4 September 2014 The Automechanika trade fair took place in Frankfurt for the 23 rd time and was a great success. 140,000 trade visitors from 173 countries came to see the latest innovations of the international aftermarket. One in four visitors came from the workshop sector. Herth+Buss presented a wide selection of its new products. From Inspector, the diagnosis champion for Asian vehicles, to the Air- Guard (programming device for tyre pressure sensors), there was plenty of interest in our product highlights. Visitors could also enjoy surprising audiovisual impressions of our service provision at our stand, which was partially constructed as a huge packaging box. The motto: our packaging contains more than just the product. 5 Herth+Buss supports workshop scheme TRUSTED WORKSHOP scheme Customer satisfaction is the central benchmark that independent workshops use when measuring their work and their success. But workshop reviews often represent only a single point in time, which identifies past reviews. Specialist work is often prepared once according to a prescribed service catalogue, with its implementation being assessed and evaluated by inspectors. This means that only the current workshop service can be identified. The TRUSTED WORKSHOP scheme, run by the workshop association Mister A.T.Z., has been an effective alternative for several years. Participation is open to any independent and owner-run workshop that works in the areas of mechanics, electronics, wheels and tyres, or paint and bodywork. The scheme s key feature is that is the drivers who assess the workshop, not just after a single visit, but over a longer period of time throughout the customer relationship. How does the customer experience and assess the repair work they have done? How comprehensive is the service that the workshop offers? The scheme takes place every year from April to October. Afterwards, all valid voting cards are allocated to the respective workshop and the questions are evaluated. Any workshop that has received at least 50 voting cards is then allowed to carry the TRUSTED WORKSHOP seal of approval for a year, and use this in their advertising. 9 Fan controller For a guaranteed clear view Now also available for Citroën, Peugeot and VAG Everybody knows that you need a clear view to drive safely. However, the interior blowers (blower stages 1-4) on many vehicles are defective and have a restricted function, or even none at all. If cold air and rain then fog up the windscreen, this can quickly become a safety risk. The only solution is a working blower. For vehicles equipped with air conditioning, the individual blower stages are automatically controlled. If one stage of the blower fails, this is usually due to a defective blower controller rather than the interior blower itself. As the series resistor limits current flow most strongly at low blower levels, the blower controller can burn out. Even at temperatures of -10 degrees, a standard lead acid battery will only have around two thirds of its rated capacity. At -22 degrees, this falls to as low as half. If the battery is older or is often used only for short-distance journeys, starting the engine is often a thankless task in icy temperatures. On top of this, vehicle electrics have advanced rapidly in recent years. On the one hand, these make vehicles safer and more comfortable, but also require significant amounts of energy. With these increased demands on overall energy supply in mind, battery maintenance is particularly important, especially for those travelling short distances often. Regular recharging is the best way to prevent battery problems. For this reason, battery recharges should be a standard process for every visit to the workshop. 26 Jakoparts Brake discs with ECE-R90 approval Meeting the highest quality standards is a matter of course for us! Everyone is already well aware of the importance of brakes as a safety component. However, not all brake discs are the same. In most EU Member States brake discs are not subject to approval and are therefore not required to undergo any test procedures. The ECE-R90 standard was introduced in 1995 and initially applied to replacement brake pad units with the aim of setting a minimum standard to increase road safety. In 2011 this standard was expanded to include brake discs and drums. In contrast to the requirements for brake pads, ECE-R90 approval is not legally prescribed for brake discs and drums. For ECE-R90 approval to be granted, exacting demands are placed on both the component s properties and manufacturers. Herth+Buss has the status of a brake disc manufacturer, and we therefore consider ourselves obligated to meet the responsibilities placed on manufacturers. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority carries out an audit every year to verify that we are meeting this responsibility. We recognised early on that, once such a standard is established, a corresponding statutory provision will follow sooner or later, explains Rolf-Christoph Engel, the product manager in charge of this issue. We are gradually having our brake discs tested and certified in accordance with the prescribed ECE-R90 regulations. Currently, we already have over 300 article numbers with this certificate, with more approvals coming every week. The requirements placed on the quality of brake discs are based on the quality standards for original spare parts and are correspondingly stringent. Maximum permissible tolerances must be complied with for all key geometric dimensions. The greatest obstacle standing in the way of approval being granted is the strength test, which is conducted on an inertia dynamometer. This simulates a fully laden vehicle being braked from maximum speed to a complete standstill. This test is run umpteen times in succession and the brake discs must not show any noteworthy damage. Even after approval has been granted, compliance with all tolerances, the material composition, the cast structure as well as the hardness and tensile strength of the brake discs are inspected at regular intervals. Another quality feature of our brake discs is that they are checked for imbalance. This process is standard for OE components, with all internally vented Herth+Buss brake discs also undergoing the checks. 27 Assembled for each cylinder block Cylinder head bolt kits for lightweight engines Lightweight engines are the main form of drive unit in modern vehicle manufacture. Due to the high requirements placed on these engines, the cylinder head bolt has also undergone significant change. Tightening the bolt with a torque wrench to seal the cylinder head, for example, is becoming ever rarer. Our Jakoparts range now includes cylinder head bolt kits. The cylinder head bolts have been subjected to material testing as per DIN guidelines and are suitable for lightweight motors that consist of an aluminium motor and a grey cast iron crankcase. Aluminium engine components generally expand twice as much as the cylinder head bolts. In newer engine generations, the bolts are tightened using the torque angle method. This is a combined process, in which the cylinder head bolts are not only elastically stretched, but also plastically elongated. This removes the need to tighten them manually. The person fitting the cylinder head bolts simply needs to check that they are screwed in in precisely the defined tightening order. If this does not happen, it can lead to tension and distortions in the engine components. Actuators + sensors are increasingly important for engine management in modern engines to provide flexible systems with the necessary impulses for optimal engine control. Sensor failures can often result in significant problems in the control system or even expensive total failure of the drive.
