3 GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS The flow rate of the fluid flowing throughout the gauge (Flow-Meter) is given by the rotation of the inner piston. A magnetic REED-type sensor converts the movements of the piston into an impulsive signal that is transferred through a standard 3 meters long cable to a collector, which can be put at a maximum distance of 60 meters (indicator, totalizer, pre-set batch, PLC, ). In case of a longer distance between the Flow-Meter and the collector, the impulsive signal has to be converted into an analogic signal 4-20 ma by means of a signal converter. ACM is a bi-directional Flow-Meter and its components are: A measuring chamber containing the oscillating piston; Viton (or PTFE) made watertight O-rings; A Ryton (or PVDF) piston with two permanent magnets; A REED-type switch assembled in a suitable case and placed outside the gauge; The ACM components that are in contact with the fluid to be measured can either be AISI 304 made (or AISI 316, upon specific request) or also PVC made (consistently with the processing fluid of course). This easy-conceived construction (there is only one moving part) not only grants a long duration of the equipment, but also a very low maintenance cost. These counters are perfectly suitable for any and all industrial applications requiring the measurement of medium/low viscosity fluids/liquids. The piston is rotating towards the lowest point and the liquid is both inside and outside it. The liquid is now going outside the outlet port and it is forcing the piston towards its highest point. The piston is reaching its highest point and new liquid is coming inside the flow meter. INSTALLATION Prepare a straight pipe section having the same diameter (DM) of the Flow-Meter and whose length is at least 10 DMs upstream and 5 DMs downstream; In order to carry out the maintenance operations without interrupting the production activities, it is strongly suggested the installation of a by-pass circuit; It is better to install the Flow-Meter in a vertical section of the pipe. Otherwise, in case of installation of the gauge in/on a horizontal pipe section, it has to be noticed that, when the capacity is zero, the gravity tries to pull the piston toward the lower side of the chamber. Such an undesirable movement of the piston may cause a further impulse, thus causing little measuring errors; Fill the gauge with fluid before utilization, so to avoid the passing of air through the Flow-Meter (the presence of air is cause of both measuring errors and lower duration of the equipment); In case of air inside the Flow-Meter is found, a vacuum device must be installed downstream the main gauge; Make sure that a filter (having at least 40 mesh 420 microns of filtering capacity) is mounted upstream the Flow-Meter: The suggested kind of filter is the Y-type and it must be installed as close as possible to the gauge;

5 Make sure, in case of installation of the gauge in a new plant as well as after each maintenance operation (for example, after each and every welding), that the inside of the pipe is properly cleaned; In order to prevent damages to the REED-type switch, it is suggested to remove the latter before the installation of the Flow-Meter; Avoid, if possible, the installation of the Flow-Meter on pipelines that are subject to heavy vibrations or ram-strokes. In case of installation on such lines, then it is suggested to also mount some supporting brackets; The flow must be linear and continuous; in case of a pulsing flow it is deeply recommended to install a pulsation reducer; The interception valves, if mounted, have to be of the fast-locking-type (in order to minimize the effects of a delayed closure at the end of each batch); it is also generally recommended the use of pneumatic valves controlled by pilot electrovalves. In case of total absence of air and in case of the fluids to be measured have a viscosity lower than 750 cps, then the normal solenoid valves can be used. REED SWITCH ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS The flow meter is supplied with a 3 meters long connecting cable; in case of a distance longer than 60 meters between the flow meter and the collector, please use a shielded cable and a suitable shunt-box. Max number of cycles: from 3x10 7 to 5x10 7 (depending on the flow) Attraction speed: 2m/sec. Operational frequency: max. 250 cycles/sec. Protection level: IP 65 Contact: N.O. VA max: 10 A max: 0,2 V max: 30 CLEANING IN PLACE (C.I.P.) When the plant is Cleaning in place conceived (sterilization or washing) and the Flow-Meter cannot be removed from the pipe, it is suggested to install a by-pass (so to avoid that damages to the internal components may occur) or to follow the below listed indications: The temperature of the steam (or of the washing liquid) must no overcome the maximum temperature that is indicated in the technical features section (see page 1); Make sure that the washing liquid is consistent with the material the piston is made of;

6 In case of steam obtained sterilization, make sure, in order to avoid any breakage, that the flowing-strength does not exceed 75% of the effective capacity of the Flow-Meter, as indicated on its ID plate; It is recommended to start the flowing with the steam regulating valve completely closed and then to open it gradually, thus avoiding the creation of whirlpools or ram-strokes. TROUBLE SHOOTING In case of malfunction, please check the following: a) Functionality control of the digital totalizer, PLC, : Disconnect the pulse acquisition terminals and then simulate the contact by means of an intermittent short-circuit: the display should count any simulated pulse; If simulated pulse is not counted on the display, then the latter must be immediately repaired or replaced; In case the simulated pulse is received and counted on the display, reconnect the sensor wires to the Flow-Meter and then check the continuity of the cables. b) Functionality control of the REED switch:: Remove the REED switch from the Flow-Meter; Disconnect the sensor cable terminals; Connect an analogic tester to the terminals; Get a normal bi-polar magnet and make it slide on the flat section of the sensor; Each time that the magnet passes over the above mentioned flat section of the sensor, the tester should indicate such passing by making the resistance change from 0 to ; In case the REED switch is fully operational, then the inner piston has to be checked. c) To control that the piston is working regularly: Leave the REED sensor connected; Disconnect the two wires of the sensor from the terminal; Connect these two wires to the analogic tester so to verify the continuity (OHM); Open the fluid passing valve and verify that the tester pointer is oscillating; in case of there is no oscillation, check the piston; A visual check can also be done by observing the flow exiting from the control valve. If the flow rate is (much) lower than normal, then it is very likely that the piston is stalled and this may also cause a strong loss of capacity in the Flow-Meter.

7 Here are other possible causes of malfunction: 1) Breakage of the piston: the fluid still goes through the Flow-Meter but is not measured. Possible causes: The flowing-strength is higher than the one allowed/supported by the Flow-Meter; The piston has been repeatedly hit by violent and/or sudden ram-strokes; The material that the piston is made of is not consistent with the liquid to be measured; 2) Temporary stall of the piston that is caused by: Foreign particles that are present on the contact surface of the piston (f.e.: after edging iron filings; fur etc.); Piston dilatation caused by a long exposition of the gauge to an excessively high temperature (see the data on the ID plate) Excessive use of the screen; The flowing-strength is too low. In this case the piston cannot oscillate and therefore the counting becomes impossible. WARRANTY The ACM Flow-Meters are guaranteed for a period of 1 year from the date of shipping (unless a different agreement is reached during negotiations). The Warranty shall be valid and fit to cover any and all malfunctions that are caused by defects of fabrication as well as by the use of defective materials during the fabrication of the Flow-Meter to the extent of: ASCO Pompe S.r.l. receives detailed information about both the defect that has been discovered and the conditions of use of the Flow-Meter. At the same time it must also be clearly specified the model, the serial number (as reported on the ID plate) and the date of buying of the Flow-Meter; The defective product is given back to ASCO Pompe S.r.l. in order to carry out any and all necessary checks and controls. It is not included in the present Warranty any malfunction of the Flow-Meter that is directly caused by the End-User (such as: wrong installation; wrong and/or improper utilization etc.). The present Warranty is valid on an Ex Works bases (and the warehouse to be considered is the one located in Rozzano - MI) and its validity is always subject to the check and control of the allegedly defective Flow-Meter by ASCO Pompe S.r.l. authorized personnel. The validity of the present Warranty is limited to the ACM Flow-Meters only and it does not extend to any possible damage that the gauge it might have caused (always during the Warranty period) to the Customer plant and/or to the products manufactured by the Customer. PLEASE NOTE ASCO Pompe S.r.l. reserves the right to introduce any change to the present document without giving any forenotice.
