Training Agenda: Upgrades Explanation of Duty-Cycle Diagnostic Mode Getting into Programming Calibration Inside the MiniRAE 2000/ppbRAE Configuration and Personal settings
Combating Long-Term PID Drift As the lamp surface gets dirty the light getting out of the lamp will be obscured and the PID signal will be reduced. If the PID was initially calibrated on 100 ppm isobutylene and suffered loss of signal drift from a dirty lamp then the PID might only read ppm when challenged with 100 ppm isobutylene. This would be a 20-30% loss of signal.
PIDs for Continuous VOC Monitoring Stopping for 4 hours of cleaning just is not practical and calibrating daily, weekly or even monthly can be too labor intensive. In duty cycling while the PID runs continuously the pump runs intermittently at some user defined duty cycle. The pump runs then turns off while the lamp remains on to clean the sensor and lamp surface. When concentration exceeds 2 ppm the pump runs continuously until the sensor is cleared.
PIDs for Continuous VOC Monitoring The user can set the cycle period from % of a 10 second interval. If set to 90% then it is on 9 seconds off 1 seconds. If set to 50% then it is on 5 off 5 seconds. Duty cycling will reduce loss of span sensitivity to typically less than 5% running 24 hours a day 7 days a week for over 90 days in backgrounds of less than 10 ppm.
Training Agenda: Upgrades Explanation of Duty-Cycle Diagnostic Mode Getting into Programming Calibration Inside the MiniRAE 2000/ppbRAE Configuration and Personal settings

Diagnostics: Raw PID Sensor Output 10A B10 A10 MiniRAE 2000 ppbrae ppbrae In fresh air the RAW reading should be within the indicated range Fresh air values significantly below the range could be due to an electronic problem. Fresh air values significantly higher, generally indicate a shorted or dirty sensor
Diagnostics: Raw PID Sensor Output 10A B10 A10 MiniRAE 2000 ppbrae ppbrae With span gas applied, the RAW reading should be within the indicated range Span gas: 100 ppm Isobutylene for MiniRAE ppm Isobutylene for ppbrae
Diagnostics: Raw Sensor Delta Values 10A >200 >100 > 400 MiniRAE 2000 ppbrae Determine Delta by subtracting span value from fresh air value If Delta value is less than that shown above, the Lamp or the PID sensor may need to be replaced
MiniRAE 2000: Lamp Test Last= 132 Unit reads Check Lamp? Answer Y/+ Instrument will run through a self-diagnostic on lamp If it passes, it will give you a reading, if it fails, it will tell you Bad Lamp

TN-163) Clean/Replace Sensor Clean/Replace Lamp Housing Clean Lamp Check Correction Factor/ Cal Memory Failed Span calibration Replace Lamp Replace Sensor Lamp Alarm Replace Lamp Reset Lamp Failure Threshold If you have firmware version 1.22A and lamp or unit is new, call for firmware 1.25 to upgrade or download off website (MiniRAE 2000)
MiniRAE 2000: PID Sensor Inspect sensor for damage and replace to rectify the following conditions: Bent electrode fingers Teflon mask warped so that sensing electrode shows Electrodes not in the same plane If problems persist, replace PID sensor Bent Electrode Straight Electrodes with mask removed for clarity Teflon Mask Warped
Maintenance Clean PID Lamp & Sensor When display creeps upwards after good zero When PID responds to moisture When movement of PID results in response on display Clean Sensor Bias Electrode Dirty Sensor Bias Electrode Sensing Electrode No dirt build-up to foster a decrease in airspace resistance Sensing Electrode Dirt build-up absorbs water and breaks down airspace resistance leading to sensor leakage or moisture response
Humidity Check Cup hand over inlet or breathe into inlet for seconds Do not block flow If M2K reads >2 ppm or ppbrae reads >500 ppb, then the sensor needs cleaning Maintenance
Maintenance How to Clean PID Sensor Always clean sample probe and replace or clean filters FIRST! If PID holds a stable zero after this step then further cleaning may not be necessary Use anhydrous methanol (Lamp cleaning solution), never use water Clean lamp face with lens tissue do not touch with your bare hands
Maintaining PID Sensor Cleaning the PID Sensor Clean sensor by immersion in cleaning solution Do not loosen or remove screws on PID sensor Remove the o-ring from the PID sensor If Ultrasonic Cleaner is not available Immerse in cleaning solution and agitate by hand Drying the PID Sensor Let air dry overnight Warm air (not hot) will speed drying
Humidity Filtering II Tubes Flex-I-Probe (p/n ) Tube Tip Breaker Tube Adapter (p/n ) Humidity Filtering II Tube (10-pack, p/n ) Temporary relief for a dirty sensor Dries sample gas for about ½ hour Measure VOCs; multiple sample use OK Useful for gasoline and chlorinated solvents CAUTION: May cause low response for some compounds or at low temperature or concentration
Diagnostics: Lamp Driver Ldrv= 230 Ldrv shows the value of the Lampdriver as calibrated at the factory This can be adjusted in the field, but the optimal value is the original setting Each time unit calibrates, instrument will reset the lampdriver
Diagnostics: Battery Ni-Cd/MH This screen shows which type of battery is installed. NiMH or Alkaline are available (very early units may have NiCad)
Diagnostics: Display Contrast CONTRAST In cold weather the display may fade prematurely and in hot weather the display may bleed Use Y/+ key to increase contrast and N/- key to decrease contrast. Press the MODE key to accept
Diagnostics: Battery Duration Test Battery Duration xx : xx Shows the run time of the last time the instrument turned itself off due to a low battery This is useful for battery life testing Charge battery completely Turn unit on and allow to run until battery dies Charge unit again and turn on in Diagnostic mode
Diagnostics: Adjust Pump Stall Pump = 8/ 8 Typical pump current without blockage should be between If there is a noticeable difference between pump current there may be a blockage or the pump needs to be rebuilt
Diagnostics: Adjust Pump Stall Stall 12 If the gas inlet is blocked but the pump does not stall (and no internal hoses are disconnected), or the pump shuts down too easily with just a slight blockage, the pump stall threshold may need adjustment.
Diagnostics: Adjust Pump Stall Typical pump current without blockage should be between 6-10 Block the pump inlet, if the pump current reading does not increase by more than 5 counts there may be a leak in the tubing or the pump is weak. With the inlet blocked, increase the stall value until it is about 5-8 counts above the unblocked reading using the Y/+ and N/- keys. Press MODE to Save new stall threshold Press Y/+ to confirm ( N/- or MODE will abandon the change)
Pump Issues Pump does not stall Adjust Pump Stall Threshold Check tubing for leaks Rebuild/clean pump Unit respond slowly to gas or Unit calibrates OK but doesn t see gas sample Check tubing for leaks Rebuild/clean pump
