1 GUNSMOKE VOLUME 14 Issue 1 January 1998 THE BUFF CHRONICLES NOTES FROM THE IPSC RANGE CHAIRMAN Well sports fans I ve just returned from another trip to Bakersfield which included dinner at Buck Owens place with the dulcet tones of Buck, the Buckaroos, & Howie on the beer mugs. Speaking of Howie; he won two of the three guns at the 5-Dog raffle which is almost as weird as me winning two consecutive raffle guns at the RRGC bar raffle. Go figger. The match (5 Dog Winter Classic was) was neat, we had a terrific squad including 8 of us from here. Everyone else went home, but I was too dogged, so went to the new cinema complex which had 14, count em, theaters and was impressive. Then there was the early morning tule fog on super Sunday which made the drive home surprising. The Limited Match on January 18th had a visit from Noah. Over 50 people signed up; but only 22 finished the match. Gene Smyth did a terrific job as MD and it s too bad that he was nearly drowned. It may be karma from Nolan s wet stages at various Golden Gate matches, but who knows? Anyone who signed up and paid but didn t fire at least one stage will be given a free match. Please don t ask for a freebie if you fired one shot. The Golden Gate has been scheduled for August We are always grateful for any help, so see me, Dave Antonini, or Dan Ruff if you want to help. RRGC and the Hot Shots thank TASC and the people who put on the Bay Bridge Charity Classic for the donation of the range fees to the following charities: $ to the Richmond Rescue Mission; $ to Children s Hospital of Oakland; and $ to the San Pablo Senior Center. After this issue Gunsmoke will be published bimonthly. Match results will be included, but stage results will be accessible on the web page only. Please send me any articles, pictures, commentaries etc. I would like this blurb to be more literate. Your faithful editor, H. RICHMOND ROUGH RIDERS WILL HOLD THE FOLLOWING 1998 COWBOY EVENTS: MATCHES PRACTICES FEB 22, 1998 JAN 24, 1998 APR 26, 1998 MAR 28, 1998 JUN 28, 1998 JUL 25, 1998 AUG 09, 1998 SEP 26, 1998 OCT 25, 1998 Match Report Championship Series January 4, 1998 A hail of a match! This season-opener survived a near-death experience when a hailstorm erupted at midday. The approaching dark sky looked like the end of the world, and when the hail came machinegunning down, some of our shooters headed for the exits. The diehards, of course, cowered under the various shelters and kept asking me, the omniscient and all-knowing Match Director, "What are we going to do?" I didn t have a clue, of course, but I have found in these cases that it is often helpful to walk around as if you actually were doing something; after a while the weather changes (or it doesn t) and then you do know what to do "Magnetic Anomaly," which featured two final arrays of steel that broke many hearts. I was on this course when the sky went black and the hail came down. As the first shooter after the hail turned to rain, I got to shoot it in a steady downpour. With all of the droplets on my scope there were 14 red dots from which to choose Travis Tomassie blazed though this stage like a hot knife through butter, 24 seconds flat, taking Rod Maeda by five percent and Russ by eight percent. Stage 4 ("Water World") was an extravaganza worthy of the Kevin Costly movie of the same name, created by Mike Bush. I remember cowering under shelter during the height of the hailstorm, and hearing some poor devil shooting this one. I wonder how he did? Probably drowned, poor devil Russ Wakida resumed his winning ways on this stage, but Steve Wong (98.387%) and Rod Maeda (97.416%) were close enough to require a photo finish. The sun did come out eventually, after some of us had gotten our guns and scopes washed by shooting prematurely. Ah, the impetuousness of youth! Stage 1 ( "Tight, isn t it?" was an act of sadism and terror by Ron Gunar. When before the match I protested his six tiny steel plates surrounded by no-shoots he calmly reminded me that I d had to beg for volunteers to be CRO s. All I can say is, anyone who shot this stage poorly should have volunteered to set up the stage!! When I stood at the line and saw my fat red dot covering two plates I thought "Houston, we have a problem." But then, it s always nice to have your match destroyed after six shots. Thanks, Ron;. Russ Wakida raced through the course and finished first by more than ten percent. Must have a small red dot Stage 2 ("Ahhhhhh!) was a masterpiece by Al Jung with toxic inspiration by Ray Wakida. It had a nice mix of steel and paper targets at crossed angles. Very challenging mentally; you had to make your plan and execute it flawlessly. Al and Ray laid out the course to miss the lakes except when the scorers had to get to the targets! Once again, Russ was a lean shooting machine, winning by four percent over Travis Tomassie. The classifier was another brilliant 6-shot design from Sedro Woolley. I figure it rains a lot up there, and they don t have much to do. My thanks to the CRO s, who only needed to be humiliated in public to volunteer. On a serious note, I believe that newer shooters could learn a great deal that would help their scores by merely designing stages. Watching how others dissect your creation is invaluable in teaching you to dissect theirs! We do as a club have a serious problem in getting volunteers for our matches. When the experience is so valuable, that really doesn t make a lot of sense. Our match winner was Russ Wakida, with Travis Tomassie second overall and Rod Maeda third overall. Rod Maeda was first Master, Ray Wakida first A, Walter Hashimoto first B, Ken Bagley first C, with Ron Gunar first D. Dave Uchida was first limited Thanks all! Carl Roessler Match director On stage 3, Eric Warren set up an enjoyable course called
