GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 1 Gold Wing Road Riders Association Chapter NH-G Laconia, NH THE LAKES REGION WINGS November 2015 Here we are with the last Chapter G Gathering of the year coming up and the Holidays fast approaching. I think that Chapter G experienced a complete success this year. We got some new members, we have money in the check book, and participation on Chapter rides was way up over the year before. Our 27th Year From the Chapter Director We added to the staff with the addition of a Ride Coordinator, John Sheehan, but we also added an Assistant Chapter Director, Carole Sheehan. There was a big increase this year in participation with our other sister GWRRA Chapters in New Hampshire. That being said, NH-G Stole the NH/VT flag beating out NH-A at the NH-E Chapter Gathering on October 31 st. Here you see our own Chapter NH-G Goodwill Ambassador, Charlie Collins, doing the honors in accepting the flag from Chapter NH-A Director, Scarecrow.I mean Ron Black. Following NH-E s Gathering, Frank Clayton from Chapter NH-A lead a Polar Ride ending up in Center Harbor for lunch. On that ride were Charlie Collins, Carole & John Sheehan, from NH-G, and Ron & Suzie Black, Directors from NH-E. The Chapter Holiday Party is coming up on Thursday December 10 th at the Greenside where we hold our regular Chapter Gatherings. I have the menu and it will be published elsewhere in this newsletter. Like last year, we will ask you to give us your order in advance to help the Greenside better prepare for us. This year, the Chapter will be providing appetizers for the pre-dinner gathering. Time to meet at the Greenside will be at 6PM. Also like last year, there will be a gift exchange for those that want to participate, as well as the announcement of the 2016 Chapter NH-G Couple of the Year! This month, after the Gathering, we will have the last Chapter ride of the Season, weather permitting. The ride will end around 3 PM so that you can all get home before dark now that daylight savings time has ended. I haven t got a destination yet, but we will discuss it at the gathering. See you on the 8 th at the Greenside! Mike Vaillancourt Chapter G Director

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 3 Rewind The October NH-G Gathering was held at the Greenside in Tilton on October 11 th with 17 in attendance. I brought up the Laconia Christmas Parade again this year to see if anyone would be interested in being in that parade. There was no interest. However, Beryl Reid brought up an excellent idea about having a table at the Pumpkin Festival in Laconia on October 24 th. I really liked that idea, but upon calling the Chamber of Commerce to inquire, we had already missed the cut-off date. With that being said, if the festival is held in Laconia in 2016, Chapter NH-G will set up a table with a Goldwing bike and a trike on display to get some exposer in the public eye. I will contact GWRRA to get a case of Gold Wing Magazines and other giveaways. Good Job Beryl! Even though Assistant Chapter Director Carole Sheehan was not at the October Gathering, I announced that I would be stepping down as Chapter Director at the end of That being said, I also announced that Carole would be doing the Chapter Gatherings once a quarter to get into practice. NH/VT District Director Ed Heath spoke about the 2016 New England States Rally in the Upper Valley to be held in Lebanon, New Hampshire in July. Ed handed out a limited supply of rally flyers and if you didn t get one, fear not, it is published further on in this newsletter. Chapter Educator Bob Reid spoke about winter maintenance to put your bike to bed for the winter, and also spoke about the importance of dressing for the conditions to prevent hyperthermia. We spoke about the Greenside being closed for our January and February Gatherings, so I volunteered to have the January Gathering at my home in Canterbury, and Bob & Beryl Reid also volunteered to do the February Gathering again at their home in Alexandria. Following the Chapter Gathering, a follow-your-nose ride was lead by Mike Vaillancourt out through western NH up to Hanover NH, then over the bridge into Vermont, and down US 5 along the Connecticut river valley down to Bellows Falls where the group stopped for lunch and also got to see the Town Safety Parade with all sorts of Fire Trucks and Ambulances. Also on that ride was Charlie Collins, Bob & Beryl Reid, and Bev & Roger Kindred. The ride ended up at the Beech Hill Farm in Hopkinton for Ice Cream. You would never have guessed it, but Charlie Collins was leading the pack up the hill to get in line for ice cream first. He let his sweet tooth get the best of him. This ride was suggested by Bev & Roger Kindred. I always say, the best rides are those suggested by our own Chapter Members. The 50/50 was won by Beryl Reid in the amount of $ That s all for this month.. Mike Vaillancourt

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 4 From the Assistant Chapter Director October was a Great Month to Ride so the Sheehan Adventures Continued! In addition to attending many GWRRA rides this fall John and I went on a last minute trip for six days with Ron & Susie Black from NH-E. The entire trip was on back roads and VT100 was just amazing. We departed on Friday, October 9 th in the pouring rain to Jaffery where we met up with the Blacks at their house. We continued on to Killington, VT after a dinner stop at Sam s Steak House in Ludlow VT. We took the back roads to avoid the holiday traffic and trucks. Lake George, NY. It was our shortest mileage day but it was great to have some time to sit by the lake and relax before we walked to dinner. Tuesday we headed back to VT. And stopped for breakfast at the Rooster Café. It is really small but the food was great and Susie sat on a chair that has a nest with eggs painted on it. The waitress told her she couldn t leave until she hatched the eggs. Unfortunately I guess Susie did not generate enough heat and we finally had to leave. On Saturday morning we had a great breakfast at Sugar & Spice and then met up with VT-A at the Rutland Home Depot for a ride to Smugglers Notch. The views amazing and we saw some incredible foliage event though they were not at peak yet. We had lunch in Jefferson Village at a great little town restaurant. We had dinner a nice Italian restaurant in Killington. On Sunday we met NY-K (Long Island) members at the Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury, VT. They were excited to meet us. For dinner we tried out the Irish Pub & Restaurant in Killington. The pub was cozy but they had live Irish music was fun to listen to. On Monday we headed over to Lake Placid, NY and then on down to spend the night in We took a ride up Mt. Equinox. It was a little overcast but was a great ride. We met up with a GWRRA member from Florida, which was fun and he was kind enough to take this picture for us. Thanks to a little research before we left and the Maps App on my phone we found our way to several covered bridges and drove through them. Just a fun thing to do and they were in really good shape and easy to ride over.

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 5 We stayed the night at The Big Bear Lodge in W. Dover VT., which is family owned by some lovely folks from England. The rooms included a complementary breakfast, which was very delicious and relaxing as we were the only guests at the lodge. The owner joined us for breakfast and we talked about his life and experiences and how he came to be a dodge owner in VT. (He would love to host GWRRA members anytime and would give offer a rate of $95/night with breakfast included.) Wednesday, our last day, came and it was such a beautiful day none of us wanted the trip to end so we took the long way home via Mt. Greylock, the Mohawk Trail, lunch at the Golden Eagle Restaurant in Clarksburg and back to NH with an ice cream stop at Charlie s Olde Tyme Creamery. What could have been a 4-hour ride home took 9-½ but it was well worth it! Everywhere we stopped that we really liked we asked about discounts for GWRRA events and folks are really open to hosting GWRRA if we re in the area. This is what makes GWRRA so great - the opportunity to have a fantastic experience of riding and meeting other members from NH, VT and NY! Ride Safe and Have Fun! Carole Sheehan Due to popular demand, WING DING 38 has been moved back by one day to a Wednesday through Saturday pattern! The NEW DATES are AUGUST 31 - SEPTEMBER 3, We appreciate all the feedback and hope this makes for more convenient travel time. We look forward to seeing you in Billings! Be sure to visit our website for info on how to book your room and to get registered for the event! You won't want to miss this great event in BIG SKY COUNTRY! WING DING 38

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 6 Welcome to GWRRA Rider Education Bob Reid Chapter G Educator Putting Your Wing Away for the Season We will be taking the last ride of the season in New England this weekend. Beryl & I are heading to Phoenix to visit our daughter who just moved there and if we are lucky we ll get in some riding there (we plan on visiting GWRRA Headquarter while we are there). We won t be at the November meeting to bid farewell to all our Snowbird friends. Hope you all have a wonderful winter and don t miss us too much as we are braving the elements. I thought I would repost a previous article because I refer to this information every year and I thought it would be easier if you didn t have to go searching for it. These tips were taken from the website ultimatemotorcycling.com and was written by Ron Lieback. Some of the steps do not pertain to us wingers, i.e chain lubrication, etc. but all in all it covers everything. 11 TIPS FOR WINTER MOTORCYCLE STORAGE: Also, when changing brake and clutch fluid, I bleed two full reservoirs before topping it off. This makes sure all the old, nasty fluid is out. And remember to use correct coolant; if your bike is stored in extremely cold temperatures, radiators/lines can bust, ruining not only the riding season, but spraying corrosive material all over your soon-to-be clean motorcycle. On the subject of fluids, if the bike is going to be in storage for more than four months, it s not a bad idea to remove the spark plugs and spray the inside of the cylinder walls with oil. Remember to also bump the ignition to spread the oil on the cylinder walls for preservation. Throughout my years of riding, I ve never encountered any mechanical breakdowns, and I continue to beat my engines daily. I blame this on normal maintenance, and using fresh fluids ahead of storage. 1. Go for a Long Ride: It s the last time you will this season. Make it fun, even if it means being a hooligan (safe and within the law, of course ). 2. Fresh Fluids (Oil, Clutch, Brake, Coolant): Many of riders don t follow this, but I do. I change all fluids oil (with filter), clutch, brake and coolant before every winter storage. And this all depends on how long ago you ve changed your fluids. Example: If it s been a month and a few hundred miles after a clutch/brake fluid change, I would only change the oil. But for most, this isn t the case. And considering I change my brake and clutch fluid twice a year, this saves a step in the beginning of the riding season. Simply put changing the fluids keeps things fresh. All fluids, especially used oil, contain contaminants from normal operation, quickly becoming a corrosive bath of fluids. This can destroy rubber seals rather quickly. 3. Scrub, Wash, Dry & Wax: Begin with the dirty parts, such as the chain and brakes. I use a grunge brush and an O-ring safe degreaser for the chain, and disc cleaner for the brakes. While cleaning save yourself some steps for the spring season and inspect everything. Next, wash and thoroughly dry the motorcycle, especially if you re doing this before covering it. Water create moisture, and moisture becomes the Beelzebub of problems, causing corrosion and mold. Next, wax or treat the paint however you usually do, and don t forget to treat chrome if it s there. This allows further protection while put away, and also provides a spotless platform to feed your hunger for riding come spring. Some also treat their leather seats and/or other leather items before storage. I respect my seats, and store them inside for the winter. This keeps them fresh for next season. 4. Wax/Lubricate Chain: Besides cleaning and waxing/lubricating your chain

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 7 throughout the season (rule of thumb: every 500 miles for street; 200 miles for adventure/off-road), you can also extend the life of your chain by treating it before storage. As mentioned in Tip #3 above, make sure you clean the chain. And remember to get the chain warm (five miles or so of riding) before lubing/waxing; this allows the lube to dissolve quicker and enter the O-Ring chain for proper lubrication. Then, wipe off all excess wax/lubricant. For those with a final-belt drive, well, forget this step you re lucky. 5. Gas Treatment: For fuel injection systems, I simple fill the tank with fuel, add fuel stabilizer, run it for a few minutes, and shut it off. This allows the stabilizer to get throughout the fuelinjection components. This simple process has worked for over a decade, and every summer when I rip things apart for cleaning the fuel system, all parts have remained relatively gunk free. For carburetors, shut the petcock off and either drain the fuel float bowls, or run engine until its starved for gas. Fill up fuel tank and add stabilizer to keep the inside of the tank moisture-free. This is the reason we top off the tank to keep moisture from building inside, which causes rust. As for the fuel stabilizer, it does just what it says stabilizes fuel so it doesn t go bad. Bad fuel can ruin a motorcycle s induction components quickly. 5. Exhaust Prep: Once the exhaust is clean, I spray a very small amount of WD-40 into the end of the pipes, making sure no excess gets outside of the outlets. The WD stands for Water Displacement, and this helps further protect the inner exhaust/engine from moisture, which can turn into rust. Once this process is complete. I use a plastic bag, such as a grocery bag, to insert into the pipe and then wrap the access around the outside of the pipe, securing it to the tip with a rubber band. This keeps varmints out, which like to nest inside the exhaust during the winter months. 6. Battery Maintenance: Storage charges such as a Battery Tender Junior are cheap nowadays, and can make your battery last for years. My father has the record for longest battery life on his 2002 Heritage Softail Classic eight years. He uses a Battery Tender Junior, and he will try to get nine years out of the same battery next season. Either remove the battery, and keep it on a trickle charger, or insert a pigtail on the battery. I use the pigtail on everything; sometimes we ll test new motorcycles for weeks at a time, and the pigtails on my personal bikes allow for a simple hookup to a trickle charger. 7. Inflate Tires to Correct Pressure: This is simple; if you want your tires to retain their proper shape, inflate them to the correct pressure before storage. Also, if you are storing the bike on the tires, rotate each wheel once a month to prevent flat spots. And grab yourself a good gauge; you d be surprised at how off some cheaper gauges are. 8. Store on Centerstand and/or Stands if Possible: If your bike has a centerstand, use it during storage. If you can get both wheels off the ground, this would provide the most optimal situation for storage. These techniques keep the tires off the ground, preventing the need to rotate to reduce flat spots (though still inflate to proper pressure to retain shape). It also keeps the suspension unloaded, which helps suspension longevity. 9. Use the Correct Cover: Never use plastic to cover your motorcycle during storage; it traps moisture, causing corrosion and mold issues. Many companies make breathable covers that are affordable. And if you re very serious about corrosion, and want to go that extra step, there are innovate covers such as the Zerust Motorcycle Cover I began using last winter. 10. Store in Well-Ventilated Area with No Open Contaminants Present: The most ideal situation is a well-ventilated area anywhere indoors. This keeps air circulating, and no moisture from building up inside the cover. Also, make sure there are no open fertilizers or other chemicals around the bike. If present, these chemicals can speed up corrosion. 11. Forget These Storage Tips: Yep, simply forget these storage tips, and convince the significant other that the bike needs to reside in the living room. If you re one of the few luck ones, this is the most ideal situation for any beloved motorcycle Ride safe.. Bob Reid Chapter G Educator

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 8 Many of us have witnessed on news casts the latest incident of motorcycle versus car wherein the car swerved into a motorcycle causing the motorcycle to crash with injuries to the riders. Of course the story was related with the expected shock and dismay from newscasters regarding the horrific tragedy that occurred. Not one newscaster apparently looked at the total scene as to cause and effect. Perhaps these statements sound trite, however, take a look again if you have it on face book or . I agree the swerving by the vehicle was a deliberate action of which real or perceived reasons may have dictated such an action. However, why was the motorcycle in position to be involved in the accident? Did anyone notice the motorcyclist was passing both on a hill, and a double line, which of course the last two words indicate an illegal pass? The statement(s) on the news indicated the rider decided to pass real or perceived slow traffic. In my estimation, both the motorcyclist and the vehicle driver are/were at fault in this incident. Which leads us to the discussion for this month s newsletter. The decision whether or not to pass any vehicle is the discretion of the vehicle operator given parameters that enforce or would allow said decision. This applies to legal passing zones as well as those marked as no passing. There are certain instances wherein a pass around a slow moving machine may be the right choice, such as farm machinery, highway equipment, truck or truck trailer units given certain safety parameters. Even when having to cross the double yellow lines. The caveat though, we would be making an illegal pass; and if an accident occurred, the person(s) making this pass would be citable by law enforcement. Such an action could also affect insurance coverage if a collision occurred. Lecture over! Guest GWRRA Rider Education PASS/FAIL by Ace (Howie) Peterson Guest Educator CO-Q Passing other vehicles or motorcycles moving slower than our operating speed entails certain safe parameters involving do s and don ts. Do s would include making certain there is adequate space to make the pass on two lane highways, especially with oncoming traffic; having space to move back into the proper lane on two lane highways if the pass gets too tight without impacting other vehicles (causing them to take evasive action); completing proper mirror checks and head turns; accelerating rapidly (do not lollygag); leave enough room for other passing units to come back into the lane safely without impacting traffic; I am sure the reader can visualize other scenarios as well. Also, remember that the discussion above does involve four lane highways as well, the circumstances being very similar. Don ts include passing on the right (two lane highways, streets) which places the motorcycle in a blind spot or into the other vehicles turning radius; don t pass on hills, unless there is adequate sight distance and enough room to accelerate to safely pass (what is over the brow of the hill); passing on curves can be extremely hazardous due to short sight distance, don t presume that a vehicle stopping without signal indicator lit not going to turn into your lane if a pass is attempted; passing long strings of vehicles without adequate time or spacing can again yield hazardous circumstances; and again, there are more to consider. One other caveat regards passing speed. The letter of the law would state that to exceed the posted speed limit while passing is a violation. Thus those high speed passes to get ahead of multiple vehicles could result in an autograph session with a patrol officer. Another form of fail! Passing is all too often determined by the riders (drivers) attitude! Some riders cannot stand to have some vehicle in front of them, impeding the desired rate of speed. And thus look for any opening, no matter how tiny safety wise

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 9 it may be to execute a pass of another vehicle. These situations result in near misses, road rage, plus injuries or fatalities, (fails). All motorcyclists must be conscious of the fact involvement with a larger object will result in a fail. Of course, bikers are all too often willing to roll the dice presuming they made it once, why should this pass attempt be any different? The roll of the dice may end up snake eyes in more ways than one. Having watched the video, and observing the behaviors of other motorcyclists or vehicles, my reason for this article is not to place passing into concrete rules; the laws affecting traffic have already accomplished it. My reasoning is to alert each of us to ride (drive) safely within the guidelines of traffic regulations plus not placing ourselves in the situation to fail thus becoming a statistic. If we as motorcyclists are indeed ln that much of a hurry, we should have chosen other transportation opportunities! Consider all the data before making a pass of another vehicle, and when safe to do so, pass and get on with the journey! If we are not in that much of a hurry, back off, and enjoy the view. Who knows what a person may see around them. And as always, RIDE WITH PRIDE AND CONFIDENCE! 10 GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 10 Until the Chapter gets a Motorist Awareness Coordinator, Nick Hoppner from the Colorado District, will graciously provide us with MAD articles. Editor Squinting Season by Nick Hoppner Colorado (West) Motorist Awareness Coordinator madwest@coloradogwrra.com Remember your junior high school science classes that taught you why summer turns to winter? Here s a refresher: The earth s axis is tilted about 23.5 degrees, so Earth is never straight up and down compared to the sun. When it is summertime in North America, the North Pole and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere are angled toward the sun. The sun appears to stay in the sky longer each day (really, we are just pointed toward the sun for longer each day). Because we spend more time in the sunshine and less in the shadow of night, our daily temperatures get warmer, and the sun is high in the sky. However, in the winter months, the sun is low in the sky, and at a greater angle, seeming to cling lower to the horizon. I was reminded of this a few days ago on a trip to Durango to have my Spyder serviced. I spent Monday night in a local hotel, then got up before dawn on Tuesday to deliver the Spyder to the dealership at 8 a.m. in order to be first in line for service. I squeezed out onto the highway and found myself in morning rush hour traffic on an unfamiliar (to me) stretch of highway, heading southeast directly into the rising sun s glare. It was like riding into a dark tunnel with one huge spotlight coming directly at me. Suddenly I realized a huge dump truck had entered the highway on the lane to my right! I hadn t seen it at all! As a motorcyclist, I had no visor to flip down and block the sun. How many of the motorists around me would know that I was nearly riding blind? Even worse, how many of them were also struggling to see due to the low sun s glare? This got me wondering what can motorists do to cope better with straight-into-the-sun driving? Well, here are some hints: Tip #1: Wear polarized sunglasses Don t think that sunglasses in winter are silly. A good pair of polarized sunglasses are an essential safety tool for any driver year round. They won t give you perfect vision in the glare of the sun, but they are your best first step. Tip #2: Wash your windshield regularly Grime on the inside and outside of your windshield makes the sunlight refract and scatter, which intensifies the glare. Clean glass is easier to see out of whatever the weather conditions, but especially when you are facing sunlight. It is best to clean your windshield before your trip. Using your car s windshield cleaning device during the drive leaves drops of washer fluid on it, which reflect the sun, making it harder to drive until they dry up. Tip #3: Add secondary visors to your sun visor Your car s sun visor can help reduce glare. In addition you can significantly increase its effectiveness with minivisors available at stores that carry auto supplies. Buy an adjustable one that allows you to fill the gap not covered by your main visor. Some are see-through, which help to filter out glare while still allowing the driver to see through them. Since some drivers have trouble getting a good view when using them, it is wise to test them out on short trips to see if they work for you. All visors have shortcomings, providing only limited help in achieving hazard reduction. When you pull the visor down, whether the main one that comes with the car or a mini-visor, you can obscure the road ahead, making it hard to see traffic lights and to get a full view of what is ahead. Don t pull visors so low that you only have a constricted view of what is immediately ahead.

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 11 Tip #4: Avoid clutter on your dashboard Sunlight reflects off items on your dashboard. Anything with a shiny surface, including paper, can add to your trouble seeing well. Store items in the glove compartment or buy a caddy to hold them. Tip #5: Replace a cracked or pitted windshield Cracks and dents can distort your view and cause sunlight to scatter, making it hard to see. Tip #6: Leave ample space between you and the driver ahead Give yourself plenty of room out in traffic. If there is a problem, this extra room can save you from running into the car ahead. Tip #7: Drive slower if you are having trouble seeing Just like you reduce speed in driving rain or snow, go slower when driving into the sun. Tip #8: Try to avoid times when glare is at its worst It can be helpful to leave even 30 minutes earlier or later for your commute to avoid the problems with glare. If you can t, then add extra time to your trip. Rushing when driving with the sun glaring in your eyes is asking for trouble. Tip #9: Know your route Many roads and streets are laid out due East/West or North/South. Get to know your normal routes. Do you frequently encounter morning sun glare headed east or afternoon sun glare headed west? Can you avoid these situations? Or, can you prepare yourself and your vehicle to minimize your problems with glare? Tip #10: Consider the motorcyclists If you re struggling with the sun s glare while perched in the cockpit of your Ford 150 pick em up truck, imagine the challenges be faced by that guy on the Harley. Can he see anything? Is he riding with one hand held up in front of him, trying to block out the glare? How bout giving him a bit more room so you both can get to your destinations safely?
