2 June 200 MAINTENANCE All machine lubrication is supplied by the external lubrication system. The reservoir is located on the lower rear of the machine (see figure below). Current lube level is visible in the reservoir. If additional lube needs to be added, remove the cap from the fill port and add lube to the proper level. External Lubrication System WARNING! DO NOT ADD LUBE ABOVE THE HIGH LINE MARKED ON THE RESERVOIR. DO NOT ALLOW THE LUBE LEVEL TO GO BELOW THE LOW LINE MARKED ON THE RESERVOIR AS MACHINE DAMAGE COULD RESULT rev G To lubricate the system, pull up on the primer pull-tab located next to the fill port. The primer will automatically send cc of lube through the system. 1 The lubrication system is a resistance type system which forces oil through metering units at each of the 16 lubricating points within the machine. The system uses one metering unit at each of the lubricating points: one for each linear guide pad, one for each ball screw and one for spindle lubrication. A single oil pump is used to lubricate the system. The pump is powered only when the spindle and/or an axis moves. Once powered the pump cycles approximately.2 cc of oil every 0 minutes throughout the oil lines to the lube points. Every lube point receives approximately 1/16 of oil. The control monitors this system through an internal level switch in the reservoir and external pressure switch on the lube panel. All of the flow units for this system have the same restriction value. This means that the amount of lubricating oil to be delivered to each lubrication point is supposed to be the same 0.20cc per cycle, or 1/16th the delivery of the pump. There is a low lube sense switch in the oil tank. When the oil is low, an alarm will be generated. This alarm will not occur until the end of a program is reached. There is also a lube pressure switch that senses the lube pressure. Parameter 117 controls the lube pressure check. If Parameter 117 is not zero, the lube pressure is checked for cycling high within that period. Parameter 117 has units of, 1/50 seconds; so 0 minutes gives a value of Parameter 57, bit "Oiler on/off", indicates the lube pump is only powered when the spindle fan is powered. The lube pressure is only checked when the pump is on rev G 259

4 HJB To incorporate an LHL system to lubricate the linear guides and ball screws, a small modification must be made to the existing lubrication system. The current lubrication system is delivering 0.20cc (~6 drops) to the spindle every time the pump cycles. The LHL lubricant is not suitable for this location. Install the supplied HJB-02 Flow Unit to deliver oil to the spindle at location A. Remove tubing exiting the spindle T Junction at location B and install the plug. Install the Junction and HJB- Flow Unit where space is available immediately following the oil filter. Splice the main tubing through this junction, and connect a small piece of tubing from the HJB- Flow Unit and terminate it back into the lubricating pump. Note, if you drill a hole through the top flange of the pump for this tubing to return to tank, be sure to remove the tank before drilling. Also make sure any metal chips created by drilling do not make there way back into the tank. HJB A HJB 02 D B Main Line T Junction C Spindle T Junction The original lubrication system has a total of 16 Flow Units, all with the same flow value, to lubricate the Linear Guides, Ball Screws and Spindle. This means that all of the 16 lubrication points are supposed to get the same amount of oil, 0.20cc s (~6 drops) per cycle. This is 1/16 the total delivery of the lubricating pump,.2cc s divided by 16 = 0.20cc s. By installing the HJB-02 to the spindle, and the HJB- to return to the tank, the new installed flow relation is now 1/17th the delivery of the pump,.2 divided by 17 = 0.188cc s (~5.65 drops). This difference should be negligible, however the oil output from the pump is adjustable, so you could increase the delivery from the pump slightly (to.4cc s) to make up the difference. Note, prior to modifying the lubrication system you can confirm what is being delivered to the spindle. Install a short piece of 5/2 nylon tubing to the existing Flow Unit going to the spindle, and get a full cycle from the lubricating pump. The oil movement in the new piece of tubing should be about 6 millimeters. After cycling the pump, mark the new piece of tubing to where the oil reached. After modifying the lubrication system, re-install this piece of tubing to the new HJB-02 Flow Unit. Cycle the pump again and confirm oil delivery reaches the mark from earlier. If it is short of the mark, increase the delivery of the pump slightly and try again. Follow this procedure until delivery from the new Flow Unit is the same as the previous one.
