No Registration Fee, Peoples Choice Award, Novie Johnson (850) P RESIDENT'S MESSAGE ~ AUGUST 2017 It s almost August and the weather is really hot again! Even the local cruise-ins become difficult to manage with this kind of heat, and everybody seems to be looking for shade. At least some of the old cars have A/C and maybe it even works. We have no events coming up this month for our club members, but if you get any good ideas let us all know through our club listserv. Debbie and I had a very good time on our first national tour July It was not an AACA tour but rather one sponsored by VMCCA and called the Chrome Glidden Tour. People wanting to enjoy their older cars on a tour similar to the famous pre-war Glidden Tour managed to create this event, and it is apparently very popular and successful. The hub this year was in Roanoke, VA and the maximum of 100 cars (mostly post-war) participated. We took our 1964 Buick Wildcat with cold air and put 1566 miles on her. I ll do an article for a future issue of The Greasy Rag and include some photos. Take a look at the sidebar in this issue of The Greasy Rag, as well as the Coming Events section of our website, to see what may be coming up in these next weeks and months. Make sure you have this event on your calendars now: Callaway Hot Air Balloon Festival and Car Show on September 2nd from 9 am to 3 pm. Maybe we can go down there in a caravan. And there are lots of other good things scheduled for September with the weather perhaps starting to cool off. Some other events for your calendar: Cottage Landing show in Carrollton on September 13th at 3 pm (possible dinner to follow) and our annual Christmas Party on the evening of December 16th (entertainment by Karen Vance). And of course the judged car shows with our friends in October in LaGrange and Villa Rica (cooler weather finally). Our annual picnic is November 4th in Roopville at the Duncan s church. 3 The Great Race Report by A LaGrange Native Note: Reprint from Southside A's Taylor Merrill of LaGrange, Georgia and his 1928 Ford Model A Roadster By Taylor Merrill We ended up 59th which wasn't real good, but we did finish. 23 cars, including Chad Caldwell from Newnan didn't make it. It was really a hard race for a Model A. It is amazing that our car finished in fine shape. If you treat 'em right they'll just keep on going. My navigator friend, Noel, went with me in 2011 and hadn't been back in the car to practice since that race. I hadn't done a race for two years so we didn't prepare race-wise very well. Noel turned two pages of instructions at once one day which tends to send you off into never Neverland for a few miles. The car had no problems, other than some operating techniques which I think would be good to relay to other Model A drivers. In Florida and Georgia it was very hot and we drove a lot of 50mph. The car ran fine until we stopped at a stop sign and then we could barely keep it running. We would coax it along until we got enough gas through the carburetor to cool it off and run properly again. The ethanol gas we use nowadays apparently boils at a lower temp and the carburetor wants to "vapor lock". On other occasions when this happened I increased the richness of the gas mixture a little. This didn't seem to help until I really exaggerated the richness which did the trick. Ruined the gas mileage, however. We had another kind of dumb operational issue. One day we pulled into a stop sign and the car just died. I got out and checked the battery cables, then proceeded to check voltage at each point in the circuit and they all checked good. Got in the car and it started and we're off to pass eight cars to make up the eight minutes we lost. We did it! That's where the "racing" comes in. Same thing happened again after lunch one day. After consultation and more thought, here is what we concluded. In an effort to save the battery as I prepared the car for the race, I would disconnect the ground cable on the battery and when I needed to move the car I would just put the terminal back on the post and off we'd go. When we started the race I never tightened the cable with a wrench so between the bouncing around on the road and the heat, we must have lost a good connection and the car died. When I checked the cables I probably twisted them enough to make a good connection again. We had no more problems after we used the wrench. Saw a lot of museums, went over a huge toll bridge to get to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was Fourth of July weekend and the traffic was backed up halfway across the bridge which I didn't particularly enjoy. The last night we stayed in a Great Wolf Lodge, one of which is being built in LaGrange. After spending an evening in the water with our granddaughter, we know what to expect when it opens here. Lots of stories and memories...no flat tires this year.

5 American Austin/Bantam Club is coming to West Georgia in 2018!! Reading Pennsylvania was host to the 54th Annual American Austin/Bantam Club National Meet. The Crown Plaza made a convenient location for the Meet. The parking lot was large enough to hold trailers and tow equipment as well as the 27 American Austins and Bantams. All models were well represented. Coupes, Roadsters, Pick-Up Trucks, even the scarce Rivera body style were present. The best of show award is named after the founder of the company, Roy Evans. This year's recipient was Marty Brackin from Illinois for his flawless black 1940 Bantam Roadster. The AABC has one tour at the Annual Meet each year. Due to the diminutive size of the cars they don t travel well above 35 to 40 mph. While this is adequate for modern traffic many members are uncomfortable driving on public roads. The tour is usually 10 to 18 miles in total length. This year we toured to Blue Marsh Lake only a few miles from the hotel. The General Business Meeting is held each year at the Annual Meet. An important change to the By Laws was enacted this year. Members can now choose to receive their newsletter electronically. Those wishing to continue receiving a printed copy can do so. The 2018 Annual Meet will be hosted by Rick and Liz Horne, Gary and Carol Moyses and Fred and Mary Zampa at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA. We hope everyone will come visit the little cars next year. 6 ANTIQUE AUTO CLUB OF AMERICA WEST GEORGIA REGION MINUTES & TREASURER S REPORT MINUTES FROM JULY 6, 2017 I. Meeting called to order at 6:58 pm by President Glenn Novak. Glenn extended July birthday wishes to Sherry Beggs, Janet Heilman, Amy Duell, Cameron Covert and Evan Block. II. Minutes from the June 1, 2017 meeting were approved by voice vote. III. Treasurer Gary Moyses reported a balance of $ in our treasury. He passed around a complete report of revenues and expenses related to our car show. IV. Old Business a. Glenn thanked club members for making our car show a success with 102 vehicles registered this year, a record for us. b. Things that went well i. Dry weather ii. Big turnout including locals and folks from Alabama iii. Excellent teamwork iv. Jerry Rogers did a fine job entertaining v. Bill s ride for the kids was popular vi. We had four tents in use this year for shade vii. Plaques for youngest, oldest, farthest driven was good idea Things that went wrong or could use improvement Two vendors did not show up. Future vendors must pre-pay. Few motorcycles, but we will keep this class for next year and try again. No car models at all but we will try again next year and contact Boy Scouts. Gumball guessing game was not a success, will discontinue. Hard to hear the PA. Awards started late due to so many cars to judge, we must start judging earlier. No cars from 1977 but we will keep the plaques for next year and award Zack was not able to present his two trophies as he was closing a car deal Future car shows and some ideas for change Glenn handed out some lists for members to consider for August meeting. We may want to consider a change to a cooler month. There was considerable discussion on this topic but no consensus. No motion was made to change. New Business The Cottage Landing car show has been changed from June to Sept. 13. Our next meeting will be on August 3rd. Meeting was adjourned at 8:21 pm.
