4 GLA Various Types of Glass Available Glass is the only building material that not only insulates us from temperature extremes; it can also control the passage of light and heat into and out of our homes. There are 3 main areas to consider when thinking about windows and glazing for your project: Natural light, solar heat gain, and thermal conductivity. By choosing the right performance glass, you can enjoy your views and natural light while controlling UV and glare. Benefit from the natural warming effect of solar heat during winter and minimise its impact during summer and insulate your home against excessive heat loss or gain. By understanding your climate s heating and cooling needs, you can determine your overall glass selection priorities. Performance glass can also help to overcome site limitations so you can still enjoy your views without compromising your home s energy efficiency. Glass Types Clear Float Glass Clear Float Glass is a visually colourless and distortion free glass providing high light transmission (daylight) and clarity. Clear Float Glass is the core base product for most of performance glass products and is commonly used in windows and doors. Tinted Glass Tinted glass is produced by adding metal oxides to float glass during manufacture. Tinted glass absorbs and re-radiates solar energy reducing heat and it can provide cost effective climate control. Tinted glass also reduces sun glare and is aesthetically appealing. Tinted glass is available most commonly in Grey and Bronze. eflective Glass eflective Glass offers greater solar control than standard tinted float glass and can be used to create a specific visual appearance in a building. A metalic coating is applied during the manufacturing process and creates a highly reflective appearance. eflective Glass is typically available in Clear, Neutral, Grey, Bronze, and Blue colours. 4

5 Toughened Glass Toughened Glass is a safety glass that has increased strength and will usually shatter in small pieces when broken, When broken, particles are small and are relatively harmless compared to the sharp splinters resulting from the breakage of annealed glass. The toughened process also greatly reduces the risk of thermal breakage and increases strength. Most popular glass types can be toughened and toughened glass is available in Clear, Tinted, eflective, and Low E glass types. Laminated Glass Laminated Glass is made up of two or more layers of glass permanently bonded together with an interlayer. The lamination process results in the glass panels holding together in the event of breakage, reducing the risk of harm. Laminated Glass is classified as Grade A safety glass. The interlayer can be selected to deliver special performance characteristics such as improved insulation properties, improved security, and improved sound insulation properties. Most popular glass types can be laminated and laminated glass is available in Clear, Tinted, eflective, and Low E glass types. Laminated glass is a popular choice for residential and commercial windows and doors. Laminated glass offers improved accoustic insulation over typical annealed glass. Low E Glass Low Emissivity Glass has a thin metallic coating on the glass that reflects thermal radiation or inhibits its emission reducing heat transfer through the glass. Low E glass reflects the radiation rather than absorbing it, improving insulation. Low E glass is available in a range of colours including Clear, Neutral, Blue, and Grey. Low E glass provides improved insulation properties and is a good choice in all climate situations. Double Glazing Double Glazing or Insulated Glass Units (IGU s) consist of two panes of glass bonded to both sides of a spacer to create one unit. The space between the panes of glass may be filled with Argon gas to increase the insulating properties of the double glazing units. IGU s can be made up of various types of glass including Low E, Laminated, Toughened, Tinted, or eflective glass. IGU s provide signicantly improved insulation properties and are ideal for climates where extremes of heat or cool are experienced. 6 Energy Awareness Energy efficient windows: An introduction Going GEEN is a major trend at the moment and having energy efficient windows in your home is quickly becoming a must-have for many people. Not only is the "green" movement near the top of many political agendas, its presence is often seen throughout the mainstream and minor media. The bottom line is this: green sells and going green is cool. OUTIDE INIDE The trend is positive. With energy costs reaching new heights, we need to be proactive and intentional. We should not only reduce the amount of energy we use, but also conserve the energy we don't. ince nearly 15-20% of all home energy is lost via windows and doors, having energy efficient windows in your home should be a priority. eflectance Absorbtance Direct Transmittance The focus of this introduction is to help explain (without getting too technical) the current energy ratings scheduled to today's energy efficient windows. These ratings are crucial in making informed decisions regarding the purchase of energy efficient windows for new home construction or replacement. With the green trend gaining momentum, an informed decision concerning one of the most critical areas of energy loss (or conservation) in your home is paramount. Insulated Glass: (IG) Two or more individual panes of glass separated by a specified spacer bar system and then sealed to be air and water tight. The "captured" airspace between the panes of glass forms the insulating barrier. The majority of modern energy efficient window systems utilize some type of safety insulated glass unit (IGU) application. Emissivity Emissivity is the capability of a surface to emit heat radiation. A black surface is often used as a constant in measuring other surfaces against it. For example, in measuring the emissivity of a particular IG unit, the IG unit is placed next to a solid black surface and subjected to an identical heat source. Measurements of heat radiated from each surface are then taken. The lower the number results in better heat-reflecting capability. e-radiated Outwards eflectance The proportion reflected back in the atmosphere. Absorbtance The proportion absorbed by the glass. e-radiated Inwards Direct Transmittance The proportion transmitted directly through the glass. Total Transmittance The proportion transmitted through the glass by all means. Clear glass behaviour Heat absorbing glass. Heat reflecting glass. 7 U-Value: (and its relation To -value) Clear glass behaviour 100% incident U-Value is the measure of a window's ability to reduce heat loss during indirect radiation exposure; such as during the winter months in moderating climates. Lower U-values translate into less indirect heat lost from the interior of the home resulting in lower heating costs. U-value is the inverse of -value (a more common term used in the insulation business). To find a correlating -value from a given U-value, simply divide the number 1 by the U-value. Lower U-values correlate to higher -values. For example: 1 divided by a.50 U-value gives us an -value of o, even with the large disparity between the wall vs. window insulating factor, improving U-values greatly increases the energy efficiency of the home. olar: Heat Gain Coefficient (HGC) olar Heat Gain Coefficient (HGC) is a measure of a window's ability to reduce heat gain during direct radiation exposure; such as during the summer months in warmer climates. A lower HGC translates into less direct heat being pulled into the home resulting in lower cooling costs. By placing a Low-E coating, which usually consists of a microscopically thin layer of metallic oxides (primarily silver), on a glass surface, the ability to transfer heat radiation is lowered. The heat remains on the side of glass where it originated. Low-E glass works based on the angle of direct solar radiation. Due to the sun's differing angles at various times of the year, Low-E coatings work well in all seasons. In summer, when the angle is more direct, or "a high sky" they reflect heat. In winter, when the sun's angle is less direct, "a lower sky" they absorb the indirect heat. eferring back to the previous demonstration, the non Low-E coated glass allowed the direct heat to pass through the glass thereby warming your interior glass. By trapping a layer of dry air between two glass panes, thermal resistance is naturally increased and heating and cooling costs reduced. Condensation Eliminated The tremendous insulating properties of dehydrated air in the IGU s ensure the inner pane is at virtually the same temperature as the room, thus largely eliminating condensation. educed Noise Levels Generally, IGU s offer approximately 20 30% improvement in sound control over a single glazed window, dependent on glass selection.
