NEVER operate the machine with it in the raised position, always turn the Engine switch to the OFF position. It is possible that petrol can leak through the Filler cap if the tank is more than half fall when the machine is in the raised Position. Care should be taken not to spill fuel on greens or cause to ignite. (4)NEVER OPERATE THE MACHINE WITH ANY PARTS MISSING! Check the machine regularly for loose or damaged parts. 4 HOW TO GET THE BEST FROM YOUR GROUNDSMAN Introduction The increasing awareness of the importance of properly aerated greens has increased the demand for high performance equipment. It is for this reason that Groundsman Industries have undertaken four years of intensive research and development to produce a range of 'Fine Turf aerators which excel in every department. It is important that every new owner should learn how to get the best results from their Groundsman. MODEL 460 SDR This top of the range pedestrian operated machine is designed primarily for rolling terrain such as golf greens. The 460SDR model is rear wheel driven with spring ballasted independent suspension to assist traction and maintain a constant hole pattern. It hugs the Greens contours giving a consistent depth of penetration. Rear side brakes and front casters make the 460SDR very manoeuvrable, it is capable of aerating in tight circles without ripping the turf surface. It has four crank arms and a working width of 60cm (24") selector drive (SD) and rapid transport (R.) Changing the tine holders To change the holders on the model 460SDR remove the rear guard and use the T wrench supplied in the tool kit. See Page 9 The engine must be SWITCHED OFF during this operation. NOTE Consult your GROUNDSMAN TINE & HOLDER CATALOGUE for detailed descriptions of available tines and holders plus their recommended uses. This catalogue is supplied with the machine or available from Groundsman Industries free of charge. Page 3
5 TROUBLE-SHOOTING Problem Engine won't start. Possible Solution Check ignition switch is on. Check fuel level. Check oil level (oil alert engines.) Clean and gap spark plug. Engine chugs and smokes. Turn choke off. Drain and refill with fresh fuel. Clean or replace air filter. No power, clutch slips under load. Pull the throttle lever all the way up. Adjust the throttle cable to increase engine speed (see engine manual.) Steering heavy (460SDR only.) Adjust brake-steer cables (page 8) Machine pulls to the right or left. Check tyre pressures (18 psi.) Machine vibrates and lacks traction. Depth adjustment set too deep (page 6.) 6 Basic Operating Instructions In and out of work positions Press foot down on tread bar Lift depth set bar, Then slowly release tread bar engage tines in work position Ground Contact To Take out of work, Press foot on tread bar until depth set bar engages with latch. To Adjust Tining Depth Ensure machine is in the raised out of work position. Loosen clamp bolt A with a 19mm spanner. Slide in the direction shown to achieve required depth. Note The depth slide may be capable of being set beyond maximum depth. For greater stability and traction Do Not set the depth slide deeper than the machine is capable of going in the given conditions The rear wheels should always remain firmly on the ground helping support the machine Operators Handle Adjustment 1 Loosen lever A ( Anti clockwise) 2 Adjust handle to desired height. 3 Tighten up lever A. 7 460 SDR SAFTY GUARD REMOVAL (1) Remove guard A ( using 17mm spanner) Access to top drive chain and V belts (2) Remove guard B ( 13mm spanner) to access ground drive chain and belt (3) Remove guard C to access battery BATTERY REPLACEMENT SDR (1) Loosen off lock nut A and turn bolt B to release clamp plate (2) Remove Clamp Plate. 8 STEERING CABLE FITTING INSTRUCTIONS Removal (1) Remove cable/s from adjuster plate A (2) Remove cable/s from wheel bracket B and unhook from brake band linkage C (3) Withdraw steering handle from box D (4) Unhook cable/s from steering handle flange Refitting (1) Insert adjuster end E of cables into steering handle box D (2) Attach bulbs onto steering handle flange (3) Attach cable bulb into band linkage C (4) Insert cable sheath into wheel bracket B (5) Apply tension to cable and insert adjuster plate A between washers and nuts on adjuster E Please note, main adjuster plate A and cable nuts E should be adjusted all the way back to assist this operation CABLE ADJUSTMENT Main adjustment is done by positioning adjuster plate A" via M10 lock nuts ( forward to tighten ) Right and Left balance is set by cable adjuster E ( turn nuts back to tighten ) Adjust cables to give 50 to 60mm movement right and left (100 to 120 mm ) Please Note Machine should be free to pull backwards when both gear levers are in the central position. NEVER try to pull the machine backwards by the steering handle as this locks the wheels and if excessive force is used, steering cables will be damaged or broken TENTION GROUND DRIVE CHAIN (1) Remove hub cap A (2) Using box spanner from took kit loosen off axle bolt (3) Tighten tension nut B to correct chain tension. (4) Tighten axle nut (5) Pack hub with grease and replace cap Page 7
9 MAIN DRIVE V-BELT ADJUSTMENT 460SR G D E A B 1 Remove safety guard. (ref. Safety guard removal) 2 Loosen engine nuts A 3 Loosen lock nut on adjusting screw B, tighten adjusting crew to correct belt tension 10mm (ensure alignment of pulleys) 4 Tighten lock nut 5 Tighten engine nuts A 6 Replace safety guard Grease dog clutch via grease nipple F approximately every 100 hours. (accessible with safety guard in place MAIN DRIVE CHAIN ADJUSTMENT 460SDR F H 1 Follow procedures 1&2 above 2 Loosen nuts D 3 Loosen off adjusting screw B to release belt tension. 4 Loosen nut G to release tension on RT and H 5 Loosen lock nut on adjusting screw E and tighten to correct chain tension (i.e. F = 10mm) ensure alignment of pulley shaft, tighten lock nut. 6 Tighten lock nuts D 7 Slide tensioner nut G to take up slack in RT chain H, tighten nut G. 8 Follow procedures 3 6 above (main drive V-belt adjustment) MAIN V-DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT 460SDR 1 Remove safety guard A (see 460SDR guard removal) 2 Loosen nuts A and D 3 Loosen lock nuts and adjusting screws B,E & G 4 Slide engine and pulley shaft close together and remove belts 5 Replace with Groundsman main drive belts 6 Re-adjust belts and chains as per above instructions 7 Replace safety guard. 10 Changing The Tines & Holders Tines & Holders. Groundsman provide clamp type tine holders in twin, triple, quad, and Quint. Tines are available in a variety of sizes and in order to accommodate these the tine holders can be supplied in a range of socket sizes as follows; Twin ½" 5/8" ¾" 7/8" Triple ½" 5/8" ¾" Quad ½" 5/8" Quint ½" * See Groundsman's Tine & Holder catalogue for illustrations and descriptions Fitting the tines to clamp style holders. Ensure that the tine clamp bolt is loose. Place the holder on a solid surface or in a vice, insert the tine into the socket and using a hammer make sure they are in all the way in to the stop. Tighten the tine clamp bolt firmly with the wrench provided in the tool kit. Cluster tines Cluster tines are available in six, eight and twelve. These are fitted to the spigot mounting flange by two fixing nuts and tightened using the wrench provided in the tool kit. When the cluster tines wear out they are unbolted from the mounting flange discarded and replaced with new once. Fitting the tine holders to the machine All tine holders are attached to the tining arms by a quick change spigot clamp mounting. The spigot is located at the top of the tine holder and a vee which locates in the spigot clamp body ensures that orientation is always correct. Loosen the spigot clamp bolts with the wrench provided in the tool kit and pull back the spigot clamp cap. Ensuring that the vee portion of the tine holder spigot is facing forward towards the clamp body, insert the holder and tighten the spigot clamp bolts. Removing the tine holders from the machine Slacken the spigot clamp bolts just enough to release the tine holder spigot and remove. Page 9
