Topics include real numbers, single and multivariable functions, matrix algebra, multivariate calculus, convex analysis, and constrained and unconstrained optimization. Examples of economic analysis using these mathematical tools will be included. Exclusions: MATH 101, MATH 104 Prerequisite: MATH 001; or MATH 005 and MATH 051; or MATH 006; or Grade D or above in AL Applied Mathematics/Pure Mathematics ECON 150 Big Problems in Economics: Issues, Ideas, and Principles [3-1-0:4] The course introduces students to some of the economic principles that have proven to be powerful tools for analyzing real-world problems. A wide range of the most pressing issues of our times will be identified and discussed. The necessary framework for analyzing them will be developed. The course is especially suitable for the concerned non-business citizen-student who wants to fulfill general education requirements. No prior background in economics is required. ECON 191 Honors Microeconomics [3-1-0:4] Application of economic theory to important real-world problems; discussions of methodology and current controversies. Exclusions: ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 198, ECON 200, SOSC 144, AL Business and Economics Prerequisite: B or above in HKAL Economics ECON 198 Microeconomic Theory I [3-1-0:4] The course presents a detailed study of basic topics in microeconomics with a special emphasis on using a rigorous analytical and mathematical approach. The topics include demand theory, uncertainty, asymmetric information, general equilibrium, welfare economics, externality, and public good. Multivariate calculus will be extensively used. Exclusively for students of the BSc in Economics and Finance program. Exclusions: ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191, ECON 213, ECON 214, SOSC 144 Prerequisite: ECON 150 or grade C or above in HKAL Economics ECON 199 Macroeconomic Theory I [3-1-0:4] This course will concentrate on introducing the basics terms of macroeconomics, business cycle analysis, money and inflation, current accounts, and exchange rates. Exclusively for students of the BSc in Economics and Finance program. Exclusions: ECON 112, ECON 215, ECON 216, SOSC 102I, SOSC 144 ECON 200 Microeconomic Theory II [3-1-0:4] This is the second course in the microeconomics sequence offered exclusively to the students of BSc in Economics and Finance program. Topics include production theory, firms behavior under different market structures (perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly), factor demand, and game theory. Emphases are placed on a rigorous analytical and mathematical approach, and multivariate calculus will be used extensively. Exclusions: ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191, ECON 213, ECON 214, SOSC 144 Prerequisite: ECON 198 ECON 201 Macroeconomic Theory II [3-1-0:4] This course will focus on long-term economic growth and structural change, theoretical elements of intertemporal macroeconomics, government budgets and deficits. 3 ECON 214 Managerial Microeconomics [3-1-0:4] Demand estimation, business and economic forecasting; production, innovation and cost; market structure, strategic behavior and pricing; decision making under uncertainty; government regulation of business activities; case studies. Exclusions: ECON 198, ECON 200, ECON 213 Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111 or ECON 191 ECON 215 Intermediate Macroeconomics [3-1-0:4] Inflation, unemployment, national income, and business cycles; consumption, investment, and growth; money and interest rate; interactions among various sectors of the macroeconomy; critical evaluation of different approaches to macroeconomic analysis. Exclusions: ECON 199, ECON 201, ECON 216 Prerequisite: ECON 112 ECON 216 Managerial Macroeconomics [3-1-0:4] This course begins with a critical review of the standard models studied in introductory macroeconomics courses, highlighting their limitations and applicability. In the process, we emphasize the role of expectations and the intertemporal decisions faced by governments, consumers and firms. Building on this foundation, we analyze a host of international macroeconomic and financial issues, including monetary and fiscal policies, exchange rate determination, financial crises, currency risks and their implications for corporate decision-making. Exclusions: ECON 199, ECON 201, ECON 215 Prerequisite: ECON 112 ECON 233 Introduction to Econometrics [3-1-0:4] Topics on the use of statistical regression techniques in modeling and estimating economic and business relationships. Both theoretical and applied aspects are addressed. Prerequisite: One of ISMT 111, MATH 243 or MATH 244 ECON 311 Industrial Organization and Competitive Strategy [3-1-0:4] Market structures and their implications for industry performance and strategic decisionmaking by firms; entry deterrence, advertising, R&D investments; horizontal and vertical integration, strategic alliances, joint ventures and multi-market interaction. Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191 or ECON 198 ECON 313 The Economics of Organization and Management [3-1-0:4] Internal organization of the firm; theory of contracts and the principal-agent problem; incentive and monitoring schemes; intra-firm cooperation, coordination and conflict; centralized and decentralized corporate structures; case studies. Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191 or ECON 198 ECON 314 Economics of Hi-Tech Industries [3-1-0:4] [Previous Course Code: ECON 399W] This course uses tools developed in industrial organization to investigate several interesting aspects of hi-tech industries, such as strategic tying, access fee, two-sided markets, copy protection, and compatibility. Topics include monopoly pricing, price discrimination, product differentiation, barriers to entry, network externalities, search and first-mover advantages, and e-industries. Exclusion: ECON 399X Prerequisite: One of ECON 198, ECON 213 or ECON 214 ECON 320 China s Economic Development and Reform [3-1-0:4] This course provides a theoretical framework for analyzing the problems faced by China during her reform and development process and for exploring the implications of China s ascendence for the business community. Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191 or ECON 198 ECON 323 Labor Economics and Human Resources [3-1-0:4] Occupational choice; labor market analysis and determination of earnings; unions and collective bargaining; employment and job turnover; family, fertility and population issues; training, health, and human capital. Prerequisite: One of ECON 198, ECON 213 or ECON 214 ECON 324 Economics of Human Behavior [3-1-0:4] This course applies economic principles to understand various aspects of human behavior once considered outside the realm of economics. Possible topics include irrationality, crime, marriage, and altruism. Both theoretical and empirical analyses are emphasized. Prerequisite: One of ECON 198, ECON 213 or ECON 214 ECON 325 Law and Economics [3-1-0:4] The economic approach to law; externalities, transaction costs, and the Coase Theorem ; the problem of the commons; the social cost of crime and law enforcement; case studies. Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191 or ECON 198 ECON 330 Time Series Econometrics and Business Forecasting [3-1-0:4] The use of time series data for business forecasting is examined using the methods of regression analysis, exponential and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) techniques. Prerequisite: One of ECON 198, ECON 213 or ECON 214 ECON 333 Money and Banking [3-1-0:4] Theories of money supply and demand; role of money in business fluctuations, inflation, and growth; banking, financial intermediation, and money supply; targets and instruments of monetary policy; rules versus discretion. Prerequisite: ECON 112 or ECON 199 ECON 335 International Trade and Finance [3-1-0:4] Real and monetary aspects of the international economy; basis for trade and investment; tariff and non-tariff trade barriers; trade and industrial policies; international monetary systems and the mechanisms of adjustment. Exclusion: ECON 338 Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191 or ECON 198 ECON 338 Globalization: Trade, Investment and Exchange Rate [3-1-0:4] Why globalization? Is it good or bad? This course provides students with economic frameworks to analyze and understand globalization. Topics include international trade, foreign direct investment, multinationals, exchange rates, regional trade agreements, WTO, IMF and the World Bank. There are regional case studies on Asian economies, with focus on China and Hong Kong. Exclusion: ECON 335 Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111 or ECON 191 ECON 343 Economic Development and Growth [3-1-0:4] Theories of externally and internally induced growth: roles of population, human and physical capital, international trade and investment, technology, and government policies; demographic and economic transition; comparison of development strategies. Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191 or ECON 198 ECON 347 Hong Kong s Economy [3-1-0:4] Hong Kong s post-war economic performance and prospects for further growth and development; analyses of key sectors; income and wealth distributions; Hong Kong, South China, and strategies for economic upgrading. Prerequisite: One of ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191 or ECON 198 ECON 360 Game Theory and Economic Application [3-1-0:4] The course will introduce to students the basic concepts of game theory and its applications to business. The main feature is to pair theory with detailed case studies to explore the use and limits of game theory as a tool for business strategists. Exclusions: MATH 310, SOSC 141 Prerequisites: ECON 233; and one of ECON 110, ECON 111, ECON 191 or ECON 198 ECON 366 Economic Research Project [2-4 credits] In this course, students apply their economics knowledge to special topics. Under individual faculty supervision, students will learn how to conduct economic research, including literature review, data collection and analysis, modeling, analysis and presentation. Each student must write a research paper. Students must obtain approval from the course instructor for enrolling in the course. ECON 367 Economics Research and Communication [0 credit] For Economics students only. This course is to ensure that students will acquire research and communication skills through producing a research-based term paper. The paper may be one that has been written for ECON 366, or ECON 395, or any other 300-level Economics course that has a term paper requirement. The paper should embody the equivalence of a minimum of two credits of workload if it is written for ECON 366 or ECON 395. A standard at grade C or above must be obtained for the paper. Graded P or F. ECON 395 Independent Study [1-4 credit(s)] For third-year students. Faculty directed independent study. ECON 399 Special Topics in Economics [2-4 credits] For third-year students. Special topics in the current development of theoretical and empirical economics; topics vary with instructor.
5 Postgraduate Courses: ECON 505 Economic Foundations I [2-0-0:2] An examination of microeconomic principles including concepts of supply and demand, elasticities, substitutes vs. complements, perfect vs. imperfect markets, and role of government regulations and their relationship to investment decision making process. Exclusion: ECON 511 ECON 506 Economic Foundations II [2-0-0:2] An examination of macroeconomic principles, including the key components of economic activity, fiscal and monetary policies, international trade, and exchange rates, international financial markets and their role in investment process. Prerequisite: ECON 505 ECON 507 Economic Analysis and Forecasting [2-0-0:2] Analysis of the firm s environment based on forecasts of economic and industrial activity, business cycle, currency forecasting, stabilization policy, and time-series forecasting. Prerequisite: ISMT 552 ECON 510 Mathematics for Business and Economics [3-0-0:3] Application of mathematics to economic and business analysis; mathematical analysis and linear algebra; optimization methods. For SBM students only. Graded P or F. ECON 511 Managerial Microeconomics [2-0-0:2] Demand analysis and estimation; cost analysis; market structure, strategic behavior and interaction; pricing decisions: asymetric information; special topics in managerial economics; case studies. This is a core course for MBA. Exclusions: ECON 505, ECON 513, IMBA 504, MTMC 508 ECON 512 China in the Global Economy [2-0-0:2] This course provides an understanding of macroeconomic accounts, develops an ability to anticipate changes in the macroeconomic environment and economic policy, and introduces tools to evaluate the impact of these changes on the business environment. Exclusion: ECON 611S ECON 513 Microeconomic Analysis [4-0-0:4] Theory of the consumer, theory of the firm; market structures and market equilibrium; information and uncertainty; game theory. Exclusion: ECON 521 ECON 514 Macroeconomic Analysis [4-0-0:4] Stylized facts about the macroeconomy; microfoundations of macroeconomics; dynamic stochastic models as tools to understand inflation, unemployment, business cycles and growth; fiscal and monetary policies. Prerequisite: ECON 511 or ECON 513 ECON 517 China's Foreign Trade and Investment I [2-0-0:2] [Previous Course Code: ECON 515A] Topics include China in the world economy; evolution of China's foreign trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), impacts of China's foreign trade and FDI; MNE's entry models and entry strategies in Chinese market, and opportunities and challenges of foreign trade and FDI in China. Exclusions: ECON 515A, ECON 515B ECON 519 Economics of Hi-Tech Industries I [2-0-0:2] [Previous Course Code: ECON 611O] This course covers the fundamental economic principles that underlie the emerging information economy and high tech industries, such as information, goods pricing, network effects, standard wars, and policy on intellectual property rights. Examples from the computing, telecommunications, and other industries will be used to illustrate the above economic principles. Exclusions: ECMT 510, MTMC 505 ECON 520 Global Macroeconomics [2-0-0:2] [Previous Course Code: ECON 611N] This course covers the basic theory of short run macroeconomics, as it has developed since Keynes. The basic framework will be the IS-LM equilibrium method, in which we analyze the major markets which affect the macroeconomy labor, output, money and foreign exchange markets by studying positions of general equilibrium in them. This framework will be used to analyze fiscal and monetary policies. This course will develop several economic models and cover several additional industries. The course is both tool-oriented and issue-oriented. The Chinese experience of reform of the past two decades will be frequently discussed during the course. Prerequisite: ECON 521 ECON 551 Industrial Organizations [4-0-0:4] [Previous Course Code: ECON 611C] This course uses tools developed in the studies of industrial organization to understand several interesting aspects of industries such as price discrimination, two-sided market, network externalities, vertical relations and consumer research. Prerequisite: ECON 521 ECON 552 International Finance and Open-Economy [4-0-0:4] Macroeconomics [Previous Course Code: ECON 611E] Current research topics in international finance and open-economy macroeconomics, including international risk sharing and portfolio choice, the theory and evidence of real/nominal exchange rate determination, risk and return in the foreign exchange market, and financial and currency crises. Prerequisites: ECON 521 and ECON 525 ECON 575 Advanced Econometrics I [4-0-0:4] Nonlinear regression methods, asymptotic distribution theory, time series analysis, discrete and limited dependent variables, Bayesian inference in econometrics.
