14 Page 13 SPECIFICATION MATERIALS COVERS are manufactured from 7mm thick aluminium diamond plate grade 5086-H34 that has good welding characteristics and resistance to corrosion in marine environments. FRAMES and reinforcement are manufactured from grade 6061-T6 and 6063-T5 extruded aluminium sections that are heat treatable and corrosion resistant. ASTRAGALS, SUPPORT BEAMS and BEAM SADDLES (when fitted) are manufactured from grade 6061-T6 and 6063-T5 extruded aluminium extrusions. HINGES and FASTENERS are manufactured from grade T-316 stainless steel. COMPRESSION SPRINGS are manufactured from grade 17-4 PH stainless steel and are contained in a closed stainless steel cylinder. Grade 17-4 PH combines excellent corrosion resistance with high strength and hardness. HOLD OPEN ARMS are manufactured from grade T-316 stainless steel. SLAM LOCKS are manufactured from grade T-316 stainless steel. SEALS and NOISE CUSHIONS are manufactured from neoprene rubber. 15 Page 14 UNIT MAKE UP Standard size units comprise of one or two cover parts only. Minimum opening height of covers required to accommodate lifting arms is 450mm on 1465kg/sq.mtr.units and 600mm on 7 tonne wheel load units. ASSIST LIFT COMPRESSION SPRINGS Each cover part is fitted with sufficient compression springs to keep lift load below 18 kilogrammes irrespective of the size of cover. Covers are gauge tested for lift load compliance prior to leaving the factory. HINGES The hinge positions on standard two part covers are normally fitted at opposing ends although the main design criteria is to minimise the height of covers when in the upright position. Hinges can be purpose positioned (when specifically requested) to permit covers to open away from obstructions. According to individual designs, some covers will protrude into frame when open. Covers that protrude into a channel frame when open have concealed hinges, are easier drain and therefore less cost than covers that do not protrude into frame when open, but have visible hinges and require the addition of a sub-frame channel to effect drainage. The protrude in frame channel may require occasional maintenance to remove build up of detritus. CENTRAL SUPPORT SYSTEMS Two part covers for 1465kg/sq.mtr.loadings where water intrusion is not a determining factor have an astragal (aluminium flat bar extrusion) welded to the leading edge of one leaf to provide support and cover the gap between covers when in the closed position. Two part covers for 1465kg/sq.mtr.loadings where water intrusion is a determining factor have a drip channel welded to the leading edge of one lead to provide support and provide a drainage conduit into the side frame. Two part covers for 7 tonne wheel loadings where the central cover joint is less than 4.7 metres in length have a support beam welded to the leading edge of one cover that rests on the frame at both ends. Two part covers for 7 tonne wheel loadings where the central cover joint exceeds 4.7 metres in length have a stainless steel saddle welded to the frame that accommodates a removable aluminium support beam. HOLD OPEN ARMS Covers are fitted with a swivel operating hold open arm that automatically locks covers in the upright position until deliberately released by the operator to effect cover closure. The stainless steel arm is coated red in order to be easily noticeable to the operator. SLAM LOCKS Covers are fitted with stainless steel slam locks that can be operated from above ground using a removable Allen key or from below ground by the quick release handle.

16 Page 15 SECURITY Operating keyways are closed by a threaded metal insert that prohibits the entry of detritus. Hinges are tamper proof. Units can be fitted with concealed padlocks for additional security (if required). SEALING FACILITIES In those units designed to inhibit the intrusion of water, a 38mm drainage coupling is incorporated in the channel frame to facilitate removal of water to a soakaway. A neoprene seal is fitted between the cover and frame. NOISE CUSHION In those units where water intrusion is not a determining factor, a neoprene noise cushion is interposed between cover and frame.

37 Page 36 STORAGE, HANDLING, INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF GATIC HALLIDAY ALUMINIUM ASSIST LIFT COVERS AND FRAMES STORAGE Prior to installation access covers should be stored in a dry area on the shipping pallets. HANDLING Standard practice precautions should be observed whenever handling or moving Palletized access covers by fork lift trucks. INSTALLATION The following are recommended installation procedures: 1) Formwork should be flush to the inside of the frame. 2) Units should be secured to formwork using acceptable construction practices. 3) Cover should be kept in closed position during pouring of concrete. 4) Concrete should be leveled to finish with the surface of the frame. 5) Formwork should be left in place for a minimum of twenty four hours after pouring of concrete. 6) All excess concrete should be removed from frame, cover and cover seat whilst still wet. MAINTENANCE Because GATIC HALLIDAY units are of aluminium and stainless steel construction they require minimal maintenance. However to ensure optimum performance the following procedures should be carried out annually: 1) Apply a light coating of machine oil to all hinges and hardware. 2) Apply graphite to the interior of all locking devices. 3) Remove all debris from the cover seat and around hinges. 4) Check and tighten loose hardware.
