1 MERCMONITOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT: This document guides our delers, botbuilders, nd compny service personnel in the proper instlltion or service of our products. If you hve not been trined in the recommended servicing or instlltion procedures for these or similr Mercury Mrine products, hve the work performed by n uthorized Mercury Mrine deler technicin. Improper instlltion or servicing of the Mercury product could result in dmge to the product or personl injury to those instlling or operting the product. NOTE: After completing instlltion, plce these instructions with the product for the owner's future use. Notice This Product Requires Electronic Clibrtion Before Use. Instlltion of this product will require electronic clibrtion. This clibrtion must not be ttempted by nyone other thn the Originl Equipment Mnufcturer (OEM) or Mercury technicin trined in digitl throttle nd shift systems (DTS) t n uthorized Mercury delership. 2 MercMonitor Gtewy Models Description There re four MercMonitor gtewy models vilble; Bse model with nine gtewy fetures, RPM SmrtTow model with 20 gtewy fetures, SmrtTow Pro model with 25 gtewy fetures (includes GPS puck), nd Gtewy Premier model with 25 gtewy fetures. Ech model incorportes the use of NMEA2K 1. nd J1939 softwre interfce tht llows or controls ccess to other progrms. Ech engine must hve its own gtewy monitor when using the bse or RPM Smrt Tow models. Gtewy Premier nd SmrtTow Pro models cn communicte nd provide NMEA2K/J11939 with four engines or less. Gtewy Premier nd SmrtTow Pro models screen will only disply single engine dt. Premier does not include SmrtTow Pro control cpbilities. The softwre is cpble of trnsmitting (TX) informtion to, nd receiving (RX) informtion from vrious prmeter group number (PGN) products. Pge 4 / AUGUST 2009

5 Trnsmit (TX) Gtewy Modes Trnsmits engine dt to NMEA2K/J1939 comptible disply devices. Bse nd RPM Smrt Tow models require one MercMonitor per engine. Gtewy Premier nd Smrt Tow Pro models require only one MercMonitor per vessel to trnsmit multi engine dt to multi function displys (MFD) through the NMEA2K/J1939 protocol. The MercMonitor will disply one engine only regrdless of the model (Bse, RPM Smrt Tow, Smrt Tow Pro, Gtewy Premier). Receive (RX) Receives dt from NMEA2K/J1939 comptible engines. When cutting the dshbord for guge instlltion, follow these cutting tips: Fiberglss Apply msking tpe to re to be cut to prevent dshbord from crcking. Vinyl covered Remove vinyl from re to be cut with rzor blde to keep vinyl from tering. Guge Instlltion 1. Disconnect both bttery cbles from the bttery. Pge 6 / AUGUST 2009

7 ! WARNING Performing service or mintennce without first disconnecting the bttery cn cuse product dmge, personl injury, or deth due to fire, explosion, electricl shock, or unexpected engine strting. Alwys disconnect the bttery cbles from the bttery before mintining, servicing, instlling, or removing engine or drive components. 2. Select loction for the monitor guge tht hs unobstructed visibility.! CAUTION Avoid injury or product dmge. Obstructions, such s brces nd wiring, my be unseen when looking t the front of the dshbord. Before drilling or cutting ny holes in the dshbord, check the re behind the dshbord for obstructions. Do not drill or cut when obstructions re present. 3. Use 86 mm (3.375 in.) dimeter hole sw to cut out the opening for the monitor guge. 3-3/8 in. (86 mm) 4. Instll the sel onto the monitor guge. 5. Instll the monitor guge with the sel into the dshbord opening nd secure with the retiner nut. Tighten the nut securely MercMonitor Wire Hrness Connections The MercMonitor cn be instlled on vessels integrting SmrtCrft technology with other mnufcture products tht use NMEA2K/J1939 bckbone network. It cn lso be instlled nd integrted into vessel tht is not SmrtCrft comptible using the NMEA2K/J1939 bckbone. Ech scenrio requires specific hrness connections for the integrtion of power for the monitor nd the NMEA2K/J1939 bckbone network. MercMonitor Wire Hrness Connections SmrtCrft Network 1. Connect the NMEA power hrness red nd blck wires to bttery power terminl buss. IMPORTANT: The NMEA power hrness dpter should be utilized when integrting the MercMonitor with NMEA2K/ J1939 communiction tht does not hve n existing NMEA2K bckbone instlled. 5. Secure the NMEA 3A fuse holder with screw or retiner. Ensure the fuse holder is ccessible. IMPORTANT: The NMEA 3A fuse must be utilized when integrting the MercMonitor with NMEA2K/J1939 communiction tht does not hve n existing NMEA2K bckbone instlled. 6. Connect the wire hrness blck wire to vessel ground. b Min Menu AL Fvorites! Alrms - Junction box b - Wire hrness c - Bttery power terminl buss d - NMEA power hrness dpter e - NMEA 3A fuse holder f - To vessel ground c d e f Connect the NMEA 0183 device (if pplicble) to the wire hrness blue/white nd white/blue wires. Connect the NMEA2K tee connector to the wire hrness NMEA2K hrness connector. 10. Instll the k ohm termintion resistor onto the tee connector. 11. For Smrt Tow Pro MercMonitor, connect the GPS puck to the tee connector. NOTE: Any NMEA2K device (chrt plotter, rdr, gps) cn be connected to the tee connector. b d c Min Menu AL Fvorites! 10 IMPORTANT: When more thn one NMEA2K device is interfced with NMEA2K bckbone, k ohm termintion resistor must be instlled t ech end of the NMEA bckbone. b c d - k ohm resistor (2) b - Rdr c - Chrt plotter d - GPS e - To NMEA2K hrness connector e MercMonitor Wire Hrness Connections Non SmrtCrft Network The use of the MercMonitor on non SmrtCrft network pplictions require the MercMonitor gtewy set to "Receive." Filure to set the gtewy to "Receive" will cuse numerous fults to pper tht cnnot be resolved. Chnging the gtewy to "Receive" will cler the fults. The menu pth to set the gtewy to "Receive" is: "Min Menu," > "Settings," > "Gtewy," > "Gtewy." 1. Connect the wire hrness to the MercMonitor. 2. Connect the NMEA power hrness dpter to the wire hrness connecter. IMPORTANT: The NMEA power hrness dpter should be utilized when integrting the MercMonitor with NMEA2K/ J1939 communiction tht does not hve n existing NMEA2K bckbone instlled. 3. Connect the SmrtCrft power hrness dpter to the wire hrness junction box connector. IMPORTANT: The SmrtCrft power hrness dpter must be used to provide bttery voltge nd key switch operted power to turn the MercMonitor on. 4. Secure the NMEA 3A fuse holder with screw or retiner. Ensure the fuse holder is ccessible. IMPORTANT: The NMEA 3A fuse must be utilized when integrting the MercMonitor with NMEA2K/J1939 communiction tht does not hve n existing NMEA2K bckbone instlled. 5. Connect the SmrtCrft power hrness dpter purple wire to key switch "ON" power source. 6. Connect the SmrtCrft power hrness dpter red nd blck wire, nd the NMEA power hrness dpter red nd blck wire to bttery voltge source. 7.
