1 VOLUME 15, ISSUE 3 MARCH 2013 THE CORSAIR President s Message Greetings, Display General Aircraft models of all types & sizes are still needed just for the day this Friday 3/8/2013 for the CAF "The Strategic Bombing Campaign in Europe: " seminar of the 17th Annual Greater Southwest Aviation Maintenance Technician Symposium at the Williams Campus of CHAN- DLER-GILBERT COMMUNITY COLLEGE Bridget Hall from 10am to 2pm. Please bring your display models to the meeting or bring them to the CHANDLER-GILBERT COM- MUNITY COLLEGE Bridget Hall and get into the seminar for free. Chuck Ludwig and volunteers will be there promoting our upcoming Scale Model Clinic 2 and IPMS-PHX CH, IPMS and our hobby in general by passing out flyers. Also happening this Thursday 3/7 is the Conley Aviation Club Make N Take so see Bill Dunkle to sign up to help. Let s not disappoint these budding aviation enthusiasts and show support for your hobby! The SDMB/IPMS-PHX CH mixer road trip was a success! All those that made the trip were treated to a couple great demos from Dave Brown and Clara Triem. Some lent a hand with both Make N Takes, others worked on kits or wandered the expansive Pima museum marveling at all the new displays. Thanks to Dave Brown, Chuck Wacker & Clara Triem for their hospitality and a great time sharing our hobby. PIMA MUSEUM MAKE AND TAKE This past Saturday several club members traveled south to assist the Sonoran Club at the Pima Museum to put on a Make and Take. I believe our participants totaled ten. There were two different events. One started at 10 am and included older kids. The idea was for these kids to take their model, assemble it, and to paint it with spray cans. The subject was a Monogram 1/48th Hawker Hurricane. Before starting they went to Hanger 3 to see the real thing up close. The only problem was it took longer than expected so they weren t finished at the 3pm quitting time. The other group were the younger kids, along with mom and dad. The starting time was 1pm. They all built the F-117 snap tite kit. Mom, dad and club members helped to get the kits assembled. Most of the kids went home with a fully assembled model. The participants in both events numbered at approximately 40, including parents. While this was going on, Dave Brown and Claire Triem put on a demo on salt painting and strut wires. Thanks to Bill Dunkle and all the volunteers that showed up at the Southwest Military Transport show s Make N Take to help introduce our hobby to over 40 boys, girls and their parents. This month Club meeting contest is: Simpletons: Kits with 50 parts or less (excludes figures). You must bring the instructions to qualify! Bring your CGCC display models and be ready to volunteer in some form or fashion to keep our hobby alive.. 4 THE CORSAIR PAGE 4 MARCH 2013 " If you're looking to increase the quality of your stash, six of the items on the table are either fairly new releases or have never been opened. So, "Slip out the back, Jack," and invest (not buy) in tickets for the following: Item A; Roden 1/144 Globemaster C-124C, Item B; Academy 1/72 Super-Entenard Libya 2011, Item C; Azur 1/72 Supermarine Sea Otter in postwar service, Item D; "You don't need to be coy, Roy, just get yourself free" with a Revell 1/48 Phantom F4J. Item E; Roden 1/48 North American T-28 Trojan special ops., Item F; we had to "Make a new plan, Stan," because the Hobby Boss 1/35 German-Land-Wasser-Schlepper was unknowingly partially built and so it's combined with a Cyber-Hobby ZSU-23-4M Russian military vehicle for a two for one offer, Item F; "Hop on the bus, Gus," literally the Roden 1/72 Opel Omnibus 3.6. "You don't need to discuss much" because Item H; is the same Central Pneumatic 3 gal. compressor which was regifted to the club by Ray Peterson, its winner in the Feb. raffle, from Salem, Oregon. IPMS Craig Hewitt appreciates donations from members who have "Just dropped off the keys [kits],lee, and made themselves free." 5 THE CORSAIR PAGE 5 MARCH 2013 Albatross DIII/V Decal Review : Albatros D.III/V Part 2 Scale: 1/48 Reviewer: Floyd S. Werner, Jr. IPMS # Product/Stock #: MSRP: Approx. $17.00 Review Type: Aircraft Product Type: Decal Company Info: Lifelike Decals. Company Website URL: Provided by Title: Lifelike Decals Provided by URL: Another great sheet for the Eduard Albatros kit. This one will be a pleasure to many WWI modelers. WWI aircraft have always been colorful but finding good quality decals has been a pain in the past. Lifelike has helped fix that with their latest two sheets. The instructions are printed on two single sided A4 sheets in full color. The one thing I like is that Lifelike isn t afraid to offer an educated guess when some marking is in question. They let you know what is speculative and how they came to their conclusions. Very professional and non-pompous way to do business. This particular release, like Albatros Part 1, has a sheet of the major propeller types used on German fighters in WWI. This is very valuable asset and shows the difference to the props and the manufacturers. The decals are designed specifically to fit the Eduard kit and its shape. There are three sheets of decals. One larger sheet with light blue, white, grey and black markings. The biggest thrill on this sheet are the Bavarian checkers. This sheet is printed by Microscale so just use their products and you should have no problems whatsoever. The second sheet is printed in Japan and is slightly smaller with the other colors and personal markings. There is a third sheet which is a correction sheet for the flag on the one aircraft. This shows the level of dedication that Lifelike puts into the decals they put out. The first aircraft is a D.Va which features wood grain front fuselage and the whole aft section sports the white and blue checkers of the Bavarian flag. The wings are the grey-green and purple with light blue undersides. A coat of arms of Wurzburg is on both sides of the fuselage. The Albatros D.V of Lt. d.r Josef Veltjens of Jasta 18 is plainly colorful. Its fuselage is blue from forward of the cockpit to the tail. The nose area is red and the lower portion is light blue. The upper wings are typical green-grey and purple with light blue lower surfaces. A very stylized arrow is displayed on both sides of the fuselage. Black and red are always good looking on an aircraft. The fuselage is mostly black with a red engine cowling area. The side has painted German flags on both sides. There is an errata sheet included with the decals as the flags were not opaque enough. Again this shows the level of professionalism that Lifelike exhibits in all their releases. The wings are the standard grey-green and purple with light blue undersides. The final aircraft is a D.III of Werner Voss. The fuselage is mostly wood grain finish with a white tail and hearts around the fuselage and a green wreath. The upper wing has light brown and grey-green camouflage pattern and light. It is a very nice looking aircraft of a historically significant pilot. Colorful, quality decals and full color instructions. There is not a whole lot more you can do to make these decals any better. Highly recommended Thanks to Lifelike for the review copy. You can get your copy directly from them at Let them know you heard about it here. Continued next Page

7 THE CORSAIR PAGE 7 MARCH 2013 REVIEW Title: Pz.Kpfw.III.Ausf.L late production Scale: 1/72 Reviewer: Jim Pearsall IPMS # 2209 Product/Stock #: 7385 MSRP: $20.00 Review Type: Build Product Type: Plastic AFV kit with photoetch Company Info: Company Website Title: (use if product manufacturer and provider are different) Company Website URL: ( ) The Panzer The Panzer III was built by Daimler-Benz, and the A models were first produced in The first mass production version was the Ausf F, which entered service in 1939, just in time for Poland. The Panzer III was upgunned and armor added due to the experiences in Russia in 1941 and 42. The Ausf J, the model preceding the L was equipped with the 50mm KWK L39/60 gun, which could penetrate the T-34s front armor at ranges under 500 meters. The L had the same armament, but the armor was increased to 50mm, with 20mm plates on the front and rear. This made the L pretty safe from the T-34 at longer ranges, but the KV-1 could still put it in the hurt locker. Also, with lighter side armor, even anti-tank rifles could penetrate from closer ranges at the flanks. The Ausf M was often equipped with side skirts for the hull and turret. As the Panzer IV achieved decent production numbers, in 1943, the Panzer III was increasingly relieved of anti-armor duty and put into infantry support after the Battle of Kursk. By the end of the war, there was almost no front line use of the Panzer III, and many units had been returned to the factory to be converted into Sturmgeschutz IIIs. The Kit The sprues come nicely packaged in a plastic bag, with the accessories in a separate bag, with each item in its own bag which is taped to a slotted card. This is wonderful, as it allows you to see the decals, the PE, and the tracks separately, and they don t get lost waiting for their time in the assembly process. All of the plastic parts were cleanly molded, flash free, and with decent surface detail molded on. In 1/72 scale, it s hard to get the axe, the bolt cutter and the jack to look right if they re separate parts. Assembly The assembly instructions are a series of pictures with part numbers and arrows showing where those parts go. The first thing I did was paint all the parts Model Master Panzer Yellow, since that was the basic scheme I was going to do. Then I separated the bogies from the sprue and painted the black rubber tires. This took a while, with 24 tires, (6 to a side, inner and outer wheels) but it wasn t an odious task. After they dried, I glued the inner and outer wheels together, and attached them to the suspension. The one-piece hull and suspension is a great idea, as getting things lined up on a multiple part hull can be demanding. As it is, the drive sprockets, the bogies and the large idler wheel at the rear all lined up nicely for the tracks. Excellent design helps.i had some trouble aligning the side parts for the upper hull until I discovered that the turret ring assembly provides support and alignment for these parts.

8 THE CORSAIR PAGE 8 MARCH 2013 From my experience, it s a lot easier to put the tracks on before you mount the hull top and fenders. There s not much room between the return rollers and the fenders, and getting the track in there was a bit nip and tuck. At this point, however comes one of those makes you smile things. The kit provides photoetch parts for the intake screens on both sides of the hull. They really look great. I used Gator s Glue for the PE parts, and had no trouble with them. The rest of the assembly was pretty straightforward. I had a little trouble fitting the turret bustle, the turret hatch halves took some work with knife and file, and I spent 20 minutes looking for one of the headlights after the tweezers launched it, but everything else fit very well. Painting and Decals After mostly assembling the kit, which was already Panzergelb, I decided on the yellow/dark brown scheme from the 13 th Pz Division, south Russia I put some future in the areas where decals were going, and let it set overnight. The decals were great. They came off the backing paper cleanly, stayed together during the poking and prodding needed for alignment, and then stayed where I put them. I used a little Micro-Sol under each decal, and that seems to be the method that works. Finishing I sprayed on a coat of acrylic clear flat, then after that sat for a couple of hours, added the machine guns and tracks. As noted, there s almost not enough room for the tracks above the return idlers, but I used a pair of needle nose pliers to pull the tracks into position. I used a black wash on the wheels and the areas around the access hatches, to get them to stand out a little and to try to pop out the details.. And it was done. Overall evaluation Highly recommended. The kit has no real problems as far as fit, it s an interesting subject, the photoetch and decals are very good. This kit is listed as an Armor Pro kit. Any experienced modeler can turn out a presentable Panzer III in a short time. I enjoyed this project. Thanks to Dragon USA for the really nice kit, and to Steve and IPMS/USA for the chance to build it.

9 THE CORSAIR PAGE 9 MARCH 2013 Group Build News March 2013 In discussions with several builders, the use of the S.E Asia camo paint scheme has been chosen over NMF. As many as one third of our display could be adorned in that fashion. Also there has been a desire to hang external fuel tanks. If memory serves, several months ago it was discussed and that this issue was left to the builder. My input was that discretion be used as to whether the use of external tanks was normal or an unusual circumstance by our ANG units. My request for decal needs for Kevin (and now Jim too) got a small reply. If you need something unique to our ANG aircraft that's not in your kit's decals or your own stash, time has almost run out on getting these made before our makers will no longer be available. The March monthly meeting is probably your last chance to get your request in with enough time to get it done and back to you by June/July. And finally, Bill Holbrook, who has donated several high dollar kits to the group build, has dug deep into his stash and found a Stinson L-5. Now if only Minicraft would reverse its cancellation of a 1/144th AZANG KC-135E!!!! FEBRUARY MEETING MINUTES Summary of the February 5 meeting of the Craig Hewitt Chapter Phoenix IPMS from notes compiled by the acting secretary Chuck Ludwig. President Keith Peiper called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. New attendees and guests were introduced. One guest was Ray Peterson who was visiting from the Salem, Oregon IPMS chapter. Secretary Doug Solomon was absent so Chuck Ludwig acted as meeting recorder. In the Vice-president's report Ludwig described the current raffle items and stated a fun kit to build was the Hasegawa 1/72 P-40 kit. Member Rep. Sam Bueler had nothing to report. New treasurer Craig Pierce asked members to update their dues. Pieper announced the Southwest Military Transport show would be held Feb. 23 & 24 and asked for volunteers to conduct Make & Take It at this event. Regarding the modeling clinic to be held at the American Legion May 18, it was revealed the rent for the hall would be $100 and Keenan Chichester was printing the flyers. Ed Kucharski described the auction and activities regarding the Zeidman estate: the auction will be in April and open to club members at the home of Mrs. Zeidman in Phoenix. The Connelly Middle School in Chandler will be the site for a Make & Take It March 7 and volunteers are needed. If a member wants to participate, he should contact Bill Dunkel. Our club has accepted the invitation of the Tucson Sonoran Chapter to meet with them March 2 at the Pima Air Museum for a joint model activity, The winners of our local club contest, "Wet & Wild" for February were Craig Brown in the advanced category and Mike Hinderliter the novice group.
