4 PRICES RECEIVED BY FARMERS Fruits and Nuts, This publication presents season average price and equivalent return estimates for citrus and noncitrus fruits, and nuts, by utilization, for the crop years , and in the appendix selected items for ; and price and value estimates for selected crops for Hawaii, Updates: Fruit and Nut Prices, , dated October Supersedes: Selected data in Apple and Pear Prices, Statistical Bulletin No. 253 dated June 1959 are superseded by data in this bulletin. The price and equivalent return estimates for the United States, Washington, Oregon, California, and a few other States for the years are changed from that published in No For explanation see the section on apples and pears. Source of Data In the commercial fruit areas, most of the basic data are furnished by large handlers such as marketing associations, processors, and packing houses. In areas where production or sales of fruit and nuts are of relatively minor importance and where fruit is sold largely or entirely for fresh consumption, principal sources of information are the growers and local buyers. Wholesale, auction market, and f.o.b. shipping point prices have also been utilized where such information is available. Definition of Terms In the following tables price data, unless otherwise noted, are the average prices farmers receive for their products on a local market basis, at the point of first sale commonly referred to as the "average price as sold." For example, if in a given State half of the fruit is sold f.o.b. packed by the growers, one-fourth sold as bulk fruit at the packinghouse door, and one-fourth sold retail or at roadside stands, then the "average price as sold" is a weighted average of the prices applicable to the three positions. The average price of fruit sold for processing usually applies to bulk fruit at the processing plant door, as most fruit sold directly by the grower for processing changes ownership at this point. For some States, notably the Pacific Coast, prices for some fruits are expressed as "equivalent returns." In Washington and Oregon the pricing point for many fruits is the packinghouse door since that is the common basis upon which settlement is made with the grower. Actual prices are adjusted to reflect returns at the packinghouse door. For example, the f.o.b. packed price is adjusted to the incoming packinghousedoorby subtracting all costs such as grading, packing, packing material, inspection fees, selling, and other costs that accumulate between the incoming packinghouse door and f.o.b. the local shipping point, graded and packed. In California, the equivalent return for bulk fruit at the first delivery point refers to an average return for picked fruit at the orchard, at a roadside delivery point, or delivered to the packinghouse door. This is reasonably comparable with the packinghouse-door return in Washington and Oregon. Equivalent on-tree returns are derived by subtractingfromthe equivalent packinghouse-door returns the costs of picking and hauling fruit to the packing house. Final returns paid to growers by cooperatives are included for the most part in the revised price estimate for the crop year to which the returns relate even though such payment may not have been determined until after the close of the marketing season. For grapes in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Arkansas, Missouri, Washington, and Oregon, an important part of the payment is in the form of certificates allocated on the basis of fruit delivered. For these States the grape price includes the cash market value of the certificates at the time of issue rather than the face value of such certificates. The season average price for the United States is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities sold, unless otherwise noted. Citrus Fruits The "as sold" price series for citrus fruits was discontinued beginning with the crop. The "as sold" series is omitted in this bulletin, but is available upon request. This report presents the equivalent packinghouse-door returns used to evaluate production and sales, and - 4 -
5 the equivalent on-tree returns used in parity price calculations. Citrus returns are on a per box basis with the net weight per box as follows: Oranges: Grapefruit: Lemons: Limes: Tangelos: Net Weight per Box Florida, Texas, and Louisiana..... California and Arizona Florida and Texas California Desert Valleys and Arizona Other California areas California and Arizona Florida Florida pounds 1./75 pounds 80 pounds 1/64 pounds 1/67 pounds 1./76 pounds 80 pounds 90 pounds Tangerines: Florida pounds 1/ Net weights for California and Arizona reflect the shift from the two compartment wooden box to the cardboard carton. These weights were used in this publication to convert boxes to tons beginning with the crop. Prior to 1954, the following net weights were used: Oranges in California and Arizona--77 pounds; grapefruit in California Desert Valleys and Arizona--65 pounds; grapefruit in other California areas --68 pounds; and lemons in California and Ari~ona--79 pounds. Apples and Pears The price and equivalent return estimates in this report for the period are on the basis of the full bushel equivalent net weight of 48 pounds for apples, 48 pounds for California pears, and 50 pounds for pears in other States. Historically, the terms box and bushel have been used interchangeably, even though the approximate net weight of the western apple box was 44 pounds and the pear box, 46 pounds, compared with the full bushel equivalent weight described above. In recent years, with increased importance of paper cartons (boxes) and various fillers, the average net weight per box has been dropping. To maintain comparability from year to year the data for were converted to an equivalent standard weight unit--the full bushel. Changes in the net weight per box were of less importance before 1949 and no changes were made in the period. As a result of revising to a full bushel equivalent beginning with the 1949 crop, prices in this bulletin supersede the estimates contained in the Apple and Pear Price Bulletin No. 253, published in June Cranberries The estimates for the period have been changed to reflect equivalent returns at the first receiving station, rather than the "as sold" basis shown for the period. In the re- ' vised series, the f.o.b, packed price is adjusted tp the incoming first receiving station by subtracting all intervening costs. Hops Although included in the bulletin, hop prices are omitted here. lished in the Field Production, Price and Value reports. These data are pub- Other Commodities Some detailed statistics no longer required by industry or governmental agencies have been discontinued during the period. Such data have been omitted from this bulletin but are available upon request. Unpublished Processing Prices For some States in certain years the price for one processing category may not be published, or may be combined with the price of another processing category in order to avoid disclosing individual operations. Prepared by Florence E. Moore under the general direction of B. R. Stauber and R. J. Schrimper from reports submitted by field statisticians of the Statistical Reporting Service and from other available data
