5 VEGETABLES FOR FRESH MARKET Revised Estimates, By Sea~onal Groups and States, 1964 through 1970 Acreage, Production, and In this publ ication, the Crop Reporting Board presents revised official estimates of acreage, production, and value of the principal fresh market vegetables, melons, mint for oil, and strawberries by seasonal groups in the major producing States, including Hawaii for the years and Alaska~ These estimates continue the series published in U. S. Department of Agriculture' Statistical Bulletin No. 126, IICommercial Vegetables for Fresh Market, Acreage, Prod,uction, and, ," Statistical Bulletin No. 212, "Vegetables for Fresh Market, Acreage, Production, and, ,11 Statistical Bulletin No. 300, IIVegetables for Fresh Market, Acreage, Production, and, ," and ~tatistical Bulletin No. 412, "Vegetables for Fresh Market, Acre,age, Production, and, 'Vegetable estimates for related to total commercial fresh market production of these crops in the States are included. Fresh market vegetable estimates publ ished by the Department for are not necessarily comparable with estimates for 1939 to date. In the earl ier period, estimates were confined primarily to well-recognized commercial areas from which substantial quantities were shipped--usually by rail--to distant terminal markets. In many State~, local-market or market garden areas near larg~ population centers were excluded from these estimates. These omissions make the series less complete than the series in many States. The term i'fresh market l ' has a dual meaning when it is used in describing vegetable estimates. In a strict sense, it applies to the fresh-market propo~tion of a group'of crops which also have a long history as proc~ssing vegeta~ bles. This group includes asparagus, snap beans, green I ima beans, beets, cabbage for kraut, sweet corn, cucumbers for pickles, green peas, spinach, and tomatoes. The Board publ ishes se~rate estimates of acreage, production, and vaiue for the quantities of these vegetables grown for sale to commercial processors. The term IIfresh market ll also describes a group of vegetables and melons which were formerly grown exclusively for sale to consumers in fresh form. In recent years, various quantities of crops such as artichokes, broccol i, brussels sprouts, carrots, caul iflower, celery, garl ie, kale, onions, and greer peppers have been used for processing, and this production is included in the Department's IIFresh Market" estimates. These commodities are not in cluded in the Board's estimates of processing vegeta~les because it is not practical to determine processors' purchases until the end of the harvest sea son. Since such a large proportion of these vegetables is purchased on the open market, it is more practical to estimate total production in advance of and during the harvest season. Marketing seasons for in4ividual crops overlap, and weather frequently disturbs normal harvesting schedules. ConsEquently, the classifications employed are frequently less precise than the dates indicate. In this publication, the volume of vegetables sold for fresh market use is valued at F.O.R. shipping point, except garlic, for which value per unit is reported an.nually on a field run basis at the packinghouse door. The volume sold for processing is valued at the processing plant door--le., "Equivalent returns at packinghouse door." For vegetables sold both for fresh consumption and for processing, total value is the sum of the values for both typea of use. Per unit value is the quotient derived by dividing total value by total quantity. "Per unit value" is not in general a "price" and is not typically used for parity purposes, except where one or the other type of utilization is negligible. Except for late summer onions and New York cabbage, production items relate to production of value. "Acreage for harvest" in this summary embraces total acreage available for harvest, including mature acreage abandoned or only partially harvested because of low prices,' shortage of farm labor, and other economic factors. Ple.nted acreage in this report includes, in addj.':ion to acreage for harvest, acreage lost or abandoned due to natural causes and acreage abandoned prior to reaching maturity because of economic conditions. Acreage lost and replanted to the same crop early enough to be harvested in the season for which it was originally intended is counted only once. Acreage lost and replanted to the same crop for harvest in a later season is considered to have been planted in both seasonal classifications but is included as acreage for harvest in the second season only. Acreage lost and replanted to another vegetable crop is included as planted acreage in estimates for both crops but as acreage harvested for the second crop only. Estimates of both planted and harvested acreage published for asparagus and trawberries include only bearing acreage and exclude nonbearing acreage planted for harvest in future marketing seasons. is for the crop year and does not correspond to calendar year income. Estimates contained in this publication are based primarily on information and data secured by State Agricultural Statisticians from thousands of growers and others associated with the production and marketing of vegetables and related crops. Data secured from other public a5encies on the acreage, movement, and sale of these crops are also used. At 5-year intervals, the Bureau of the Census takes its Census of Agriculture. and these data are considered in establishing acreage levels in Census YRars. Estimates for have recently been reviewed using Census acreage data and other material 'which has become available since the original estimates were prepared, and revisions of individual estimates have been made where necessary. Detailed estimates of acreage, production, and value of 27 crops grown in principal producing States, shown on succeeding pages and included in the regular reports issued by the Department, provide basic statistics for about 85 percent of the national commercial production of vegetables and melons grown primarily for fresh market sale.
