1 DATE: November l&l992 lmlted DISTRIBUTICN d LIMITED DISTRIBUTION - JOHN DEERE SUBJECT: PENCIL NOZZLES UTILIZED ON JOHN DEERE 300 SERIES APPLICATIONS Stanadyne has been supplying Pencil Nozzles to John Deere for nearly thirty years. Many improvements have been made to Pencil Nozzles during this time but the basic method of installing them in the engine has not changed until recently. During 1988 John Deere changed their 300 Series engine designs and designations from non-metric to metric. As a result of the redesign of the cylinder head, the nozzle clamping arrangement on Pencil Nozzles supplied to John Deere for these engjnes also changed. 2 -2- S.B. 479 Regardless of the type, the thickness of the nozzle clamping spacer and plain washer are selected so as to determine the proper clamping load of the nozzle in the cylinder head. Stanadyne makes several combinations of these components and the proper combination must be used together to attain the correct clamping load and tip projection. The design of the Pencil Nozzles utilized on John Deere metric engines is such that the nozzle clamping components and spacer are retained to the nozzle assembly (Only the clamping screw is a separate item). Since both the clamping spacer and plain washer stay with the nozzle for metric engines, the possibility of incorrect part combinations, which would result in improper clamping force, is minimized. Plain Washer and Nozzle Clamping Spacer Combinations Utilized for John Deere 300 Series Non-metric Engines Pencil Nozzles supplied to John Deere for their Non-Metric engines do not have retained nozzle clamping assemblies and spacers. Therefore, the service replacement nozzles for these applications are provided without the clamping spacer. Over the years several different combinations of plain washers and nozzle clamping spacers have been utilized on Pencil Nozzles for non-metric engines and as mentioned earlier, the proper combination of washer and spacer must be used to ensure that the proper clamping force is applied to the nozzle. The correct combinations of spacers and washers are listed below (Note: Plain Washers are color coded, Clamping spacers are identified by machined grooves on their outside diameter): 1) Original Release 2) Released Early 80 s 3) Released Late 80 s (R34764) Black Washer (R34761) Clamping Spacer (1 groove) (27112 superseded the spacer) (R60746) Green Washer (R60745) Clamping Spacer (2 grooves) (R92352) Red Washer (R92351) Clamping Spacer (3 grooves).130 thick.500 thick.120 thick.490 thick.075 thick.450 thick John Deere Program to Improve Performance on John Deere 300 Series Turbocharged Non-metric Engines John Deere has noted several performance benefits by lowering the nozzle tip further into the combustion chamber of the 300 Series turbocharged engines (change from combination 2 to 3). These include a decrease in smoke, a reduced tendency to misfire during cold start-ups, and a small improvement in specific fuel consumption. For these reasons, John Deere has issued a service letter (see attached) to their service network which recommends using a (R92352) plain washer and a (R92351) nozzle clamping spacer whenever our nozzles are removed from a 300 Series turbocharged non-metric engine. John Deere has subsequently superseded the nozzle with the nozzle in their system since the only difference between them is the thickness of the plain washer that is utilized.

3 -3- S.B. 479 Stanadyne has not superseded the nozzle and continues to offer both the and service replacement nozzles to our service network for the subject applications. Since nozzle clamping spacers normally stay with the engine when Pencil Nozzles are serviced, Stanadyne recommends servicing nozzles using the same plain washers as they are received with (i.e., green for green, red for red). This is based on the assumption that the end user has the proper nozzle clamping spacer to go along with the plain washer that is present on his nozzles when submitted for repair. However, when nozzle replacement is necessary, you may provide nozzles in place of nozzles as long as they are sold with nozzle clamping spacers. You may also upgrade nozzles to by changing the plain washers to P/N and providing a set of clamping spacers if the customer does not have them. Please note that this change pertains only to Non-Metric 300 Series turbocharged engines and involves only and nozzles. This nozzle and clamping spacer combination will allow your customer to take advantage of the performance benefits and ensure that the proper nozzle clamping force is being applied to the nozzle. Higher than normal smoke level. Cause: Fuel injection tip protrusion relationship to combustion chamber effects combustion efficiency. Solution: To obtain a slight improvement in engine specific fuel consumption and reduce tendency for misfiring at cold startup, the fuel nozzle was lowered into the combustion chamber. The increase of tip protrusion was obtained by using a thinner upper injector seal and injector retaining spring spacer. 5 Originally, R34764 Seal (blaak) was used together with R34761 Spacer. In the early 80's production went to R60746 Seal (green), used with R60745 Spacer. These parts were also adopted for service, In the late 80's a new R eal (red) and Spacer were adopted for production and service. Each of these ahanges effectively lowered the nozzle tip farther into the combustion chamber. The newest R92352 Seal and R92351 Spacer can be installed on all 300 Series engines and previously used nozzles. mm 8 Metric engines us8 a different nozzle that no longer needs the spacer under the nozzle retainer cap 8~x8~. It does, how8v8r, use the R92352 Seal. To assure correct retaining spring pressure on the nozzle, the R34764 Black Seal should be used with R34761 Spacer, the R60746 Green Seal should be used with R60745 Spacer and the R92352 Red Seal should be used with the R92351 Spacer. Part6 Xnfomation: When servicing individual nozzles, determine the correct seal by measuring the thickness of the seals and spacers when nozzle is removed.
