2 2009 IRONMAN - RACE OF CHAMPIONS by Tim Brewer August means two things to grass roots racers in North Alabama - HOT TEMPS and IRONMAN WEEKEND! The Ironman is a three day event where competitor, machine and the elements face off for an epic showdown of almost mythic proportions... Ok... Maybe it s not quite that epic. There are three parts to the Ironman event - Drag Racing, Autocross and Rallycross. To stand a chance of winning all three events must be run in the same car. Points are awarded based on the ancient art of reading the tea leaves. In the end, you have to be quick at all three events to stand a chance. Ironman 2009 started on August 7th. Last years repeat winner could not make it so the coveted trophy was up for grabs. Six competitors braved the wilds of Toney Alabama to run at Huntsville Dragstrip on Friday night. Charles and Barbara had carb trouble on the RX-7 and never were able to get a good pass. Leon had the fastest time until Randy showed up and beat all of us on his first run. Tim Boyett finished third and ended up fourth. I did manage to get two bonus points for best reaction time and most consistent two runs. I Saturday was the Autocross portion of the Ironman. It was held at John Hunt Park on a typical August day. Leon took top raw time at the autocross in the supercelica and Tim Boyett was second. I had a downright miserable day and ended up 3rd on a set of corded tires. Charles swapped the RallyCross RX-7 for his white Autocross RX-7 and ended up 4th. Randy ended up 5th and Barbara was 6th. The stage was set for Leon, Tim Boyett and Randy to fight it out in the dirt. Whichever one of these three that won the RallyCross would be the overall winner. RallyCross, for those not aware, is scored a little differently than Autocross. All of your runs are added together so consistency is key. It turns out that Mr. Boyett is very fast and very consistent in the dirt. He ended up taking the win and FTD AND most importantly, the Ironman trophy in the process. Randy was just over 3 seconds back and I ended up a distant third. Leon was 4th and Charles and Barbara were 5th and 6th. Even though I wasn t a threat at the end, I had a blast the whole weekend. 3 2009 TAC POINTS #6 by TIM BREWER The 6th TAC autocross for 2009 was held on August 8th at sunny John Hunt Park. This event was part of the Ironman Challenge. Ric Hamby was the event master. We ended up with 60 entrants for the day - a bit down from last year. The weather was hot, dry and sunny. John Waight traveled up from Birmingham and showed us all how it was done with a FTD on the day and a 2nd in PAX. Brett was hot on his tail and ended up with the 2nd quickest RAW time and the top PAX spot for the event. Leon was flying as usual, finishing 3rd RAW with a Tennessee Region SCCA driver, Cory McKee right behind him. Rob Cayse rounded out the top 5 in RAW. I ended up third in PAX after a frustrating day of fighting the course and the car. Rob finished 4th and Matthew Thompson finished in the 5th spot. Mike Thompson finished with top honors in the Novice category, edging out both Bloodworths and George Myers. We finished up a little early and had fun runs for quite a while until the end of the day. All of the proceeds from the fun runs went to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Thanks to everyone that came out and made this event a success!!! PG 3
