COMMUNICATION LINK May 2012 ROME-CARROLLTON DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN News from the ROCA UMW Treasurer See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare Isaiah 42:9 (NRSV) Inside this Issue... News from the Treasurer Thank You ROCA UMW Old and New Response Magazine Annual Bkfst. Form CCME Registration Faith-Fun-Everyone Greetings from Barbara Social Action Project Annual Training Calendar Mailing/Contact Information Beverly Swafford 5375 Britton Drive Villa Rica, GA beverlyswafford@hotmail.com Help the District Budget and go GREEN. Receive the Communication Link via . Send your address to the above address. Hi Ladies! I have had several people to call me and ask, Is it too late to be a Rainbow Woman and/or a Minute Woman this year? Definitely not! All of you have until July 31, Your unit treasurer would have to get the information and money into my hands by that date of July 31. I encourage ALL of you to be one or both or to give to candleburning. As of May 10, 2012, the ROCA UMW has 9.8 minutes for this year. Ouch! Last year we had a record of 52 minutes and 48 seconds. We need many more minutes to beat the other districts in the burning of the ROCA district candle at the North Georgia Conference UMW Annual Meeting in Snellville on October 6. Now some of you might not know what a minute woman is or candleburning. Let me explain. Forty dollars ($40) supports a Minute of Mission. This can be done in three ways: 1) Minute Woman Candleburning: any INDIVIDUAL that personally gives one minute of gift of missions ($40) above their regular mission pledge is a Minute Woman. This giving can be a combination of in honor or in memory giving but must be done at one time. You will receive a minute woman certificate and pin at ROCA UMW Annual Meeting. The amount given will be added to ROCA UMW total mission giving minutes. 2) In Honor Candleburning: Give a gift of mission ($5 per minute) in honor of someone special. You will receive a candleburning card to give to the person honored. The amount given will be converted to minutes or seconds and added to the ROCA UMW total mission giving minutes. 3) In Memory Candleburning: Give a gift of missions ($5 per minute) in memory of someone special. You will receive a candleburning card to give to their family. The amount given will be converted to minutes or seconds and added to the ROCA UMW total mission giving minutes. In all three ways a candle will burn at the North Georgia Conference UMW Annual Meeting for the total time the ROCA UMW has given to all candleburning avenues. Now what is a Rainbow Woman? Rainbow Woman is a personal step above your pledge to mission giving. This is an individual gift to all the five channels of giving plus candleburning. The individual is the Rainbow Woman and as part of this giving, the Rainbow Woman honors someone with a special Mission Recognition Pin and also receives a Mission card of her choice and an In Memory card. You will receive a Rainbow Woman certificate and pin at the ROCA UWM Annual Meeting. The cost is a minimum of $65 which is above your regular mission pledge and has to be paid ALL at one time.

Broken down: Pledge to missions... $5.00 min Candleburning.. $5.00 min Purchase a Special Mission Recognition Pin $40.00 min Gift in Memory $5.00 min Gift in Mission (Card). $5.00 min World Thank Offering. $5.00 min So if you are interested in being a Minute Woman or Rainbow Woman turn the money into your unit treasurer in time where she can get it into my hands no later than July 31, *ALL UNIT TREASURERS don t forget second quarter remittance is due May 31, 2012.* Love and Blessings, Heidi D. Smith housing_hds@bellsouth.net ROCA Units Respond Positively to Request for Sewing Kits By Daisy Waldrep, Social Action Coordinator Thank You for Positive Response to Request for Sewing Kits Thank you! Thank you! Your ROCA mission team asked, and as always, our units responded positively and generously. Our ROCA Social Action/Mission Project for 2012 is UMCOR Sewing Kits. The first opportunity for collection was at the annual banquet in April, and the number of sewing kits collected there was impressive! We are so proud of our Rome- Carrollton UMW units and their response to the request to prepare sewing kits for UMCOR to use in helping women learn sewing skills. One hundred sixty-nine (169) sewing kits were contributed and these have been taken to Douglasville for later delivery to UMCOR s Sager-Brown depot. UMCOR estimates the value of a sewing kit as $ Based on information from our members, it seems that $20.00 is a more realistic estimate for us. This means that our donation of 169 sewing kits has a value of between $ and $ !!! And when including the cash donation of $169 (which if $1 per kit to help with shipping costs), the estimated value of our contribution is between $3211 and $3449. Quite a significant contribution Way to go UMW!!! Remember that we have two more opportunities this year to donate our UMCOR sewing kits our two fall meetings. September 8 is the second annual Faith, Fun, and Everyone Retreat at Aragon UMC, and October 28 is our ROCA UMW Annual Meeting at Moore s Chapel UMC. Plan now how you and/or your unit will prepare sewing kits, and begin to watch for sales on fabrics and other items. 2

See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare Isaiah 42:9 NRSV At the United Methodist Church General Conference in Tampa, Florida it was approved to allow United Methodist Women to separate from the General Board of Global Ministries. This will allow some new changes in how we operate as UMW. We will learn more about these changes as direction comes from our Division Headquarters in New York. Be watching the Conference newsletter, The Reflector, and our district Communication Link for more details and information on these changes. But even with changes some things will stay the same like the need for qualified women to serve on the District and Conference Teams. Pecolia Ann Hughes, our District Chair of Nominations and her Nominations Committee are still in need for women in our Rome-Carrollton District to fill several vacancies on the District Team for If you or another UMW you would recommend would like to serve on the District Mission Team please contact Pecolia Ann at Rome-Carrollton UMW Comes Through Again Heidi D. Smith our Rome-Carrollton District Treasurer has called to inform us that she has received $500 from our District Local Units for our contribution to the UMW Project for Annual Meeting in Athens. We still need a few more EMPTY school bags for this project. If your unit can provide school bags please call me or any district officer. We will be happy to make arrangements for their pick up and delivery to NGC Annual Meeting in Athens. Thank you again ROCA UMW for ALWAYS being willing to do your part for MISSIONS. 7 Greetings Fellow Rome-Carrollton UMW I m sure your days, weeks and months are passing as fast as everyone s. It seems only a short while ago we were talking about our goals for a new year. Now your district mission team is making plans for a September Mini Retreat, North Georgia Conference and Rome Carrollton District UMW Annual Meetings in October. Schools are out; folks are going on vacation and before we blink time to turn in reservations for fall events. There are several opportunities for you to share some summer days with your fellow UMW. I hope you registered for the 10 th Southeastern Jurisdictional Quadrennial UMW Meeting in Birmingham June 1 st and 2 nd. If you did not perhaps we will see you at the UMW Breakfast, June 13 th at our NGC UMC Conference in Athens. There is still time to register online and don t forget to invite your pastor. If we miss you in Athens you will have another opportunity to be among your UMW sisters at Cooperative Christian Mission Education, July th at Simpsonwood. To begin our fall activities Carol Winkle is planning another wonderful Mini Retreat on Saturday, September 8 th at Aragon UMC. You can find registration forms for the retreat and other upcoming UMW events in this newsletter. If you missed our annual banquet you missed a blessing. We had 209 registered for our banquet this year. The UMW of Douglasville First created beautiful live floral centerpieces for the tables. Thanks to loans from Anna Kresge Memorial, Aragon and Cedartown First churches we had real linen table cloths once again. Ann Lowe, Aragon UMC pianist provided music throughout the evening. The Rev. Blair Zant of Roswell UMC and Sardis UMC not only brought us an inspiring message but also treated us in song with her fantastic voice. We were honored to have in attendance several local Pastors, our Conference UMW President and Vice President, and our District Superintendent. Suzanne Byrd, District Vice President and chair of programs, is to be commended for another memory making banquet. On April 21 st seventeen UMW from Anna Kresge Memorial, Aragon, Bethel-Gore, Golden Memorial, Hiram and Rome First gathered together for our first District UMW Work Day Experience at Murphy Harpst Children s Center in Cedartown. These women cleaned and painted and became better educated about the mission of Murphy Harpst. Thank you ladies for your service! Watch for details in this Communication Link for Work Day In a recent conversation with a local UMW President she said, The women of my church do not want to attend those conference and district events, they just want to do things in our church and community. Sadly, this is not the first time I have heard this statement. If you or your unit does not make a Gift to Mission you are not fulfilling your role as UMW. Let s not forget however that UMW is not just about making a Pledge to Mission or even doing Good Works in our communities. It is not our PURPOSE to function independently as a unit. We are part of the world s largest women s denominational organization over 140 years in existence and CONNECTED to one another as UNITED Methodist Women just as our United Methodist Church is a connectional ministry. We participate in conference and district events so that we can GROW INTO WHOLE PERSONS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. We grow as United Methodist Women when we meet together and share ideas and learn from the programs provided for our benefit. Many UMW put in long hours to assure the meetings are not only fun but informative and spirit lifting. I encourage you to become a WHOLE PERSON through UMW. A portion of each Unit s Pledge to Mission should be set aside for Administration and Membership and Development (A&MD) so that UMW from each unit can attend district and conference events. I pray we see more of you making plans to attend not just our annual banquet but our other UMW events as well. Please know I am available to discuss any of your unit s concerns or to help in any way; as is the entire Mission Team. We are here to serve your Unit, call on us. Yours in Christ, Barbara Waldrop ROCA President 7

ROCA Social Action/Mission Project for 2012 Continues The Social Action/mission project for 2012 for ROCA District UMW units is Sewing Kits for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Sewing kits foster independence in women as a woman can make clothing in her own size and in the style of her culture. Cottage industries often grow out of sewing classes where women use these kits to practice valuable income generating skills. UMCOR kits have very precise specifications for preparation and assembly which are given below. Individuals could assemble one or more kits; several members could go in together sharing expenses; and units or circles could assemble a number of sewing kits. At the UMW banquet in April, one hundred sixty-nine (169) sewing kits were collected -- a significant contribution! Prepared sewing kits will be collected again at our two fall district wide meetings the second annual Faith, Fun, Everyone Retreat on September 8 at Aragon UMC and the District Annual Meeting on October 28 at Moore's Chapel UMC. It is hoped that each UMW unit will participate in this combined ROCA social action/mission effort to help women become more independent. Together we can make a difference! Sewing Kit Items Value $18 per kit 3 continuous yards of fabric cotton or cotton blend only no heavy duty corduroy, knit, etc. please no patriotic, religious, holiday, camouflage, or military patterned fabric please 1 pair scissors fabric scissors only 1 package needles hand needles in original packaging only 1 spool thread medium to large spool, no travel kit thread please 5 8 buttons no loose buttons leave buttons in original packaging or fasten all together 1 plastic bag one gallon size sealable bags only Assembling Directions Wrap sewing notions in fabric. Place kit in the plastic bag and seal. Important Notes All items must be new. Do not wash the fabric as it will then be considered used. All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items nothing more. DO NOT include any personal notes, money or additional material in the kits. These things must be painstakingly removed and will delay the shipment. Processing & Shipping Costs: UMCOR requests at least $1.00 for each prepared kit. This donation enables kits to be sent to areas in need. Please have a labeled envelope containing at least $1 for each kit you prepare and give this to the person collecting the kits at each fall meeting. Please bring your completed sewing kits to the Fun, Faith, Everyone Retreat on September 8 at Aragon UMC and/or to the ROCA UMW Annual Meeting on October 28 at Moore's Chapel UMC. For more information on UMCOR, visit the website at UMCOR.org Click on 'Relief Supplies' at the top of that page and then select 'Sewing Kits' from the list of kits on the right. For questions or additional information about this project, contact Daisy Waldrep at (home), (cell), or dgwaldrep@aol.com 8

ATTENTION UNIT PRESIDENTS No, not more forms! Yes, I am afraid so! It is nearly time for our reportable year to end. You will remember we report things like Reading Program, Mission Today Units, Goals of Excellence and Deceased Members from July 1 to June 30 th each year. All Presidents will be receiving their forms in the mail shortly so please be watching for them. In the meantime start collecting your information for these forms which will be due back to the district in August. DISTRICT TRAINING NOVEMBER-JANUARY-NOVEMBER-JANUARY Wow, have we had the discussions on WHEN to have our District Annual Training. At our last Executive Meeting some members felt strongly it should be in November when our Conference has there s and before the New Year begins. Others felt it should be in January when we historically have had better attendance. The decision was made for the present to go back to January. So mark your calendars for your Rome-Carrollton UMW Training and Officer Update to be on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Second Avenue UMC in Rome. Please watch our Communication Link for updates.
