This 7 hour specialist Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR) and Driver CPC accredited course deals with working at the roadside for breakdown and recovery technicians. 2 Customer Service The course is designed for professional drivers who have a customer facing role and need to improve their customer service skills The Customer Service workshop is designed for passenger vehicle drivers regardless of their experience and covers all areas of customer service. Many drivers today will regularly be in contact with clients of the company and the public at large. It is important that they are aware of the image they portray and have the techniques available to them to deal with people in a professional manner. Conflict and stress management Techniques to deal with and to help avoid conflict and to reduce overall stress in the workplace. 3 Daily Vehicle Checks The course is designed for professional drivers who wish to ensure they are completing the daily vehicle checks correctly and why they are so important. This workshop has been designed to give a deeper understanding of why vehicle checks are needed and the importance of doing them correctly on a daily basis. The session starts with a licence check and introduction to Driver CPC (as applicable). 3.5 hours Vehicle checks and legislation An introduction to vehicle checks, legislation, penalties and the law. The component parts of a vehicle A look at the structure of a vehicle, its component parts and areas that need checking regularly including, oil, water, tyres, lights etc. Daily vehicle checks In depth look at why daily checks need to be done and how to complete them correctly; this will be either in the classroom or practical if a vehicle is available. 4 Depot Safety The course is designed for professional drivers who wish to gain a better understanding of the dangers of working in a depot environment. This workshop has been designed to give a delegate a deeper understanding of the potential dangers associated with working in or around a distribution centre or warehouse. The workshop can be used as a part of a company induction process for new starters. The session starts off with a licence check and introduction to Driver CPC (as applicable). Safe working environments for all This section will explore the importance of taking responsibility for a delegate s personal safety and that of others. The laws and legislation in place for their protection will be also be discussed. Loading bay safety Discussion on the importance of increasing awareness when in the vicinity of these potentially dangerous areas, not only as a driver but as a pedestrian. The dangers of manoeuvring vehicles will be emphasised and loading bay procedures discussed. Shunting procedures This section will discuss the safety aspects associated with being a yard shunter. The correct procedures regarding the movement of trailers or vehicles around a site and picking up and setting down of trailers will be topics of discussion to establish a safe method of working. Traffic Marshal or Banksman The roles and responsibilities associated with being a traffic marshal or Banksman and the use and meaning of their hand signals. Safe loading The need for securing loads to vehicles and the types of fastenings that can be used; use of ropes and sheeting, ratchet straps and chains. Emphasis will be placed on the current legislation regarding a vehicle s load and how it can have an effect on the driver and their employer. Working at heights awareness Delegates will be given information regarding the dangers of working at height. Safe methods of entering and exiting vehicles to minimise trips or falls from height; gaining access to the driving cab and loading bed. PPE personal protective equipment This section will explore why personal protective equipment is important and its role in ensuring drivers and warehouse employees are protected in their daily duties. Manual handling awareness This section is designed to help a delegate approach any manual handling tasks in a clear and methodical way to avoid personal injury. 6 Driving Abroad The course is designed for professional drivers who regularly drive abroad and require specific knowledge of the challenges they will face This workshop has been designed to give an understanding of the challenges they will face when driving professionally abroad. Driving within Europe and beyond involves many challenges including paperwork, cultural differences and the fact that for many drivers they will need to be self-sufficient as they are away from their company base for long periods of time. Route Planning The importance of planning a foreign trip with a commercial/passenger vehicle; ease of access between borders, permits or documentation required and driving time for tachograph legislation will also be topics of discussion. 7 Eco Driving In Vehicle The course is designed for professional drivers who drive larger vehicles for work on a regular basis and how they can improve their driving in an improved fuel efficient manner. Much of this course is based around the SAFED Training Programme as this has proved to be very successful in not only lowering the amount of fuel used over a prolonged period, but also keeping the drivers exposure to risk as low as possible. The course starts with a presentation to set some parameters for the day and to introduce the concept of fuel efficient driving. At the end of the course each driver will have a better understanding of the driving task involved on today s roads, be better equipped to deal with the pressures and be more aware of how to reduce fuel consumption. 8 First Aid for LGV and PCV Drivers The course is designed for professional drivers who wish to gain certification in First Aid and as part of Periodic Driver CPC training The workplace for a driver is out on the road, therefore they are likely to be the first to arrive at the scene of a road traffic incident or have a passenger taken ill on-board; this course will provide participants with the essential skills and awareness required to provide first aid until the emergency services arrive. 21 Stress and Addiction This course is for professional drivers who wish to gain a better understanding of the ways stress and various types of addiction affect drivers and their performance. The Stress and Addiction workshop is designed for all professional drivers regardless of their experience. The workshop explores the causes of stress amongst drivers and discusses coping strategies to help reduce risk. Addiction is also covered with discussions on smoking, alcohol and both illegal and prescription drugs and the role these can have on a drivers ability to drive safely. The session starts off with a licence check and introduction to Driver CPC (as applicable). Driving stress and managing pressure This section gives information to the delegate about the different types of stress encountered when driving, with the positives and negatives surrounding stress discussed. Drivers have to deal with potentially pressurised situations when driving such as traffic jams, roadworks and company work schedules etc. Delegates will be given information on how to appraise stressful situations and practical advice on how to alleviate this. Anger on the road The UK road network is becoming more congested and drivers are competing for available space. Practical advice is given throughout this section on how to recognise the signs of angry drivers and how to avoid potential conflict. A driver and emotions Driving is a complex task, this section informs the delegate on how their emotions can have a detrimental effect on their driving ability. Practical advice will be given on how to understanding emotional triggers to avoid potential adverse consequences. 7 hours Professional drivers and employees Understanding addiction This section explores with the the term addiction. How to recognise a person with an addiction, their characteristics (the common characteristics of obsession, loss of control, negative consequences and denial will be discussed and analysed) and personality changes. Smoking and alcohol This section informs the delegate about the ill effects of smoking and how current legislation is enforced within their industry. It also covers the ill effects of alcohol abuse and how this has a direct negative effect on road casualties. Current legislation regarding the amount of alcohol that can be safely consumed and the differences between England and Scotland s alcohol limit will be discussed. Drugs This section devotes itself to a understanding of the detrimental effects of taking any sort of drugs. The commonly found drugs will be discussed such as cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine and how even prescription drugs can have an effect on a drivers. 22 Vehicle Technology This course is for professional drivers who wish to gain a better understanding of the new technology that is being introduced both in vehicle and on the road to enhance and improve a drivers working environment. The Vehicle Technology workshop is designed for all professional drivers regardless of their experience. New technology is being introduced all the time and it is important for drivers to keep abreast of these latest enhancements. This course will help drivers understand the need for change and the way technology is being used in all aspects of their working lives. The session starts off with a licence check and introduction to Driver CPC (as applicable). Evolution of road vehicles This section will look at how large vehicles and associated technology have evolved over time. The requirements of a modern day driver to understand the information provided by vehicle technology. Technology Good or Bad How technology can help or hinder a driver s working day. The use of modern media in vehicles will also be explored. 3.5 hours Professional drivers and employees Technology and the future How technology will change vehicles in the future and how drivers may be affected by this. 23 Product Train the Trainer Courses DriveTech understands that many in-house providers of LGV and PCV driver training often don t have the time or resources available to develop new training courses; a workshop developed from scratch can easily take 2 days to research and a further 2 weeks to write. In a highly competitive commercial environment, the day to day operational needs of the business, such as driver assessments and vehicle familiarisation, will understandably take priority over course development. A high quality solution to the problem of too few courses and too little time is to train trainers to deliver accredited external courses. DriveTech has an extensive and continually expanding course portfolio for which we have developed a two-day train the trainer course. The training will raise awareness of the environmental issues of emissions, fuel efficiency, cleaner vehicles and alternative fuel technologies.
