9 1 Introduction 1 Introduction 1.1 Description The Liquid Handling Station can be combined with sample changers equipped with a robotic arm. Depending on the swing direction, either the left-handed ( ) or the right-handed ( ) version of the Liquid Handling Station is used. The Liquid Handling Station consists of two function units: Rinsing unit The rinsing unit is equipped with a two-pipe system. The interior pipe is for rinsing the sample tube. The outer pipe is for the disposing of liquids and collecting the overflow from the interior tube. Dilution unit The dilution unit is used for the fully automated production of diluted solutions. The Liquid Handling Station must be reconfigured for the sample dilution function. In order to obtain a homogeneous dilution, it is important that the concentrate be mixed with the dilution medium. A homogeneous dilution is achieved by installing the magnetic stirrer ( ) in the Liquid Handling Station. 1.2 About the documentation CAUTION Please read through this documentation carefully before putting the equipment into operation. 11 1 Introduction 1.3 Safety instructions General notes on safety WARNING Electrical safety This instrument may only be operated in accordance with the specifications in this documentation. This instrument exhibited no flaws in terms of technical safety at the time it left the factory. To preserve this status and ensure non-hazardous operation of the instrument, the following instructions must be observed carefully. The electrical safety when working with the instrument is ensured as part of the international standard IEC WARNING Only personnel qualified by Metrohm are authorized to carry out service work on electronic components. WARNING Never open the housing of the instrument. The instrument could be damaged by this. There is also a risk of serious injury if live components are touched. There are no parts inside the housing which can be serviced or replaced by the user. Mains voltage WARNING An incorrect mains voltage can damage the instrument. Only operate this instrument with a mains voltage specified for it (see rear panel of the instrument). 3

12 1.3 Safety instructions Protection against electrostatic charges WARNING Electronic components are sensitive to electrostatic charges and can be destroyed by discharges. Do not fail to pull the mains cable out of the mains connection socket before you set up or disconnect electrical plug connections at the rear of the instrument Flammable solvents and chemicals WARNING Recycling and disposal All relevant safety measures are to be observed when working with flammable solvents and chemicals. Set up the instrument in a well-ventilated location (e.g. fume cupboard). Keep all sources of flame far from the workplace. Clean up spilled liquids and solids immediately. Follow the safety instructions of the chemical manufacturer. This product is covered by European Directive 2002/96/EC, WEEE Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The correct disposal of your old equipment will help to prevent negative effects on the environment and public health. More details about the disposal of your old equipment can be obtained from your local authorities, from waste disposal companies or from your local dealer. 4

14 3.1 Preparing the Liquid Handling Station 3 Installation The installation of the Liquid Handling Station is accomplished in three main steps. 1. Preparing the Liquid Handling Station. 2. Mounting and aligning the Liquid Handling Station on the sample changer. 3. Defining the work positions of the sample tube for the Liquid Handling Station. 3.1 Preparing the Liquid Handling Station If the Liquid Handling Station is to be used for dilutions, then it must be converted. The following instruments are required for this purpose: Liquid Handling Station Left-handed version, or Right-handed version, Magnetic stirrer, CAUTION Use caution and do not apply excessive force when carrying out the following procedures. The conversion is carried out through the following steps: Removing the magnetic stirrer dummy 1 Remove the mixing vessel from the main body by hand. 6

Figure 3 Removing the holding mechanism 3 Unscrew the two screws on the base of the main body and pull out the magnetic stirrer dummy. 7

The clamping fastener is no longer used in this application. Figure 5 Removing the clamping fastener Installing the magnetic stirrer 1 Insert the magnetic stirrer from below into the main body and place the connection cable in the corresponding recess. 17 3 Installation 2 Insert the two screws and tighten them. Figure 7 Tightening the magnetic stirrer 3 Place the previously removed holding mechanism against the main body and connect the two parts with the three screws. Figure 8 Screwing on the holding mechanism 4 Mount the mixing vessel and press it all the way down. NOTE Observe the recess on the bottom rim of the mixing vessel for positioning. It must snap into the main body. 9

19 3 Installation 3.2 Mounting the Liquid Handling Station The Liquid Handling Station requires precise mounting and alignment in order to function properly with the entire system. CAUTION Faulty, imprecise assembly The components could become damaged during operation if assembled in a faulty and imprecise manner. Observe the assembly sequence. Observe instrument movements during setup and stop in a timely fashion if necessary. The following description refers to the assembly of a left-handed Liquid Handling Station. 20 3.2 Mounting the Liquid Handling Station Placing the Liquid Handling Station on the guide 1 Attach the Liquid Handling Station to the assembly rail (11-4) with the clamping fastener (11-3). 2 Secure the Liquid Handling Station temporarily in place with the screw (11-2). Aligning the Liquid Handling Station with the rack 1 Loosen the screws (11-1) of the base plate until you can shift the Liquid Handling Station with the support bracket. 2 Shift the Liquid Handling Station with the support bracket until the main body is positioned at an even distance (see Figure 12, page 12) of 0.5 to 1 mm from the edge of the sample rack mm Figure 12 Distance to sample rack 3 Retighten the screws (11-1) to the base plate. 12

21 3 Installation Aligning the Liquid Handling Station with the retaining plate 1 Loosen the screw (11-2) on the clamping fastener. 2 Slide the entire Liquid Handling Station that is on the assembly rail under the retaining plate in the direction of the arrow (see Figure 14, page 14) (14-1). 22 3.3 Defining work positions 1 Figure 14 Alignment with the retaining plate 1 Sample tube swing range 3 Retighten the screw (11-2) on the clamping fastener. 4 Check whether the distance to the sample rack is consistent with Figure 12 and whether the position in relation to the retaining plate (see Figure 14, page 14) is suitable. 3.3 Defining work positions The Liquid Handling Station has three positions. These work positions have to be defined in the software (e.g. MagIC Net ). Defining the work positions for the sample tube The work positions are defined in the software as external positions. You can find the value settings under the following path: Configuration Devices Properties Tower Swing Head External position 14

23 3 Installation NOTE Value settings of the angles External position These value settings are guidelines that may need to be corrected when the Liquid Handling Station is set up. The difference between them lies in their immersion depths (Work position). The standard position for the dilution unit is External position 4. 15

26 4.1 General notes 4 Operation and maintenance 4.1 General notes Care The Liquid Handling Station requires appropriate care. Excess contamination of the instrument may result in functional disruptions and a reduction in the lifetime of the otherwise sturdy mechanics and electronics. Spilled chemicals and solvents should be removed immediately. Above all, the plug connections on the rear of the instrument (in particular the connection socket) should be protected against contamination. CAUTION Although this is largely prevented by design measures, the connection cable should be unplugged immediately if aggressive media have found their way into the interior of the instrument to prevent massive damage to the instrument electronics. Metrohm Service is to be informed in the event of this kind of damage Maintenance by Metrohm Service Maintenance of the Liquid Handling Station is best carried out as part of the annual servicing that is performed by specialist personnel from Metrohm. A shorter maintenance interval may be necessary if you frequently work with caustic and corrosive chemicals. Metrohm Service provides professional technical consultation at all times for the maintenance and servicing of all Metrohm instruments. 18

27 4 Operation and maintenance 4.2 Quality Management and qualification with Metrohm Quality management Metrohm offers you comprehensive support in implementing quality management measures for instruments and software. Further information on this can be found in the brochure "Metrohm Quality Management" available from your local Metrohm representative. Qualification Please contact your local Metrohm representative for support in qualification of instruments and software. The Installation Qualification (IQ) and Operational Qualification (OQ) are offered by Metrohm representatives as a service. They are carried out by trained employees using standardized qualification documents and in accordance with the currently applicable requirements of the regulated industry. Further information on this can be found in the brochure "Analytical Instrument Qualification Confidence in quality with IQ/OQ". Maintenance The electronic and mechanical functional groups of Metrohm instruments can and should be checked by specialist personnel from Metrohm as part of a regular preventive maintenance schedule. Please ask your local Metrohm representative regarding the precise terms and conditions involved in concluding a corresponding maintenance agreement. 30 6 Warranty (guarantee) Metrohm guarantees that the deliveries and services it provides are free of defects in materials, design or manufacturing. The general warranty period is 36 months (exclusions below) from the date of delivery or 18 months in the event of continuous operation. The warranty remains valid on the condition that the servicing is provided by a service organization authorized by Metrohm at defined intervals and with a defined scope. The warranty period for anion suppressors of the type "MSM" is 120 months from the date of delivery or 60 months in the case of continuous operation. The warranty period for IC separation columns is 90 days after start-up. For third-party components that are recognizable as such, the manufacturer's warranty regulations apply. Consumables and materials with limited storage life and glass breakage in the case of electrodes or other glass parts are excluded from the warranty. Warranty claims cannot be asserted if the ordering party has failed to meet its payment obligations according to schedule. During the warranty period, Metrohm undertakes either to replace free of charge or to credit the purchaser for any modules or components that can be shown to be faulty. Any transport or customs fees that may apply are the ordering party s responsibility. The precondition for this is that the ordering party has to specify the article number, the article designation, an adequate error description, the delivery date and (if applicable) the serial number or chip data in the Support Tracker. Metrohm then decides whether a replacement or a credit note is to be issued or whether the faulty part has to be returned using the Return Material Authorization (RMA). If a replacement or credit note is issued, the ordering party undertakes to store the faulty part for at least 24 months in accordance with the current storage directives (in compliance with ESD guidelines) and to hold it in readiness for onsite inspection or for return shipment to Metrohm. Metrohm reserves the right to invoice the ordering party for these articles, including retroactively, in the event of noncompliance with these preconditions. The same warranty periods that are specified for a corresponding new part apply to parts that are replaced or repaired within the above-mentioned warranty periods. However, replacement or repair of a part does not extend the warranty period of the entire system. 22

31 6 Warranty (guarantee) Deficiencies arising from circumstances that are not the responsibility of Metrohm, such as improper storage or improper use, etc., are expressly excluded from the warranty. Metrohm also offers a 120 month spare parts availability guarantee and a 60 month PC software support warranty, calculated from the date on which the product is withdrawn from the market. The content of this warranty is the ability of the customer to obtain functioning spare parts or appropriate software support at market prices during the time of the warranty period. If Metrohm AG is unable to meet this obligation due to circumstances beyond the control of Metrohm AG, then the ordering party shall be offered alternative solutions at preferential conditions. 23
