This dataset has been prepared using a revised methodology and new dissemination formats. The previous fertilizer data series in FAOSTAT is continued with this data release. The fertilizer statistics data is received from countries in fertilizer product format and is converted to nutrient format and summary totals calculated for: Production, Imports, Exports, Non-fertilizer use and Consumption for the straight fertilizers: Nitrogen (N), Phosphates (P205), Potash (K20).The review and analysis starts from Some countries compile fertilizer data on a calendar year basis, while others are on a split-year basis. For the purpose of data dissemination, the concept of a calendar year (January to December) has been adopted. Fertilizer data reported by a country following a split year basis will be treated on a calendar year basis, January to December. If a country data was reported produced, imported, exported or consumed, for example, in June 2004/July 2005, but actual activity occurred in half year June 2004, the half year 2004 will be recorded to represent the calendar year ESS/SWFAS 37 last update : 11/10/2010

The same holds for population data of the UN. Whenever this happens, FAO revises its estimates of undernourishment accordingly. Therefore users are advised to refer to changes of estimates over time only within the same SOFI publication and refrain from comparing data published in editions for different years. For the Former USSR Republics included in Central and Western Asia the baseline period refers to for proportion of undernourished and population based for number of undernourished There is no established convention for the designation of "developed" and "developing" countries or areas in the United Nations system. In common practice, Japan in Asia, Canada and the United States in northern America, Australia and New Zealand in Oceania, and Europe are considered "developed" regions or areas. In international trade statistics, Israel is treated as developed country; countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Asia are treated as developing regions while in Europe as developed areas. South Africa is treated as developed. Special groupings even if they have the same name as in SOFI, they are different in country composition.
