1 EINE (JZGE) DI5 DI9HP0 DTC P300/4 Igniter Circuit Malfunction CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION A DIS (Direct Ignition System) has been adopted. The DIS improves the ignition timing accuracy, reduces highvoltage loss, and enhances the the overall reliability of the ignition system by eliminating the distributor. The DIS is a cylinder ignition system which ignites one cylinder with one ignition coil. In the cylinder ignition system, the one spark plug is connected to the end of the secondary winding. High voltage generated in the secondary winding is applied directly to the spark plug. The spark of the spark plug pass from the center elecrtode to the ground electrode. The engine ECU determines ignition timing and outputs the ignition signals (IGT) for each cylinder. Based on IGT signals, the power transistors in the igniter cuts off the current to the primary coil in the ignition coil is supplied to the spark plug that are connected to the end of the secondary coil. At the same time, the igniter also sends an ignition confirmation signal (IGF) as a failsafe measure to the engine ECU. 3 INSPECTION PROCEDURE EINE (JZGE) DI HINT: Read freeze frame data using hand held tester. Because freeze frame records the engine conditions when the malfunction is detected, when troubleshooting it is useful for determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, the engine warmed up or not, the fuel airratio lean or rich, etc. at the time of the malfunction. Check spark plug and spark (See page ). IG Go to step 4. Check for open and short in harness and connector in IGF signal circuit between engine ECU and ignition coil with igniter (See page 34). IN Repair or replace harness or connector. 3 Disconnect ignition coil with igniter connector and check voltage between terminals IGF of engine ECU connector and body ground. ON IGF (+) D59 (a) Disconnect the igniter connector. (b) Remove the enigne room engine ECU hood and cover. (c) Turn the ignition switch ON. Measure voltage between terminals IGF of the engine ECU connector and body ground. : Voltage: V Replace igniter. Check and r epl ace engi ne ECU ( See page IN34).
4 DI 8 EINE (JZGE) 4 Check for open and short in harness and connector in 3 IGTsignal circuit between engine ECU and ignition coil with igniter (See page 34). IN Repair or replace harness or connector. 5 Check voltage between terminals IGT 3 of engine ECU connector and body ground. START IGT3 (+) IGT (+) IGT (+) Remove the engine room engine ECU hood and cover. Measure voltage between terminals IGT 3 of the engine ECU connector and body ground when engine is cranked. : Voltage: More than 0. V and less than 4.5 V D59 IGT GND IGF GND IGT signal waveform V/ Division Reference: INSPECTION USI OSCILLOSCOPE During cranking or idling, check waveform between terminals IGT 3 and E of the engine ECU connector. HINT: Correct waveform appears as sohwn, with rectangle waves. 0 m sec./division A354 Check and replace engine ECU (See page IN34).

START IGT3 (+) IGT (+) IGT (+) (a) Remove the engine room engine ECU hood and cover.. (b) Disconnect the igniter connector. Measure voltage between terminals IGT 3 of the engine ECU connector and body ground when engine is cranked. : Voltage: More than 0. V and less than 4.5 V D59 Check and replace engine ECU (See page IN34). Check voltage between terminal of igniter connector and body ground. BE6653 P439 ON START (+) A004 Disconnect the igniter connector. Measure voltage between terminal of igniter connector and body gr ound, when ignit ion swit ch is t ur ned t o O N and START position. : Voltage: 94 V Repair igniter power source circuit. 8 Check for open and short in harness and connector between ignition switch and igniter (See page IN34). Repair or replace harness or connector.
