3 HEAVY EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN PRE-EMPLOYMENT School of Trades Applied Science & Management Division HEAVY EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The objective of the Heavy Equipment Technician Pre-Employment Program is to provide students with: - Theoretical trade knowledge which, together with hands-on shop experience, will enable students to go on to train for employment as capable and knowledgeable apprentices and entry-level workers in the trade - Good on-the-job safety skills and awareness - The ability to apply mathematical concepts to the heavy equipment field DURATION: This 18-week program consists of 13 courses delivered as per the current schedule. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Grade 12 Academic - High School Graduation with English 12 and MA 11 or AMA 11 OR Mature Student Status with acceptable scores on the College Placement Test and/or GED OR Adult Basic Education - Level III OR Acceptable scores on the appropriate Apprenticeship Preparation Exam NOTE: Students will be expected to complete recommended and scheduled Math 060 material by the end of Level III. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of all modules within the program, with an average of 70%. Heavy Equipment Technician Pre-Employment
4 LEARNING OUTCOMES & OBJECTIVES: - Demonstrate competencies in job safety skills and awareness of workplace hazards - Acquire skills and knowledge to make a successful transition to an entrylevel position in the work force - Complete theoretical requirements for Level 1 of the Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship - Provide an opportunity to challenge the Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship Level 1 exam - Demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical concepts to the Heavy Equipment Technician field. COURSE WORK OUTLINE: FA 003 First Aid and CPR HET 100 Industrial Safety HET 101 Hydraulics HET 102 Shop & Power Tool Orientation HET 103 Steering and Suspension HET 104 Brakes I Hydraulic and Electric HET 105 Brakes II Air HET 106 Electricity and Electronics HET 107 Trailer Systems HET 108 Safe Use of Oxyacetylene RIGG 001 Rigging & Hoisting TDG 001 Transportation of Dangerous Goods WHMS 001 Workplace Hazard Material Information Systems INSTRUCTOR CREDENTIALS & EXPERIENCE: A journeyperson with relevant, current experience in heavy equipment mechanical, training and experience in instruction and adult education. UPON COMPLETION: Upon successful completion of all courses within this Program, graduates receive a Yukon College certificate of completion. Students will also be offered the opportunity to challenge the Alberta Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship Level I (first year) exam. Heavy Equipment Technician Pre-Employment
5 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Note: The following course hours represent the total theory and practical hours combined. Hours may vary slightly because of the availability of practical work projects. FA 003 FIRST AID / CPR 16 hours/ 0 credits This course introduces the fundamentals of administering First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation for job site injuries. Topics include: basic anatomy and physiology, artificial respiration, treatment for: choking, wounds, bleeding, shock, unconsciousness, fractures, head, joint, spinal, chest, hand and eye injuries, casualty management, burns, poisoning, heart attack and stroke, as well as the administration of CPR. Successful completion of the course results in certification in Standard First Aid, and Heart-Saver CPR. HET 100 INDUSTRIAL SAFETY 18 hours/1 credit This course introduces the fundamentals of safety on the job site. Topics include: good work habits, worksite hazards, protective equipment, fire safety, transport of equipment and supplies, dangerous goods, Occupational Health and Safety regulations, and roles and responsibilities of employers and employees. The theory presented in this course represents regulations and principles enforced in the program and on job sites. HET 101 HYDRAULICS 60 hours/2 credits This course introduces the student to common hydraulic systems. Topics include hydraulic theory; principles and operation of hydraulic theory; principles and operation of hydraulic components; conventional hydraulic circuits; hydraulicrelated safety procedures; scheduled maintenance of hydraulic systems; and component repair and testing. HET 102 SHOP & POWER TOOL ORIENTATION 60 hours/2 credits This course introduces the student to the effectiveness of good shop practices as well as use and care of shop tools and equipment. Topics include safety; hand and power tools, cutting and non-cutting; twist drills and reamers; taps and dies; fasteners; and bearings and seals. HET 103 STEERING AND SUSPENSION 60 hours/2 credits This course introduces students to the suspension and steering systems used in most wheeled on-highway and off-highway equipment. Topics include steering system components; frames; steering and frame alignment; wheels and tires; suspension systems; and fifth wheels. Students will have the opportunity to perform common maintenance and repair procedures. HET 104 BRAKES I HYDRAULIC AND ELECTRIC 54 hours/2 credits This course introduces the student to hydraulic and air braking systems. Topics include principles of hydraulic braking systems; hydraulic drum brake components and related service procedures; hydraulic disk brake components Heavy Equipment Technician Pre-Employment
6 and service; hydraulic Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS); electric brake systems; and the related service procedures. Shop activities in this course include hydraulic drum and disc brake system overhauls; wheel bearing adjustment; drum-type air brake system foundation brake overhauls; and road-worthiness. HET 105 BRAKES II - AIR 60 hours/2 credits This course is designed to give students the knowledge and skills to operate equipment fitted with air brake systems and to maintain that system in a safe operating condition. Students will learn the principles of air brakes, the operating principles of the various components and valves, correct maintenance and trouble shooting procedures and the correct adjustment procedures for the components. Graduates of the course will be able to write the government examination, which may lead to an air brake endorsement on their driver s license. The course follows the format and subject matter that is approved by the government motor vehicle branch. Subjects covered include: the 121 brake system; air brake principles; compressors and associated equipment; compressed air reservoirs and associated components; controls as used on single axle vehicles and truck/trailer combinations; testing and repair of various types of valves in the air brake system; air chambers and the dangers associated with the repair and maintenance of them; adjustments to slack adjusters; inspection and maintenance of brake shoes; linings, drums, etc and regulations pertaining to the use and maintenance of air brake systems and their components. HET 106 ELECTRICITY AND ELECTRONICS 90 hours/3 credits This course introduces the student to one of the most common elements of heavy equipment; electrical systems. Topics include fundamentals of electricity; basic electrical circuits; and introduction to electrical test equipment; storage battery theory, operation, and service; fundamentals of electromagnetism; engine starting system components; and service procedures; and safety around electrical systems. This course explores other electrical systems, and introduces the students to electronic systems; basic electronic circuits and components; the application of electronic devices to heavy equipment; charging system theory, components, and services procedures; and safety around electrical systems. Shop activities include electrical circuit diagnosis, battery service, electronic circuit construction and diagnosis; and charging circuit diagnosis and repair. HET 107 TRAILER SYSTEMS 30 hours/1 credit This course introduces the student common trailers, coupling units, trailer configurations, axle configurations, and various types of landing gear. The student will service a fifth wheel assembly and recognize conditions cased by excessive wear or corrosion. Safety procedures and inspections while coupling and uncoupling trailer systems will also be emphasized in this course. HET 108 SAFE USE OF OXYACETYLENE 30 hours/1 credit This course introduces students to procedures for handling oxyacetylene equipment including cylinders, regulators, hoses and torches. Topics include setting up equipment, pressure and flame adjustments, welding and cutting Heavy Equipment Technician Pre-Employment
7 gases, filler rods and fluxes, manual and semi-automatic cutting, brazing, metal identification and lab practice. Further practice and proficiency using these tools occurs in other courses. RIGG 001 RIGGING AND HOISTING 18 hours/0 credits In this 18-hour course students will learn to identify different types of rope, their uses, proper storage and various knots, bends and hitches. They will also examine the following safe methods of lifting heavy loads with cranes and hoists; wire rope; rigging hardware and equipment; proper selection of rope, chains and slings, tag lines; WCB regulation; hand signals to direct crane operators. Steeltoed boots required. TDG 001 TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS 4.5 hours/0 credits The purpose of this course is to protect the public when dangerous goods are transported. This course is designed to fulfill the training requirements of the legislation, which requires that all persons involved in the transportation of these materials be trained. Topics covered include classification, safety, identifiers, documentation and reporting. Upon completion, a TDG certificate will be issued. WHMIS 001 WORKPLACE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INFORMATION SYSTEMS 3.5 hours/0 credits This course is designed to provide information about materials found and used in the workplace. It will provide training as specified under the Act and Regulations and will cover the following topics: responsibilities of suppliers, importers, distributors, employees and employers, reading and understanding labels, identifiers, material safety and data sheets, safe use, storage and disposal of controlled substances and emergency procedures in case of accident.
