SAFETY Safety instructions for the electrical system: Dangerous electric voltages may exist within electrical power or control lines which can cause lethal accidents. In addition to generally applicable basic regulations, the following rules must be observed for any servicing or maintenance work: Regularly check the power connection visually (connecting cables and plugs). In case of visible damages these parts must be replaced immediately. Always disconnect the electric supply from the snowgun before starting any service or maintenance works and secure it against inadvertent switching on. In case of malfunctions, call in an expert. Problems resulting either from malfunctions of the machine or within the installation must be repaired before operating the snowgun again. Except for normal maintenance works, such as checking the connections and the cables, all modifications or replacements on the electric control system must be done by qualified personnel only. Safety regulations for the water system: The operating pressure of the snowgun is maximum 40 bar. These pressures involve high forces which may cause injury in case of defects. When connecting the machine with the pressure water pipe, the following must be observed: Use only hoses and couplings rated for this operating pressure. Ordinary fire hoses are not suitable for snowmaking installations. As with the cables, the hoses and couplings should also be checked regularly in order to eliminate defective parts immediately. Since modern hoses are double-plied, even a hose which is still leak-proof on the outside may be defective. Defective hoses should only be repaired by an expert who is specialized in this field and has experience of hoses with this pressure rating. During operation, a force of up to 800 kg is applied where the hose is connected to the coupling; therefore appropriate know-how is required for casing the coupling. Never try to open up a frozen hose with pressure water. The accumulation of ice in the hose could cause damage to the snowgun (water box, water filter, valves etc.). Never apply pressure to a hose which is connected at one end only. Pressure thrusts can cause highly radial forces which may result in injury. Always roll up hoses for transport and put them on the floor of the vehicle never drag hoses behind a groomer (snow cat) or a snow mobile. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 2
SAFETY Additional safety instructions: A snowgun may not be operated by one person alone. In case of an accident another person must be available to organize rescue or recovery. Wear functional clothing and avoid loose ribbons, scarves, etc. Such parts can easily enter into the suction area of the fan and cause injury. Protect your eyes in case you remove ice from the nozzle ring or from suction-protective grating of the fan. Place the machine in an area as level as possible, in order to ease the handling. Pay attention to the maximum inclination, in the extreme case the snowgun can tip over. For machines on tripods, extend the supporting feet before placing them on the terrain. Once on the terrain, align the base frame with the supporting feet horizontally. For machines on wheels, extend the wheels before placing them on the terrain. For transport with the carrying device, the snowgun must be additionally secured with a chain to the blade of the groomer. Secure the machine on the terrain with levelling legs. Protection of other persons: Besides your own protection during the operation of the snowgun, you should also consider the protection of your guests: Transport the snowgun only with vehicles appropriate for such purpose. Before each transport, check the trailing device of the trailing vehicle as well as the trailer coupling of the snowgun. Ensure the proper function of the safety catch at the trailing device. Additionally, secure the machine with a chain during transport. Transports should be made during the morning or evening hours, when few skiers are on the slope. When placing the machine, make sure that it is visible for the skiers from a safe distance. Consider the placement not only while the machine is operating but also during standstill periods. Make sure that both the area around the machine and the area of the power and water supply are safe during skiing time. Make sure that hoses and cables are not lying on the slope when skiers pass. When crossed by the steel edges of the skis or vehicles, they will inevitably be damaged. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 3

1 DESCRIPTION 1.1. Construction and mode of operation: The Areco snowgun sprays a fine mixture of water and air via nucleator nozzles together with a nozzle ring with special nozzles into the jet of a low pressure fan. Under suitable weather conditions, this water-air-mixture crystallizes into tiny snow crystals until it reaches the ground. Because of the sensitive regulation of the water flow and an optimized geometry of the nozzle ring, the machine works from the absolute marginal/limiting temperature range to the low temperature range with high efficiency and outstanding snow quality. All automatic snowguns from Areco are equipped with the Optiflow technology. The compressed-air compressor can be found under the hinged or detachable cover. The water supply enters through a swivel joint under the chassie of the snowgun or directly via the water box and the valves. The water enters then into the nozzle ring. The machine drains itself after the switch-off. You find the electric cabinet on the side of the snowgun. The parts sensitive to frost are protected against the formation of ice by electric heating. The fan can be swivelled up or down as well as horizontally. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 5
1 OPERATION 1.2. Technical data and performance characteristics: The construction of the base of the snowgun is variable. The following constructions are available: 3-Wheel chassie 3-Tripod chassie Tower Gunlifter Optiflow: All automatic snowguns are equipped with Optiflow technology for optimized and more efficient snowmaking. 8 2 OPERATION 2.1. Placement of the snowgun: It is advisable to put the snowgun in an area which is as level as possible. After the snowgun is placed, it is fastened safely on the ground. When transporting the snowgun make sure that the horizontal swivel mechanism is well fixed and can not move by itself. When transporting the machine, pay attention to the general security regulations Water connection: For the water connection there is a 2 quick coupling at the snowgun directly at the water box or at the central water inlet swivel depending on the model of the snowgun. The snowgun is connected to the tapping station by a 2 hose. For granting easy handling, this hose should not be longer than 20m. In case of longer distance to the tapping station, several hoses are used. We recommend the approved snowmaking hose from Areco Snowsystem Power connection: IMPORTANT: Check all electrical connections before taking the snowgun in use for the first time, they might have become loose during transport. Check and tighten. The supply voltage of the snowgun is 3x400/50Hz VAC (3L+N+PE) with a tolerance of +5%/-10%. Therefore, the admissible tension during operation ranges from 360 VAC to Hz VAC. For 480 Volt 60Hz systems: 3x480/60Hz VAC,+5%/-10% 432 VAC to 504 VAC 60Hz. The machines are equipped in series with a 20m long supply cable with a 5-pole CEEplug with nominal current 63 A. The possible distance from the the tapping station depends on the tension of the electrant and on the warrantable voltage loss. Use only flexible cables which are suitable for this temperature range. The cable must be secured with strain relief. Normally, the supply is for 5-poles (3L+N+PE). For older installations without a zero conductor there is the option to get the supply tension of 230 VAC for the control box through an integrated transformer. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 7
2 OPERATION Check the DIRECTION OF ROTATION at the fan. If the fan is rotating in the wrong direction, switch 2 phases in the supply don t change on the snowgun. Make sure that the hydrant motors at the tapping stations are rotating in the correct direction and that the phases are not crossed for the connecting cables Start-up of the snowgun: 1. Always make sure that the snowgun stands on stabile ground before starting up. 2. Switch on the power. The heating for the water box is automatically in operation if the snowgun is of an automatic model. Otherwise switch on the heating manually. Pre-heating is important in order to avoid breaking the ball valves if they are frozen. Preheat for as long time as needed to melt the ice inside. 3. Switch on the heating for the nozzle ring. If needed, turn on the light as well. 4. Connect the water supply. IMPORTANT: Flush water hoses free from ice before connecting water to the snowguns. Ice can damage the water filter and the water box. Filters must also be cleaned and free from dirt. (See chapter 3.4.) 5. After the pre-heating time (approx. 10 min.), switch on the compressor. Check the pressure by reading it at the pressure gauge (maximum 2 to 4 bar without water). Too high pressure indicates that a part of the nozzles is still blocked with ice. Switch off the compressor, turn on the heating and repeat the operation after 2 to 3 minutes. 6. Switch on the fan. 7. Supply with water (open the hydrant slowly). 8. Regulate the water flow rate. By the position of the magnetic valves and the incoming pressure, the water flow rate is adjusted to the value in accordance with the environmental conditions. Water pressure minimum 8 bar Water pressure maximum 40 bar Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 8
2 OPERATION 2.5. Changing the water flow rate: The water flow rate must be adjusted according to the climatic conditions. Since the adjustment of the water flow rate depends on a host of parameters, it is difficult to specify generally applicable data with respect to the switching points between the individual stages. Some of the factors influencing the possible water flow rate are: Air temperature and relative air humidity Ground temperature (snow temperature) Water temperature and water quality Wind Inclination of the piste and setting angle of the machine Desired snow quality (specific weight) The water flow rate is adjusted by two means of control: Electric On-Off valves (switching the nozzle rows on and off) Water pressure 8 bar 40 bar The nozzle ring is normally equipped with 5 rings of nozzles, the Nucleators (N outer) always on. The rings with the water nozzles (ring 1 ring 4) are either fixed open or switchable with magnet valves, MV. Optiflow means that the ring is split for more steps in the snow curve. With the switches 1.R / 2.R / 3.R / 4.R on the electric control box, the magnet valves for the respective nozzle rings are activated. On the manual fan guns, the rings are controlled in the same way by magnet valves, however the first ring is complete and operated by ball valves, BV. Ring Supersnow and Standard 300 nozzles Supersnow and Standard 32 nozzles N 20 nozzles fix 20 nozzles fix 0,5.R 31 nozzles BV 5 nozzles BV 1.R 44 nozzles MV 3 nozzles MV 2.R 75 nozzles MV 8 nozzles MV 3.R 75 nozzles MV 8 nozzles MV 4.R 75 nozzles MV 8 nozzles MV 0.5 R + 1.R together form the first ring of nozzles. The water pressure is adjusted at the hydrant. The nucleation row is equipped with a pressure regulating valve. The other rows work with the incoming pressure. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 9
2 OPERATION Guideline Areco snowguns Wetbulb temp Rings open Pressure C F Bar Psi Switching off the snowgun: 1. Turn off the water supply at the hydrant and disconnect the hose for water supply from the snowgun. 2. When no more water comes out of the nozzle ring, switch off the compressor and finally the fan. Open all manual ball valves if ball valves are mounted. 3. Switch off the heater. 4. Check oil level at the compressor and refill if necessary. (See 3.2) 2.7. Continuous operation: The snow-making direction of the snowgun must be changed from time to time in order to assure a constant distribution of the snow on the slope. With the optional equipment swivel mechanism, snow can be made on a larger surface (see chapter 2.9.). Under normal operating conditions, the oil level at the compressor should be checked approx. every 10 hours; if necessary refill with oil. On extremely steep slopes, the oil consumption may be a little bit higher. When de-icing, it is not allowed to use tools or ways to de-ice that can damage the snowgun or parts of the snowgun. Both safety and performance can be affected. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 10
2 OPERATION IMPORTANT: When relocating the snowgun, make sure that central water inlet or other parts of the snowmaking machine do not get damaged. Maximum speed for transporting the snowgun is 5 km/h. Areco is not responsible for damage to the snowguns or other equipment incurred when these regulations are not followed Alarm device: The snowmaking machine is equipped with an alarm device which will indicate errors in the snowgun. The circuit breaker for the fan and the compressor motor are monitored by the alarm device. Errors will be signalled by the yellow flash light. Make sure the flash light is activated when starting the snow gun - it indicates because of the low air pressure, but under normal circumstances it should not blink Automatic swivel mechanism: The swivel mechanism is driven by a gear motor that rotates the swivel stand. On automatic machines, the swinging sector set to operation via the automatic control box - manual machines from 2012 have 3pcs fixed swing sectors respectively 60 degrees swing can be selected on the switch Q2 inside the control cabinet. NOTE! The machine must be switched off when adjusting. Q2 Adjust swing sector UP 60 degr MIDDLE 40 degr DOWN 20 degr The snowgun can be manually rotated by decoupling the swing motor, valid for the the 360º model, or manually turning the stand if the machine has swing brake. Hereby the machine may be set to the desired position, even without power; e.g. during the transport of the snowgun. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 11
2 OPERATION Automatic steering of the snowgun: The configuration and the mode of operation of the automatic STF are described in a separate manual Soft starter function - fan motor: During the season 2012, Areco snowguns are equipped with a soft starter function Allen Bradley smart motor control SMC A. Motor protection settings: 9 kw fan motor 18A / 15 kw fan motor 30A If an error occurs, the LED-lamp flashes up to 7 times in a row depending on the cause - see LED-status on the drawing below. DO NOT CHANGE dip switch settings. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 12
3 MAINTENANCE Service: Areco offers a professional service. Please contact us for details and offer. The maintenance work must only be carried out by authorized personnel. Use parts sold by or recommended by Areco exclusively. Below is a short list of important points Summer service: We recommend conducting a revision of the snowgun after every snow season, directly before storing the machines during summer time. Enclosed you will find a check list for the work to be done - see chapter Compressor: As an enclosure to this operating manual you will find a pamphlet from the compressor manufacturer, which contains all the necessary information about the maintenance of the compressor. The right time to make the first oil change - after 50 operating hours - must be strictly observed. Later oil changes should be done after the season or after 500 operating hours. Oil quality: Use only oil recommended by Atlas Copco. PAO compressor oil for ex PAO 46 or equivalent oil. Quantity: 1.2 liter or until maximum level on sight glass - do not overfill Nozzle ring: Despite pre-filtered water, it may happen that one of the tiny atomizing-nozzles gets obstructed. With the help of the accompanying tools, the nozzles can be carefully unscrewed for cleaning. Correctly spraying nozzles are important for a trouble-free operation of the snowgun. Obstructed nozzles lead to icing on the nozzle ring Water filter: To avoid strong soiling of the filter as well as a protection for the high pressure centrifugal pump (pumping station), we recommend the installation of a water filter in the pumping house, unless the water supply is provided directly from the mains. The cleaning intervals of the filter depend on the degree of pollution of the water. Particularly for new snowmaking installations, the filter should be checked more frequently on account of dirt accumulated in the pipes throughout the installation work. The filter insert is taken out and cleaned carefully in hot water and soft soap. Use a brush if necessary. DO NOT USE STRONG WATER JET! Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 13
3 MAINTENANCE 3.5. Pressure regulation nucleator: The pressure regulator for the nucleation is completely maintenance-free. If the pressure regulation does not work, it will result in the fact that the nucleation water comes with a too high pressure and the security valve on the compressor activates, the mobility/function of the valve must be checked. Proceed as follows: The pressure regulating valve for the nucleation water is mounted directly on the drum near the water box, under the black plastic cover. There you can see the regulating screw on the pressure regulating valve. If you turn it clockwise the water pressure increases and vice versa - loosen the locknut first. Check the pressure change on the manometer. When adjusting the valve, let the snowgun run with the nucleation row and one water row with approx. 20 bar water pressure. Regulate the pressure of the nucleation water to 4.5 bar by turning the regulating screw. Then fix the screw, after the adjustment, with the counter nut Electric parts: Servicing shall be carried out at least once a year for all electrical equipment, unless otherwise noted. Check electric connections (tighten attachment screws). Visual control of the electric cables. Check screwed cable glands (to prevent leaking in to electrical cabinet). Check the breakers on all circuit breakers and motor protections. If the switch does not release or if it can t be switched on again, it can be damaged and it must be repaired/changed by another one of the right model immediately. Adjustments (motor protection switch, time lag relay) may not be changed! Electrical work is only to be made by authorized personal Storage of snowguns and accessories: Always store the snowguns, snowmaking parts and accessories dry and dust-free indoors when not in use. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 14
4 PROBLEMS - CAUSES - SOLUTIONS 4.1. Tripped motor protection for fan: 9 manual / MB1 automatic Check motor protection settings: 18 A for 9 kw fan/30 A for 15 kw fan. Possible reasons: Increase of current consumption, caused by undervoltage, a too strong decrease in voltage (minimum operation voltage 360 VAC), defective changeover relay star-delta or phase failure. Check the voltage at entry terminal, only checked by authorized personal. The loss of voltage is calculated from the cable length, the conductive material, the conduction cross section and the load (current consumption). Therefore the real loss of voltage can only be measured when all machines are in operation. Blocking of the fan protection grating by ice also leads to an increased current consumption. Solution: Remove the cause of the failure, switch off the fan, press the reset button of the motor protection - switch 9 or MB1 (fan) - again and restart the machine Tripped motor protection for compressor: 10 manual / MB2 automatic Possible reasons: Increase of current consumption, caused by under voltage, a too strong decrease in voltage (minimum operation voltage 360 VAC), phase failure, over pressure or mechanical damage. Solution: After elimination of the failure, press the reset button of the motor protection - switch 10 or MB2 (compressor) - and start the machine again Tripped motor protection for swing: 11 manual / MB3 automatic Possible reasons: Increase of current consumption, caused by under voltage, a too strong decrease in voltage (minimum operation voltage 360 VAC), swing is not running normally due to ice or snow in the moving parts. Also check break and central axle for mechanical damage. Solution: After elimination of the failure, press the reset button of the motor protection - switch 11 or MB3 (swing) - and start the machine again. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 15
4 PROBLEMS - CAUSES - SOLUTIONS 4.4. Tripped breaker for heating: 12, 13 and 14 manual / F1 F2 and F3 automatic Possible reasons: Defective heating caused by short circuit or accidental ground. For locating the defect, switch off each heating step by step: water box + nozzle ring heating 1, nozzle ring heating 2, nozzle ring 3. Solution: Always replace defective heating. Heating which has not been repaired by the manufacturer will normally lead to another dysfunction within a short time Tripped breaker for transformer 230 VAC: 15 manual / F4 automatic Possible reasons and solution: Check the load of the transformer and reset the automatic breaker. Warning: the motor protection switches should not be pressed repeatedly within a short time, without having eliminated the source of the failure, as this consequently leads to a BURN OUT of the motor windings. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 16
5 TIPS FOR SNOWMAKING Make snow whenever the temperatures allow! The thicker the snow cover is, the better you are secured for warmer weather setting in. Pay attention to the security on the slopes when placing the snowgun, the hoses and the cables. Install barriers to avoid accidents and damage of cables and hoses, e.g. by steel edges. If possible, the direction of snowmaking should always be downhill to reach the farthest throw possible as well as a better distribution of the snow. Don t make snow against the wind direction, because the fan grating and the fan blade may be blocked by the ice. IMPORTANT: In case of strong formation of ice, switch off the snowgun, as the fan blade may be damaged. Furthermore, there is a certain risk of getting injured by ice being thrown back. In case of much icing, switch off the snowgun and turn the fan forwards. Cover the fan protection grating and switch on the nozzle ring heating. After a short time, the ice is defrosted and you can put the snowgun into operation again. A trace of white frost on the grating can be removed without hesitation, even during operation, by knocking against it with a flat-open hand. In any case, don t wear clothes which might be sucked in by the fan e.g. scarves, belts, ties and similar long clothing. The snow quality is influenced by the adjustment of the drum. If the water-air mixture remains in the ambient air for a short time only = humid snow. If it remains for a longer time = dry snow. Thereof results the following: Fix the angle of attack in a way that the mixture remains in the ambient air for the longest time possible and a good distribution of the snow is attained. When you start snowmaking, as well as after a longer period of operation, check the quality of the falling snow and, if necessary, readjust the fan or the water flow rate. Possible ice plates at much frequented places shall first be covered with wet snow and then a dry blanket of snow should be built onto it. Humid snow = open one more nozzle row for a short time or increase the water pressure if possible. Operating Manual Areco Snowguns Page 17
