3 Overview The purpose of this document is to provide the installer with instructions on how to install the TM450 with OBDII. Adding TBT (CTO or MDT) and other accessories is now possible; refer to the appropriate installation guide for reference. Detailed documents about the installation of the TM450 transceiver and the CTO or MDT are available in the VSR WEBSITE. This document focuses on the installation and deployment of the TM450 with OBDII interface for gasoline engines, and Isuzu diesels. The installation of the system into the vehicle is the most important component of the system. The system has absolutely no chance of performing its intended service if the installation is performed poorly or wrong. It is very important to test the system and all its features at the end of the installation. Kit Components TM450 Combo WEDGE antenna (and Installation hardware kit) Main Power cable for TM450 Wiring harness 16 pin plug to wire the Inputs and Outputs OBDII interface box OBDII Y Cable Teletrac, Inc Page 1
4 System Connections Main differences when installing the NEW OBDII adaptor to the TM450 1) The new OBDII adaptor now has the output cable connected to the box itself. In the past we used a DB 9 cable to connect into the TM2. Now connecting into the TM450 is a direct connection. 2) The Gray DB15 extension cable is not required. The cable from the adaptor plugs directly into the DB15 cable. 3) Because the JBUS input is used, the DB9 cable can support an MDT or TBT while running 4) The TM2J cable will not be able to take power or ground from the OBDII. 5) Battery power, Ignition and Ground must be feed into the 3 pin connector discretely. 5 The OBDII TM450 kit now supports the CTO or MDT. Testing the Installation Verifying that the installation is fully operational is the single most important part of the installation. Testing the TM2J is accomplished by connecting a serial cable into the DB9. HyperTerminal or EngTerm must be set to Once all the connections are complete, start the engine and allow to run for 5 minutes, then type JPR SHO**. The standard JBUS will be displayed. Be sure to check the Miles Field (2 nd ) and verify that the mileage matches the odometer in the vehicle. Verify that the FUEL Field (3 rd ) has valid data. Setting up Mileage Readings There are 3 types of odometers that you are going to find. 1) Direct Odometer. Usually Found in new vehicle with DIGITAL Odometer. These will report the exact value displayed in the cluster. Simply confirm that the mileage appears in the JPR SHO** This is found in newer Fords, Sprinters, Nissan, most new trucks. 2) Indirect Odometer. The result from JPR SHO** will be off by a few hundred to a few thousand miles that the Odometer in the instrument Teletrac, Inc Page 3
6 cluster. This due to incorrect tire size, replaced Odometer or transmission. To make the contents of JPR SHO** match the Odometer, simply add or substract the difference of the two. If the Truck Odometer is higher than the JPR SHO** then do the following; A) Odometer is HIGHER than the JPR SHO** reading; Truck s odometer shows MILES in the dash. JPR SHO** shows in the second field of the string. Type ODO=5000** positive to ADD your calculated number. Then type JPR SHO** the second field will match the ODOMETER in the truck. B) Odometer is LOWER than the JPR SHO** reading; Truck s odometer shows MILES in the dash. JPR SHO** shows in the second field of the string. Type ODO=-5000** negative to subtract the number you are entering. Then type JPR SHO** the second field will match the ODOMETER in the truck. Found in, Chevy, older Fords, Toyota, Honda. 3) Setting the Odometer value; If the vehicle shows 0 miles but there is fuel data (3 rd field). This usually means that the type of vehicle you have reports its mileage in TRIP increments everytime the Ignition goes active. Then you must write the ODOMETER value into the Odometer register in the TM2J. TYPE ODO= (value is the ODOMETER value displayed in the instrument cluster). To check type ODO?** the returned value will be what you previously typed, once the vehicle is driven the mileage will be added automatically to the value that you entered. Found in Older GM and all Isuzu. Teletrac, Inc Page 4
7 Testing the System Once the ODOMETER is calibrated, change the reporting time to 5 minutes JPR=5**, this way you will send a JBUS/PBDII report in 5 minutes. Start the engine and perform a normal TM2J test (Ign ON/OFF, PTO, etc). Allow the engine to run for 10 minutes and turn OFF the engine and confirm the Performance Report has data. Confirm that Ignition and other messaging are functional. Then type JPR=60** to set the report back to normal. Run a report; the Performance Report will show Mileage and Fuel. If it does you have successfully completed the installation. OBDII Notes A JBUS setting of JHW=245 is required. The use of and external OBDII interface supplied by B&B Electronics. The TM2J uses the device with the 1587 hardware and protocol to connect in-line of the J1708 JBUS connection of the TM2J.
