V August 2016 Emerging Issues Transcript Introduction Hello, I m Mike Sculthorpe, welcome to the August 2016 Emerging Issues Seminar. As always, we are recording Emerging Issues in the Product Studio at GM World Headquarters in the Renaissance Center in Downtown Detroit. During the program today we will cover the latest service topics from Brand Quality and Engineering. We ll also answer questions from techs in the field. If you have a question you d like us to address, send it to EI@raytheon.com. We do our best to answer all of our . And of course we are always interested in hearing your comments and suggestions about topics you d like to see covered in future shows. To get credit for watching this program you must pass the test. At the end of the program I ll give you instructions on how to access the test. The SC symbol in the lower right corner of the screen identifies topics that should interest Service Consultants. Please be sure to let your Service Consultants know when you find content for them in the program. First up Top Stories. Top Stories In the mail bag this month we have a several questions from Cory Baker at Hazen Motor Company in Hazen North Dakota. Mike, I have several questions concerning the MDI 2. How do I enable the blue tooth feature of the MDI 2? When I go into the MDI manger it says the Bluetooth is disabled. Also, how are we supposed to connect the MDI 2 using the point to point feature? The dealer bought the Panasonic tough book tablet and I was hoping to use the point to point wireless to avoid stringing cables all over the vehicle when out on a test drive I did find the owner s manual on the dealer s tool website. It said the pairing should be automatic when the dongles are installed in the MDI 2 and the PC. Then all I have to do is connect the two using the USB cable and then open the MDI manager and the wireless link is supposed to sync up. I cannot seem to get this to work. Also I upgraded my shop PC to windows 10. I noticed when I open up a wiring diagram and click on the magnifying glass to zoom in on a diagram all I get is a blank screen. I know in internet explorer I had to

download the plugins, but windows Edge does not support those plugins. Is there something else that needs to be done? Hey Cory, great questions. Here is what I found. The MDI 2 does not use Bluetooth. The point to point wireless communication is strictly using the wireless adapters included with the MDI 2 kit. I assume that you saw Bluetooth State in the MDI Manager Properties tab? That feature is not available on the MDI 2. Unfortunately it s common software that s used on other tools that Bosch sells that do have Bluetooth capability. As far as the graphics viewer goes, because you have upgraded to windows 10, a wireless driver download is required. In TIS2Web select the question mark in the upper right corner, this is the link to the help screen. From there, select the MDI 2 Wireless Drivers (Windows 10) link and follow the directions. Also, the only supported browser for GM applications is IE 11, 32 bit. There is no plugin support for EDGE and no plans to do so. It will be necessary to download IE 11 and use that when accessing any GM application. As far as getting the point to point wireless to work, select the user manual link within TIS2Web help and click on MDI 2 to see if it provides any info you didn't already have. After that I would suggest giving Techline a call. Thanks for writing in Cory, I hope that helped Our next is from David Moore at Ron Tonkin Chevrolet in Portland Oregon. Here is David s Question. Mike, I performed product safety# 14294: Ignition Key (document ID: ) on a 2012 Camaro today. The key assembly kit provided to me by my parts department did not contain the two 18 mm key rings as noted in the bulletin. The customers supplied RKE transmitters did not have the 18 mm key rings attached either. After some field work with my parts department we had to take two 18 mm key rings from some RKE transmitters on the parts shelf to complete the recall. After the customer left we did some more homework and found engineering notes that contained a part number for the 18 mm key rings. Since the having 2 key rings of the correct size is a big part of this recall we felt the key assembly kit is incomplete. It could be an easily overlooked step too for such a simple recall. Thank you, David,

I checked in with Ann Breidis, the Brand Quality Manager for the Camaro and she said that removing the rings from the key package was an engineering change. We are not sure why. I suggested that the campaign be updated to show that the keys and key rings need to be ordered separately. Thanks for the heads up! I hope this will save others some time and insure that the recall is completed correctly. Next, we have a list of Engineering Information bulletins and Part Restriction changes. The following Engineering Information PI s have recently been released: PIE0367: Poor or intermittent A/C/ Performance on 2016 Colorado, Canyon PIE0368: Vehicle Overheating, Noise Originating from Engine Coolant Fans and/or Poor Engine Coolant Fan Performance on Chevrolet Tahoe PPV PIE0369: SES Light On with One or More DTCs Set On 2016 Cadillac CT6 Chevrolet Camaro and 2017 Cadillac XT5 With RPO LGW or LGX PIE0370: Rattle Noise from Second Row Seat On 2015, 2016 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe and GMC Yukon Models PIE0371: Check Engine Light, Delayed Shifts and/or Transmission Stuck in Gear with DTC P0751, P0752, P0756, P0757, P0761 or P0762 Set on 2016 Silverado, Sierra Allison A100 Trans (RPO MW7) The following Engineering Information PI s have been canceled: PIE0350: Bang or Loud Noise with No Forward (Drive) or reverse Ranges on Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and Yukon PIE0353: Shake or Shudder on Light Throttle Acceleration or Steady State Cruise on 2016 Chevrolet Silverado LD, 2016 GMC Sierra Equipped with 8L90 (RPO M5U) and 5.3 Engine (RPO L83) PIE0354: Coolant leak from Radiator on Hummer H3 PIE0361: Front windshield wiper not working on Chevrolet Trax And the following parts restrictions have been canceled: PIP5367: 2016 Buick Encore 1.4L (RPO LE2) Engine Exchange PIC5520T: eassist Drive Motor Generator Battery Module for Buick Lacrosse, Regal Chevrolet Malibu ECO Chevrolet Impala All equipped with eassist (RPO HP6) Our last story this month lists the new World Class Technicians: Jerry Hanson at Silverthorne Chevrolet in Robinson Illinois Jeremy Aimi at Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet in Charlotte North Carolina

Up next, our Featured Topic. Featured Topic This month s featured topic is PIT5509 which provides diagnostic help for the integrated trailer brake system on the K2 trucks. The integrated trailer brake control system, RPO JL1 on the K2 trucks is compatible with either electromagnetic or electro-over hydraulic trailer brakes. The Chassis Control Module, or CCM, must determine which type of brakes the trailer is equipped with so the system can output correctly for that trailer's brake system. Because the CCM has to determine the type of trailer brake system that is being used, the system can be sensitive to a variety of trailer wiring issues. The Trailer Brake Power Control Module and the CCM communicate over a LIN bus on circuit The Trailer Brake Power Control Module continuously sends a test pulse out on the trailer control circuit 47, looking for a trailer that has been connected. That information is communicated to the CCM which monitors the way the test pulse reacts when a trailer is connected to determine which type of braking system the trailer is equipped with. After the system detects the trailer, it will continue to send this test pulse on circuit 47 to monitor both the truck and trailer circuitry. If a fault is detected, the CCM notifies the driver by requesting a "Check Trailer Wiring" or "Service Trailer Brake System" message on the DIC. The PI provides directions for assembling a test harness for the Trailer brake system so we put a video together to show you the steps. Let s take a look. PIT5509 provides some diagnostic tips for the Integrated Trailer Brake Control System, RPO JL1, on the K2 trucks. When a customer brings in a vehicle with a concern that a DIC message stating Check Trailer Wiring or Service Trailer Brake System was seen while towing their trailer, the concern could be with the vehicle

or with the trailer. Most likely, they didn t bring the trailer with them so how can you check the system out? Diagnosis begins by determining what message is being displayed and if DTC C1114 is stored in the Chassis Control Module. This will help determine the type of fault being detected. If the Check Trailer Wiring message is displayed and DTC C1114 is NOT setting, the system detected a trailer but also detected an open or high resistance on the trailer brake circuit # 47. Be aware that if the trailer is disconnected with the ignition ON, it is normal to get this message. If the Check Trailer Wiring message is displayed with DTC C1114 set, the system detected a short to ground on the trailer brake circuit. If the Service Trailer Brake System message is displayed with DTC C1114, the system detected a short to power on the trailer brake circuit or a poor trailer ground. To test the vehicle system, the Bulletin provides a parts list and assembly instructions for a simple harness that can test the system. If the system tests properly, the problem is most likely with the trailer. If possible, use a Pollak Heavy Duty 7-way Trailer connector, part number This connector will provide the best connection to the vehicle and avoid false test results because of connection concerns. Pollak also supplies the 7-way connector on the truck. The electric trailer brake magnets should be purchased in pairs, one pair for each axle. This simple schematic shows how the tester should be wired. Allow 6 to 7 feet of wire from the trailer connector to the first break out. This allows the harness to be routed from the trailer connector, up and over the tailgate and into the truck bed for road testing. 12 gauge wire should be used to provide proper current flow. Both the trailer brake supply circuit and the ground circuit should have the brake magnets wired in parallel. Install one wire to terminal 2 of the trailer connector, which is the brake controller output, and the other wire to terminal 1, which is the ground circuit. Tap into the main wire for each brake magnet by removing a small piece of insulation, then wrapping and soldering a short jumper wire to it. A splice clip from the terminal kit could be used to provide a stronger connection prior to soldering. Securely tape each connection point with electrical tape. Shrink tubing or tape can be used to keep the wires from tangling. Terminals from the J terminal kit were used for this demonstration. We attached the female terminal onto the test harness and covered it with a small piece of shrink tubing. The male terminal is crimped onto the brake magnet lead. For the purpose of flexibility, the harness was made up with 8 sets of leads for the magnets which allows the tester to mimic a 1, 2, 3 or 4 axle trailer. To begin testing, connect the appropriate number of brake magnets to the harness dependent on the number of axles on the customer s trailer. These magnets are non-directional so the leads can be attached either way.

Lay the harness out in the bed of the truck or in the cargo area of a SUV. Rout the harness over the tailgate or out the door and insert the trailer 7-way connector into the trucks trailer outlet. Inside the vehicle, set up GDS 2 to view CCM data display and look for the Trailer Brake Type data parameter. It should now show Electro-magnetic. Take the vehicle out for a road test and monitor the DIC for any messages. If no messages appear, DTC C1114 does not reset, and a review of GDS 2 doesn t show a change in the data parameter, the concern is most likely with the trailer. One likely reason for many of these issues is a poor or loose connection between the truck and trailer 7- way connector. It is recommended to use a "Pollak HD" RV trailer connector, as shown in the latest version of PIT5311. Using a Pollak trailer connector will provide the best connection possible. Of course, if the tester shows no problems with the truck system, repairs to the trailer would not be covered under warranty. Another adaptation for this harness could be the addition of a lamp assembly. This would also allow testing of the remainder of the wiring in the trailer connector, again ruling out the vehicle as the source of trailer concerns. But remember that none of this wiring has anything to do with the trailer brake system, only terminal 2 or circuit 47, which is the brake controller output and terminal 1 which is the ground circuit can affect the trailer brake system. I would like to thank Jim Will at TAC for coming up with this idea and putting the PI together. It seems like a very handy tool to have in the tool box. Up next is What s Hot for Cars. What s Hot For Cars To start cars this month, take a look at 16-NA-168. It provides a service tip concerning the protective caps mounted at the tank strap anchor points on a 2016 or 17 Volt. When replacing fuel tank, the new design tank has smaller padding than the original design and requires the caps to prevent contact between the tank and the vehicle body. When replacing the #4 cross bar, inspect the padding on fuel tank to see which design tank is on the vehicle. If the vehicle has the original design fuel tank, NO protective caps need to be installed. If the vehicle has the new design fuel tank, protective caps need to be installed to the #4 cross bar. Before installing the caps, take a look at the bracket on the #4 end cross bar for the HV battery. If it has a key shaped hole, simply install the cap. If the bracket doesn t come with the key shaped hole, you will need to grind off the attaching feature on the back of the caps and retain them to the bracket using On the 2016 and 17 Malibu, if the deck lid release won t operate, SI provides a method for lowering the rear seat from inside so that you can reach the release. It is located under Body Systems, Vehicle Access and then Repair instructions.

Climb into the back seat and slide a trim tool between the rear window panel trim and the seat back cushion just to the right of the seat belt. Fish around to locate the cable in the opening of the latch and then pivot the handle of the trim tool to your right which will move the release cable to your left and release the rear seat back cushion. As always, this will be easier if you can look at another vehicle with the seat lowered to see what you are doing. Once the seat is lowered, reach through and pull the auxiliary rear compartment latch release handle to open the deck lid As part of your diagnosis, be sure to check the auxiliary release to ensure it and the attached cable are fully seated. If not, this could cause the electric release to be inop. Next is bulletin 16-NA-237 which covers 2016 and 17 ATS and CTS. On these vehicles, if you find DTC U0155, lost communication with Instrument cluster, stored as history in the Passenger Presence System, it should be ignored. There is a timing issue between the PPS and IPC when the key is first turned on. The timing issue will correct itself and the DTC moves to history. If this DTC is stored in any other module, continue with SI diagnostics. Bulletin 16-NA-188 covers an intermittent loss of function with the radio and HVAC after cycling the ignition on. Typically, cycling the ignition will resolve the concern. A new radio control software update is available to correct the concern. If you are working on certain 2015 or 2016 Sonic or Trax for a customer concern that the AC is not blowing cold, bulletin 16-NA-028 may provide some help. The manufacturer of the condenser has found that some units were produced with a mis-positioned block off plate which allows refrigerant to bypass part of the condenser. This will result in refrigerant not releasing enough heat, leading to a loss of cooling capacity. This is difficult to see visually so the bulletin provides a quick test. Use an infrared thermal gun to take readings at the locations noted on the left side of the condenser with the engine running and AC ON. If the readings are within 10 degrees Fahrenheit, replace the condenser. If the readings are greater than 10 degrees different, replace the AC condenser. All new stock has been verified as correctly built. Next we have some information on air bag removal from the steering wheel on the 2016 Malibu. Some technicians have reported having difficulty releasing the air bag. Also, several returned air bags have shown damage. The current directions in SI may be a little confusing. They tell you that after installing 2.5 mm Allen wrenches into the access holes on the sides of the steering wheel, you need to apply and keep constant pressure towards the front of the vehicle on both Allen wrenches. The access holes are located at approximately 5 and 7 O clock on the steering wheel back cover. SI calls out 2.5 mm Allen wrenches but 3mm or 1/8 will also work and it may be easier to come up with 2.

Here is a look at the steering wheel with the air bag removed. The release tool enters through the service hole and is guided through 2 metal hoops. The air bag retaining wire is on the far side of the metal hoop. Slide the tool towards the center of the wheel until resistance is felt. Here is a close up of the tool pressing against the retention wire. Once in position, push both tools further inward at the same time to release the air bag. After releasing the air bag, rotate the top down toward you to expose the connectors. Do not let the air bag hang by the wiring. Also, be careful to not scratch or scuff the chrome trim, switches, back cover or leather with the back side of the air bag. Finally, lift the orange CPA on each connector to release the connector from the air bag Before reinstalling the air bag, make sure the retention wires are properly positioned. This picture shows the wire out of position. If the air bag is installed with the wire pushed inward like this, it may be very difficult to remove it in the future. It is important that you slide the tool straight in through the access hole without pushing it toward the front or rear of the vehicle. That would cause the tool to miss the guide loop. CHANGE OTS ON TURN Our last topic in cars is the all-new 2017 LaCrosse. It is longer, lower and wider than the previous design and is built on a stronger structure. With all that, it weighs about 300 pounds less than its predecessor. Both the front wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions are equipped with the 3.6 liter V-6 engine and an Aisin AF50-8 transmission. The engine features Stop Start technology. When the engine auto stops, the tachometer will drop to the Auto Stop position. When the ignition is shut off, the tach will move to the OFF position. Other standard engine features include Active Fuel Management, Direct Injection and Continuously Variable Valve Timing. It supplies 305 horsepower at 6,800 RPM and 268 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 RPM. Electronic Precision Shift is standard and shifts the transmission by wire no more shift cable! The selected gear position illuminates red on the shifter and the shifter position is determined by 2 internal sensors that each transmit an X and Y coordinate signal to the Chassis Control Module. The Chassis Control Module sends messages to the Transmission Range Control Module using High Speed GMLAN and the Range Control Module, which mounts over the manual shift shaft, then commands the Range Selector Actuator to move the shift shaft to the desired position. The available AWD system with Active Twin Clutch provides greater handling and stability by electronically splitting the torque as needed between the rear wheels using twin clutches to provide additional traction, stability and control. 10 airbags supply protection for both front and rear seat occupants. Other standard safety systems include: Forward Collision Alert

Lane Departure Warning Lane Keep Assist Side Blind Zone Alert with Lane Change Alert Rear Vision Camera Front Pedestrian Braking Forward Automatic Braking Following Distance Indicator Rear Cross Traffic Alert Safety Alert Seat Forward Automatic Braking Adaptive Cruise Control is also an available option The entertainment system features an 8 inch diagonal touch screen with a frameless design and voice recognition. For more information on this vehicle take a look at bulletin 16-NA-230 That s all we have for cars, What s Hot for Trucks is next. What s Hot For Trucks To start Trucks, we have an update for PIT5501 which covers 2016 Silverado and Sierra 2500 and 3500 with an owner concern that the steering feels loose or has excessive play. We covered the adjustment procedure in a video in the June 2016 Emerging Issues. In the final steps, the torque spec for the adjuster nut that we called out was 75 to 85 Newton meters. The update has increased that to 85 to 102 Newton meters. Be sure to use the new torque spec when performing lash adjustment on this steering gear. Next up is PIT5404 which covers 2015 or 2016 Escalade, Suburban, Tahoe or Yukon with a customer concern of a buffeting vibration or drone noise. It may be more noticeable while in V4 mode and with engine speed in the 1100 to 1400 RPM range. If the concern is excessive it may excite the roof sheet metal making the issues worse. Refer to PIT5318 for directions on how to repair the bonding between the roof panel and the roof bows. Begin repairs by attempting to duplicate the concern using information from the customer like engine speed and vehicle speed. Use the Pico Scope with the sensor on the inboard seat track and record measurements of the drone while in V4 mode. Verify that the concern is only present during V4 mode operation by switching back and forth between Drive and manual 5th or 6th gear to force the engine back into V8 operation.

The Pico readings should be E2 and the frequencies are typically 36 to 48 Hz, depending on speed. If the readings are in this range, continue with the steps of the PI. If not, refer to SI for further diagnosis. Active Noise Cancelation or ANC should be checked for proper operation. Inspect the vehicle for any aftermarket audio components that could interfere with ANC. Also look for any objects that could be blocking the ANC microphones or any of the speakers. Remove the AMP fuse to disable ANC and road test to determine if the noise improves. If so, the subwoofer may be wired backwards. Inspect the exhaust system while cold and hot. Move the transmission from neutral to forward and then to reverse gear. The PI provides a list of items to inspect. Follow the steps of the Exhaust and Powertrain Settling Process. The engine mount to frame bolts, transmission or transfer case mount to crossmember bolts and exhaust system hangers should be loosened but not removed. With the vehicle at ride height set the park brake and apply the base brakes. Turn traction control off and then brake torque in drive and reverse with the engine at normal operating temperatures then place the trans in neutral and turn the engine off. Retighten all loosened fasteners to specs only using hand tools. PIT5284 was recently updated. It covers 2015 and 2016 K2 SUVs with a second row seat rattle. The first possible condition is a striker that is not aligned properly fore aft in the latch opening. This could cause a rattle, prevent the seat from flipping forward or keep it from latching down easily. The second condition is a latch that has uneven opening side to side. In this picture, the left side protrudes down farther than the right side. This can cause a rattle and may also make it difficult to secure or release the latch. The third concern is for split bench seats. The inboard latch on the 60 percent bench may not be properly aligned in the striker opening causing a rattle and possibly not allowing the seat to flip forward or latch down easily. The last condition is a seat base plate contacting the ribs of the floor pan. The PI goes on to provide diagnostic tips and repair procedures for each of these concerns. Including using an adjustable wide mouth metal working tool to carefully adjust the striker to the center of the latch opening for condition 1 and adding a 2.6 millimeter thick flat washer over the 40 percent seat base stud which is the seat-to-seat attachment. This will slightly tilt the seat riser forward which will in turn pull the 60 percent seat inboard latch forward. Next we have a few quick notes concerning Accessory wheels on the XT5. If the vehicle is ordered with accessory wheels from the factory, the vehicle will be delivered to your dealer with transit wheels. These wheels have TPM sensors installed. Your ADI will receive the order for the Accessory wheels and will build up the wheel, tire and new TPMs. The assemblies are balanced and center caps are installed. The wheel assemblies are sent to your dealer with new lug nuts.

Someone at the dealer removes the transit wheels and tires. These need to be returned to the ADI. The new wheel assemblies should be checked for proper balance and then installed on the vehicle with the supplied lug nuts and then learn the new TPM sensors to the vehicle. The ADI will break down the transit wheels, saving the tires and TPMs. The wheels are scrapped. These removed tires and TPMs will be used on the next set of Accessory wheels they assemble. We have another tip on the XT5 and Acadia. Vehicles equipped with the entry level cluster. These vehicles may have an additional message show up when the vehicle is coasting. In the fuel economy screen, the word Regen may show on the right side of the display. The Battery REGEN indicator signals when the engine control module is boosting system voltage during periods of vehicle deceleration. This energy is stored in the battery and can be used at a later time to lower the generator load on the engine, resulting in fuel economy gains. On XT5 built prior to June 1st, it is possible that the long range radar may be inop due to a mis-build of the front fascia. The left side of the lower grill on vehicles with ESS2 should be fairly smooth. The Long Range Radar unit is mounted behind this panel and needs the smooth surface to work properly. Vehicle without ESS2 will have a left lower grill that has noticeable ribs as shown here. This concern could also show up after a collision repair. If the long range radar is showing as inop, make a quick check of the grill before beginning diagnosis. Our last XT5 topic is a new booklet that has been released covering operation of the Electronic Precision Shifter. The booklet should be hanging on the shifter and must be left there for the customer. Here is the English section. It now provides text as well as pictures to explain operation of the electronic transmission shifter. That s it for Trucks. Powertrain is next. Powertrain To start Powertrain, we wanted to review bulletin 16-NA-222. It covers all 2017 and prior cars and trucks and discusses engine concerns that may not be warrantable Content is broken down into 3 areas: Conditions That May Result from not Following Scheduled Maintenance Conditions that May Result From Improper Service and Conditions That May Result From Aftermarket Calibrations

Under lack of maintenance, this picture of an oil filter and cap show sludge in the cap and heavy debris or sludge in the filter pleats. It should also be inspected for damage, holes, tears, improper installation or missing seals. Sludge in the bottom of the pan blocking the pick-up tube screen is another clue that maintenance has not been performed. As is sludge build up on the camshaft. In the Improper service section, this picture of debris in the combustion chamber is a result of air bypassing the filter. An improperly installed filter can cause this. Here you can see damage to the bearings chrome finish again caused by debris entering the engine, possibly from previous engine repairs. Premature wear increases clearance and may cause low oil pressure or a knocking noise. Aftermarket calibrations can cause pre-detonation resulting in damage to the piston skirt. Improper engine warm up creates excessive heat in the piston, causing them to seize to the cold cylinder wall resulting in broken piston lands. Engine damage as a result of any of these reasons should not be covered under warranty. Refer to the bulletin for further details. If you are working on a 2016 or 2017 Cruze with a manual transmission and have to remove the shift knob, you need to know about a little clip that holds the knob to the shifter assembly. That clip has to be damaged to remove the knob. We put a video together to show how it works. To remove the shift knob, push a trim stick into the right rear side of the console trim plate. Continue to push the trim stick inward until the trim plate is released from the console. Then lift the boot up over the shift knob. The shift knob is held in place with a retainer. Push in the tabs on the left and right sides of the retainer firmly and slide it down the shaft. Using a pair of side cutters cut the retainer to remove it from the shaft. Next, remove the knob and boot by lifting upward. The control lever release pawl should come off with the boot. The retainer has small fingers which prevent from being removed from the shaft without damaging it. To reassemble the shifter, a new retainer, part number must be used. Insert it into the bottom of the shift knob, narrow end first. Rotate it until the tabs line up with the windows in the knob and press it in. Back in the vehicle, install the knob, pawl and retainer over the shift shaft. Rotate the knob until it is properly aligned to the shift shaft. With the pawl in place, lock the knob onto the shift shaft by using a continuous, rapid downward motion. A snap noise should be heard and felt as the knob locks onto the shaft.

While holding the release pawl stationary with one hand, lift upward on the knob with your other hand to ensure the knob is properly seated. Pull the control lever release to confirm that control lever release pawl moves up and down as intended. Pull the boot back down over the knob and install the front clip into the bezel first. Then work around the boot to install the other clips. Remember that if the knob is removed for any reason, the retainer is damaged and will not hold the knob in place properly. A new retainer must be used each time. This might be a good item to ask the parts department stock. The part number is Bulletin 15-NA-067 provides a head up on the 2016 and 2017 K2 pickups equipped with the 5.3 liter engine. There are 2 different styles of pump used on this engine. Each uses a different fuel pipe. This is the Stanadyne style fuel pump part number and the fuel pipe is part number When replacing the high pressure fuel pump, the same style pump should be used. This is the Delphi style fuel pump, part number and it uses fuel pipe part number If the incorrect fuel pump and line are installed DTC P00C6 may set during cold starts and DTCs P228C and P228D may set during other extreme hot or cold driving. Next we have a quick request from the hybrid propulsion team and 2017 Volt and Malibu Transmission Returns Must be properly strapped down in the cocoon to prevent damage. All electric drive units are returned for root cause analysis by the propulsion team. Many are put on the dyno and some in cars prior to teardown. This cannot be accomplished if due care is not used to ensure the part is properly secured for the return trip. Our last story in Powertrain is bulletin 16-NA-118 covering 2013 through 2016 Sonic with the 1.8 liter engine and a number of different customer concerns including no start, MIL illuminated and loss of steering assist. Inspect the engine harness as it routes near the ECM lower mounting bracket stud. The stud may have pierced the harness, shorting any of the wires inside the harness to ground or each other. If the harness is contacting the stud, unwrap and inspect the wiring. Repair as necessary and rewrap. Use tie straps or tape to hold the harness away from the stud. That s it for Powertrain. Back to basics is next. Back to Basics In back to basics this month we are talking about the Express up and down window function on the 2016 Camaro Convertible, which has a couple of quirks you should be aware of. We made a short video, so let s take a look.

If diagnosis requires disconnecting the vehicle battery, the power windows may not work as expected once power is restored. This could also occur if the window motor or the BCM is disconnected. The power windows will not fully raise, but will fully lower and return to the original position. Holding the power window switch in the up position will not correct the problem. The power window system must be relearned. Begin the relearn procedure by ensuring that the folding top is fully closed and latched and all of the doors are closed. If either item is not complete, the door glass will not fully close. Next, fully raise each of the windows by holding up on the power window switch until the glass raises to the up most position. Next, use the window switch to fully lower one of the rear windows. Continue to hold the switch in the down position for an additional 5 seconds. Next, use the window switch to fully raise the window. Hold the switch in the up position for an additional 5 seconds after the window is fully raised. Repeat this procedure for the other rear door glass. Next, use the window switch, to lower the driver window and hold the switch in the down position for an additional 5 seconds. Release the switch and then fully raise the window. Hold the switch in the up positon for an additional 5 seconds. Repeat this procedure for the right front window. The express up and down function for all 4 windows should now be operational. A momentary press of the switch should cause the window to fully open or close. Another necessary parameter for the door window express up or down feature to function is that the rear windows must be fully closed. If either window is open, even a small amount, the express function will not work. As soon as the rear window is fully closed, the express function will begin working again. Also, the express up and down feature will not function if the folding top is not either fully open or fully closed. Once top operation is complete, the express function will again be operational. It is important to remember the express up or down feature will not work unless the rear windows are in the full up position and the top is either fully opened or fully closed. This would be a good thing for your service consultants to be aware of. That s it for Back to Basics. Fix It Right The First Time is next. Fix it Right the First Time Fix it Right the First Time is where we review COMMONLY MIS-DIAGNOSED symptoms. One for cars and one for Trucks

For cars, we have a customer concern that the radio volume level is too loud on start-up on 2016 Buick Cascada models with radio RPO UHQ Some customers may comment that the minimum default volume will not go below 19. As a result, customers who turn the vehicle/radio off with the volume level above 19 will experience high audio volume upon start up because it will only default to a minimum start up level of 19. This may be the result of an audio calibration concern. What you SHOULD DO is turn the radio to XM channel 0, so there is no audio. Then turn the volume all the way up. If the radio will go up to level 45. Use SPS to reprogram the radio with the latest calibration on TIS2web. What you SHOULD NOT DO, is replace the radio or other components without performing the procedure outlined in 16-NA-217 first. For trucks we have PIT5512 which covers Colorado and Canyon models. Customers may comment that remote functions do not operate after the initial button press on the remote. This may be caused by aftermarket LED dome lamps. What you SHOULD DO is check for aftermarket LED dome lamps. Inform the customer that LED dome lamps have been shown to emit frequencies that can block remote functions when the lights are illuminated. To restore remote functions the LED dome lamps should be replaced with the original lamps. What you SHOULD NOT DO is replace any other components for this concern OK, that s it for Fix it Right the First Time. I d like to thank all of you for watching today. And, as always, if you have any questions on what was covered today please send us an at EI@raytheon.com, and we ll be sure to answer them as quickly as possible.
