vehicle. Just an idea Our next meeting is once again at American Pie at 6:30 pm on Thursday, May 7th. Our agenda will include further discussion of our car show and other activities coming up between now and then. We will have more show flyers for our members to pick up if they like. And we will again have a special video program to inform and enlighten. Although Debbie and I will be unable to attend, Geoff has kindly agreed to preside and conduct our business meeting. 3 The Bobby Darin "Dream Car When fins were in. The 1960 DiDia 150 was a luxury, customdesigned iconic, handmade car also known as the "Dream Car" forever associated with its second owner, singer Bobby Darin. Built in Detroit, Michigan, clothing designer Andrew 'Andy' Di Dia designed this "unrestrained and unconventional" automobile. Only one example was ever built. Bobby Darin had met Andy Di Dia while on tour in Detroit in 1957.[ Darin telling Di Dia at the time that he would purchase the car if he ever "hit it big". For seven years, from 1953 to 1960 the DiDia 150 was hand-built by four workers, at a cost of $93,647.29[ but sold to Darin in 1961 at a cost of over $150,000 (1.5 million today). At the time the car was listed as most expensive "custom-made" car in the world by the Guinness Book of Records. The body was hand-formed by Ron Clark and constructed by Bob Kaiser from Clark Kaiser Customs. Darin drove his wife, Sandra Dee, in the car to the 34th Academy Awards in The normal V8 engine is located at the front, being a petrol V engine with eight cylinders driving a central crankshaft and an engine displacement of 365/427.It has a rear-wheel drive, the body and chassis is hand-formed from 064 aluminum with a unitized alloy tube frame. It has a glass cockpit in back, a squared steering wheel resembling a superellipse (with n = 3 2, a = b = 1) and thermostatically controlled air conditioning system. The interior is rust colored in contrast to the ruby paintwork. The design included the first backseat-mounted radio speakers and hidden windshield wipers that started themselves when it rained. Other features include retractable headlamps, rear indicators that swivel as the car turns, 'floating' bumpers and a trunk that was hinged from the driver's side. Each of the four 3

4 bucket seats have their own thermostatically controlled air conditioning, individual cigarette lighters and ashtrays, as well as a radio speaker. The original engine, a Cadillac V8, was later replaced by a 427 high-performance by Ford when it was taken on the show circuit. Di Dia toured the car around the country, when Darin wasn't using it for public appearances. After publicity and film use, Darin donated his "Dream Car" to the St Louis Museum of Transportation in 1970 where it remains. 6 ANTIQUE AUTO CLUB OF AMERICA WEST GEORGIA REGION TREASURER S REPORT & MINUTES FROM 04/02/15 1. Called to order: 7:00PM by Glenn Novak. 2. Minutes of March meeting approved. 3. Old Business: Discussion on car show: a. Show will be held at Mike Bell Chevrolet on June 13th, with a rain date of June 20th. b. Show flyers were completed in time for April 21 Golden City Cruise and distributed into each car attending. c. 100 more flyers were available at the meeting for members to distribute. Numerous cruises, craft and art shows are coming to our area in the next few weeks. Distributing flyers at these events will attract car participants and vendors to our show. d. Zach Bell is fine with hosting more than just the car show. Vendor spaces will be the same $20 as a car entrant. Vendor spaces must be reserved in advance, and some screening should be considered to minimize duplications. The back of the flyer has a vendor registration form included. e. Trophies will be sponsored like last year. Sponsorships for trophy classes must be cleared to prevent duplication. We already have one trophy sponsor. Frank Hummel Jr. is creating three non-class special trophies for the show. f. Club members (only) may show a second car without a registration fee. 4. New Business a. Glenn has received our event insurance through the National AACA. b. Glenn passed a copy of the new Club Directory around for co-ordination signatures from members attending. c. Glenn passed around a copy of the Tanner Hospice flyer showing our club as contributors. d. Glenn/Debbie completed new club membership forms to replace the old ones. 5. Road Atlanta (Braselton) and Barber Motorsports Park (Birmingham AL) have vintage car racing coming up. 6. Polly and Wayne Hubbard attended our meeting and joined our club. They have a Model A Ford that has been in the family for generations. 7. Meeting adjourned at 7:40PM followed by a classic car video showing a 1941 Ford Woodie, and a 1931 Packard.
