3 Engines that deliver fuel efficiency and performance At the core of Volvo s FH range are two tough, high-performing engines packed with powerful components that deliver long service life and high reliability. You ll soon discover there s more than just torque. Volvo s D13 (13 litre) and D16 (16 litre) engines are available in a number of power outputs to suit a wide range of application needs. An innovative combination of power and torque the D13 engine delivers 500 or 520hp, representing an impressive power output geared for minimal environmental damage. For a gutsier performance, the D16 is a clever choice. Available in ratings of 580 or 660hp, the D16E is one of the most highly developed engines on the market, offering you driving pleasure, reliability and complete economy. In fact, the Volvo FH is the most powerful truck on the Australian market. Available with either SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) or EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) engine technologies, these engines meet the latest ADR80/02 exhaust emissions requirements. In keeping with Volvo s commitment to the environment, the Euro 4 standard has been chosen as the preferred method of compliance rather than using alternative international standards such as the US EPA04, which allows over six times the particulate level of Euro 4. The D13 and D16E are in-line six-cylinder diesel engines with displacements of 12.8 litres and 16.1 litres respectively. Both engines feature a single cylinder head, overhead camshaft, 4 valves per cylinder and electronically controlled unit injectors. Maximum torque is 2400 and 2500 respectively for FH 500 & 520 models, while FH16 models deliver 2800 Nm at 580hp and 3100 Nm at 660hp. Featuring long stroke design to promote high torque and excellent driveability, each model s fuel consumption is low thanks to complete combustion control. Quick and highly responsive, engine power is immediately sparked from idling speed. At 800 r/min, 60 percent of torque is available within 1 second. Extremely high engine braking effect is effortless with the Volvo Engine Brake. Add an engine-mounted power take-off for direct drive of a hydraulic pump, and you ve got an impressive engine. Power output 650 Nm is standard and 1000 Nm is available on special orders. Exceptional auxiliary brakes Exceptional is an understatement. VEB+ (Volvo Engine Brake+) is genius. Volvo s high-efficiency engine braking system is based on interaction between the exhaust pressure governor and Volvo s patented compression brake. With the help of a camshaft featuring a special profile and four rocker arms, gas pressure inside the cylinders can be regulated as necessary. This makes it possible to create considerable overpressure during engine braking to maximise braking effect on the pistons. The result is smooth, extremely high braking output throughout the rev range. This system makes VEB+ a highly effective auxiliary brake. VEB+ is standard for the D13A and D16E engines. The VEB7 is the equivalent of VEB+ for the D13B EGR engine. Its design is based on the interaction between the VGT-Turbo and Volvo s patented compression brake. Using a specially designed camshaft in combination with rocker arms, the gas pressure in the cylinders is regulated to provide maximum braking power. VEB7 provides extremely high braking torque already at optimum rev range of up to 340 kw. Through the VEB+ and VEB7 engine brakes, safety can be improved while reducing wheel brake wear. In combination with cruise control, VEB+ and VEB7 also create the necessary preconditions for better fuel economy and higher average speeds. 4 I-Shift for intelligent transmission of power I-Shift is so smart, it has a mind of its own. Volvo I-Shift is a 12-speed splitter and range-change transmission with an automatic gear changing system. I-Shift improves the driving experience, changing and choosing gears automatically to suit driving conditions. I-Shift makes driving smoother and safer, and with long intervals between oil changes, I-Shift promotes low operating costs and reduces the impact on the environment. The V2512AT I-Shift is designed for the 13L and the V03112AT for the 16L. Both are dimensioned for gross combination mass of up to 70 tonnes but can be specially modified to handle up to 130 tonnes (special conditions apply). This makes them ideally suited for long-haul operations and regional and urban distribution applications. Manual gear changing capability promotes high driving flexibility. The low weight system boasts a base unit, range-change housing and clutch housing made of aluminium, while helical gears in the range selection are designed for quiet operation. Robust and dependable manual gearboxes Every Volvo gearbox is tailored to its respective driveline and closely matched to engine characteristics to deliver immense starting traction and high cruising speed capability, thanks to close, well matched ratios and a wide gearing span. The V2514B direct and VO2514B overdrive gearboxes are matched to the Volvo 13L engine and are tried and tested units. Overdrive makes it possible to better utilise the engine s economy speed range, resulting in lower fuel consumption. The high strength V02814 overdrive gearbox is offered with the 16E 580 engine and is designed to handle heavy and demanding types of transport. The highest gear is a direct gear that enables power to pass through the gearbox with minimal losses. All gearboxes are 14-speed splitter and range-change transmissions. Long intervals between oil changes promote low operating costs and reduce the impact on the environment. Incorrect down-changes are quashed by a planet range gear with a range lock. A cable link gear-changing mechanism gives a vibrationfree gear lever, showing distinct gear positions. Combined with servo synchronisation, this makes operation easy. Tough clutch for safe driving A drag-type clutch is fitted with dual-disc configuration and high torque rating. The clutch is easy to control and light to operate in close quarter manoeuvres, while the disc damper absorbs jerks and protects the driveline s components. Rear axles that transmit power It s your choice: the Volvo FH comes with tandem axles with single reduction or hub reduction. Both feature low frictional losses and are available with fast ratios to promote low fuel consumption. The low weight of the rear axles also permits high payloads. Rear axles feature rear axle casings in nodular iron, resulting in a compact design with high ground clearance. Maintenance-free wheel bearings that are lubricated and sealed for life at the factory are built to last. Plus, the inter-axle differential lock and cross wheel locks are standard, which increases road-holding ability when the surface is slippery or loose. The axles come with a lubrication-free trunnion block, intermediate bearing and cross-tooth companion flange which results in a reliable and maintenance-free propshaft installation.

5 Tandem axle with single reduction As a single-reduction tandem axle, the RTS2370B is intended for demanding operations under difficult road conditions. 7 Choose from several drive and bogie alternatives with leaf springs or air suspension to create a chassis for every transport application. Tractors are available in 6x4 and 8x4 configurations, while rigids are available in an 8x4 configuration. Air suspension for high comfort Volvo s air suspension system (ECS Electronically Controlled Suspension) for the rear axles (with four air bellows per axle) provides high comfort for driver and cargo. Automatic height control keeps the truck on an even keel irrespective of load, and manual height control aids loading and unloading. Use the control box to program loading bay height, saving you time and physical exertion. Wheelbases for a variety of needs Tractors are available with wheelbases from 3000 to 4300mm, while 8x4 rigids come with wheelbases from 4300 to 5100mm. Wheels and tyres A variety of disc wheels are available including steel disc wheels and aluminium disc wheels for low weight. Market-leading braking system EBS electronically controlled disc brakes For greater value and longer service life, Volvo has engineered brake discs made of durable and heat-resistant metal alloy. Flexible attachment of the brake discs minimises the risk of cracks, and the EBS program package makes it easy to tailor the braking system to suit individual needs. The Volvo Engine Brake+ is integrated with EBS for increased driveability and better fuel economy. Front axles in a choice of configurations Front axles cover a wide range of transport requirements. Front axle capability is up to 7.1 tonnes on 6x4. Twin front axles can be utilised with a load sharing suspension up to 13 tonne capacity (upon application approval). Wheel bearings with maintenancefree unit bearings. Range of front suspension systems Front parabolic springs with balanced spring characteristics and low weight, twin front axles with parabolic springs and maintenance-free front suspension on the chassis team up for a first-class front suspension system. A roll stabiliser is fitted as standard, however a stiffer variant is available as an option. Well-balanced steering Clear direction is essential to any task. When you re in for the long haul, you need a wide frame with high torsional rigidity and matched suspension system to guarantee road feedback and balanced steering. Volvo has added a steering arm and track rod arms with altered geometry to improve steering stability. The steering gear has a variable ratio that alters servo input to suit the current speed. Customer-tailored chassis solutions The chassis range for the Volvo FH is extremely broad, with a wide choice of chassis heights, wheelbases and suspension systems. Chassis packaging is also flexible and can be tailored to suit individual customer requirements. Frames tailored to the transport requirement Volvo s frames are made of high-tensile steel, designed with U-shaped beams in the side-members and cross members for high strength with low weight. Developing several solutions to make bodywork installation fast and easy means you ll be on the road sooner. Frames are tailored using a modular hole pattern system with pre-stamped hole groups. A parallel frame behind the cab, uniformly high frame with a smooth upper face, and the possibility of an entirely clean frame side for body attachment all make tailoring to client specifications an efficient process.

8 D-shaped fuel tanks and large air tanks Volvo s D-shaped fuel tanks are available in a variety of sizes and volumes to provide optimum fuel volume in the available space. Made of aluminium for low weight, fuel capacity is up to 1380 litres in a 6x4 tractor. Steel constructions results in robust air tanks for the braking and air-suspension system. Here, advanced technology meets reliability to bring you a state-of-the-art electrical system. Wiring in the chassis is protected by plastic sheathing, and moisture-proof and protected connection boxes, couplings and connectors and mechanical main cut-outs work to ensure functionality remains consistent. Access to the cab is easy, with a generous 90 degree door opening and a broad overhang to make room for a comfortable entry step. Three large foot-steps are illuminated and there is a grab-handle on both sides for easy entry. To ensure a safe exit all steps are visible on descent. Volvo's Front Underrun Protection System (FUPS) improves the safety of other road users in the event of a collision. The system works to absorb the forces of impact and reduce the risk of an oncoming vehicle becoming wedged under the truck. 11 2008 Emissions and onward Volvo takes its environmental responsibility seriously. Stringent emissions standards are achieved using both Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technologies which are environmentally sustainable and provide customers with the best transport solutions for their needs. Cleaner Exhaust Gases Over the past 10 years, exhaust emissions from heavy trucks have decreased considerably. The step from Euro 3 to Euro 4 means that emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides will be cut by 80% and 30% respectively. With Euro 5, emissions of nitrogen oxides will drop even further.

12 Volvo s 2008 engine family will include Euro 4 EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) solutions. How the EGR system works Clean EGR Low Emissions. High Reliability. Volvo s clean EGR technology involves the partial recirculation of cooled exhaust gas back into the engine in order to lower the temperature of combustion and thus reduce the formation of nitrous oxides within the combustion chamber. Volvo s EGR solution will not only reduce harmful emissions but offer benefits to the customer in the form of excellent power density, improved driveability and enhanced engine braking. The system employs three state-of-the-art components to achieve these advantages and deliver low emission outputs: Holset Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), Hydraulic EGR Valve and Delta-pressure flow sensor. These parts work as a total unit to improve the longevity and durability of the Volvo EGR engine, at the same time reducing exhaust emissions with minimal impact on the chassis or the truck s cooling system. Volvo s extensive research and development has achieved the Euro 4 levels without the need for exhaust after-treatment. Stage 1 A bleed off valve meters a precise amount of exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold which is reintroduced into the engine s intake for further combustion. Stage 2 This metered exhaust gas is cooled to an optimal temperature in a heat exchanger (fitted under the turbo) before it is introduced back into the fresh air intake. Stage 3 The recycled inert exhaust gases are now mixed with the fresh air intake, diluting the available oxygen and also absorbing combustion heat resulting in lower flame temperatures. This significantly reduces the amount of Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions. SCR High Performance. Low Fuel Consumption. SCR technology is based on the after-treatment of exhaust gases. The main components in Volvo s SCR system are a tank and an injection system for AdBlue, as well as a catalytic converter. It is a robust system with few parts and high reliability. Once the exhaust gases leave the engine, all that remains to be done is to reduce the nitrogen oxides. This is done with the help of SCR. It is an effective and thoroughly tested method of cleaning up exhaust gases. The heat of the exhaust system transforms the urea into ammonia, which reacts with the nitrogen oxides in a catalytic converter, transforming them into harmless nitrogen gas and steam - substances that occur naturally in the environment. AdBlue - Safe and easily accessible. AdBlue is a stable, colourless, water-like fluid percent of its content is urea, the rest is deionised water. AdBlue is non-toxic and is not classified as hazardous to health, nor is the fluid flammable or explosive. It is not subjected to any special restrictions for handling or transport. AdBlue is quality-assured and meets the recently announced ISO standard. The amount of AdBlue required to meet ADR 80/02 is around 3-4 percent in relation to the amount of fuel used. The enhanced combustion efficiency of the new SCR equipped engine range helps improve fuel consumption by up to 2 percent over current Euro 3 Volvo engines. The onboard AdBlue tank comes in two application specific sizes: 60 or 140 litres. HOW THE SCR SYSTEM WORKS 1. The AdBlue tank is placed beside the vehicle s regular diesel fuel tank. 2. AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gases in the form of finely atomised spray. Precise metering ensures the optimum blend for every application condition. 3. In the SCR catalytic converter, nitrogen oxide is transformed into harmless nitrogen gas and water. The catalytic converter is completely integrated into the silencer. On Board Diagnostic A monitoring system (On Board Diagnostics) is also provided as part of the SCR package. It alerts the driver if the level of air pollutants in the exhaust gases is too high, and when it is time to refill the reservoir with AdBlue. In the event that the AdBlue tank runs dry or the AdBlue is not to the correct specifications, the driver receives an initial warning that nitrous oxide emissions are at an abnormal level. If nitrous oxide levels further deteriorate, the available torque from the engine will reduce the next time the vehicle becomes stationary, unless the deficit is corrected. If the truck runs out of AdBlue, the truck will not stop nor will any damage occur. SCR technology is ready for ADR80/03 (Euro 5) regulations, which come into affect in 2011.
