SAVVA TECHNICAL TIPS No 125 WHO REMEMBERS THESE CARS in SA? 2 SAVVA Technical Tip 125 Safety fuel pump cut-offs We received this excellent advice about fuel cut-offs from Ferrari owner Robert van Zyl and regretfully I have been remiss in not publishing it earlier apologies Rob. The warning is that if you use or convert to using an electric fuel pump a cut out should be installed to disconnect the electric pump should the vehicle be involved in an accident. If the engine is not running for whatever reason the pump should stop pumping. RECENT PHOTO FINDS To Quote Rob: I agree that the fitting of electric fuel pumps is a practical solution to the problem of cars that are not in use on a daily basis. I have also fitted electric pumps to some of my cars. During the carb era Ferrari also fitted an electric pump to his cars in addition to a mechanical pump. In some instances he fitted an electric pump and two mechanical pumps. This car was in South Africa between 1947 and mid-1970 s There is a problem with fitting an electric pump without some cut-out device in the electric circuit. Early fuel injected cars had an inertial cut-out switch which stopped the fuel from pumping when the car was subjected to an impact. This could also be a problem when driving on some of our bumpy roads. Fred Snr in his new 1929 Chrysler Roadster Bev Scheefermann in a 1908 Renault There are two solutions: Fit an inertial cut- out switch. Fit a pressure sensing switch to the oil supply which would cut off the electricity to the pump if the engine is not running. It might be possible to use the oil pressure warning light switch but I have not tried this. You will have to fit a press- button over riding switch to get the car started before the oil pressure has had time to build up. Good Luck p.s. Ideally the electric pump should be used for priming the carb and then switched off and the mechanical one then taking over. Chrysler turbine, one of 55 made. One toured South Africa in either late 50 s or early 60 s. It was demonstrated to the motoring press and based at the Balalaika Hotel in Sandown Johannesburg. A veteran run in the 70 s

3 THE BUILDING OF AN AUSTIN SEVEN NIPPY SPECIAL. By John Barty Photos by Basil Chassoulas The Austin Seven Nippy 1s a two seater road going sports car. My first recollection of a motoring activity was when I was 8 years old and my father borrowed a car for the day so that the family could go to a local beach. Along the route was a hill which the car could not climb, so my father tried to reverse up the hill - which again failed. These failures stuck with me as did the type of car, which was an Austin 7. When I was 16 years old I used to walk to work and on occasion I would be given a lift by an older colleague-again in an To Austin date 7. are incalulable In 1960 I saw my first lotus 7 and I desperately wanted one but could not afford it. I joined the 750 Motor Oub and very soon learned that, by far, the majority of home built sports cars were Austin 7 based, so that it was inevitable that when I eventually started to build a " Special " it should be based on an Austin 7. The parts that I started with comprised of a Nippy body with the doors welded closed and a chassis from a later Saloon. I also had most of an engine and lots of transmission, suspension, fuel system, a dashboard with some instruments and MANY wheels. All the parts were in pieces and many of them proved not to fit together. I then decided to build a "Special", typical of those built by good Engineering Students in the late 1950's. These builders included Colin Chapman, Jack French, Eric and George Bradley and many others. Light weight, good roadholding and economy were paramount and as Colin Chapman famously said "If it weighs anything, it's too heavy and if it costs anything, it's too dear". The build has been spread over many years and many parts have been finished and fitted only to be discarded if a more desirable part became available or if my manufacturing capabilities improved so that I could make more sophisticated replacements. I believe that "Special' building is more involved than restoration, in that all the normal restoration procedures still take place, such as, stripping. cleaning, thread replacement, body repairs, painting and trimmimg and, in addition, it is necessary to design, manufacture and fit the special parts which often necessitates major modifications to the standard parts. It is also made more difficult if a time period, e.g. late 1950's is chosen as this means that manufacturing processes are also restricted to those available at that time, e.g. no laser Cutting and no Base Coat/Clear Coat Paints. In practice, this means that two builds are required, i.e. first build where all the parts are fitted together to ensure that they are compatible and will work. It is inevitable that some parts will not be

4 compatible with what work has already been done so that modifications to previous workare necessary and this will of course damage finish on earlier work. The aim at this stage is to repair previous finishes so that the end result will have an acceptable aesthetical finish which will pass the all important Road Test. Once the vehicle is completed this far it should be run for 1 or 2 Thousand Kilometers to prove that it is safe, practical and convenient. When you are satisfied that your vehicle does what you expected, it can then be stripped and rebuilt in it's final form and it is at this time that any desired plating of nuts, bolts and fittings can be done and upholstery details can be finished. Detailed hereafter in Part 1 is a list of the special modifications made and each modification is numbered. In Part 2 the reason for the modification is listed using the same numbers i.e. modification No1 in Part 1 is described as reason No 1 in Part 2. PART 1 MODIFICATIONS CARRIED OUT For details of modifications Part 1 and Part 2 please see contacts below : CONCLUSION. The hours consumed in my build to date are incalculable but have been very instructive and enjoyable and if you still decide to go ahead and build a "Special", I wish you all the luck needed and offer my assistance where possible. All the tools listed in Part 3 are home made and while they are not all strictly necessary, they certainly repaid the time spent in making them. All the work carried out was made very much easier by having access to the help of fellow enthusiasts many of whom can help with machining, advice, processes and parts and most importantly they offer JOHN BARTY support on the many occasions when progress seems to be nil and problems to be insurmountable. 1 st August 2017 Article submitted by: Basil Chassoulasbasil.ecuri e@gmail.com Member of BHVEC, Piston Ring, VVC,HTA,A7CSA,MB CSA &TLR

5 TO SURVIVE, THE OLD CAR MOVEMENT NEEDS THE NEXT GENERATION As a community we have largely failed by not bringing enough of the younger generations to car shows and not encouraging their participation. We have probably already lost so many potential enthusiasts. Car clubs in most areas are made up of nearly all retired people. There is nothing wrong with that on the surface, but the lack of age diversity will end up destroying the hobby in the end. Look at it this way: if a car in a reasonable condition is selling for a reasonable price, or best offer, then there has to be a car for almost every budget out there. We have, as a community, become far more accepting of unrestored cars, project cars, and even rat rod type vehicles. Just preserving a car for the next generation is enough. However, we don t have many in the next generation to hand them off to. Tell them how much fun your family has in the hobby, or go that extra mile and take them to a car show in your car. The goal is to increase our numbers to a sustainable level. In the hierarchy of collectible cars, four doors have no respect at all. That is sad, because four doors are still sensible transportation for families entering the hobby. There are a lot of kids that don t have the opportunity to grow up loving cars like we did. Maybe if some of the families we see at car shows started looking at the classifieds, they would find that entering the hobby is within their budget. There are a number of four doors out there in good condition with asking prices far lower than other body styles. An example is the car pictured, a 1963 Chevy 2, a 4 door saloon. We need to do something before it is too late. That is, if it isn t too late already. Modified from an article submitted by Ken Tilley U.K written by Jeff Bennett USA Some people may remember the radio and press advert Chevy 2 for 62

MARCH 6 THE TUCKER CAR Preston Thomas Tucker , controversial forward thinking and wonderful sales man. Was he a fraud or just plain inexperienced in the business world? In his younger days he was a partner of Harry Miller maker of more Indianapolis 500-winning engines than any other during this period. Tucker designed the gun turret used by the US navy and army. His plan to build the Tucker car was doomed from the start. The original engine was a complicated 589 Cu inches boxer 6 with no camshaft, the valves operated by hydraulic cylinders. The production Franklin engine The engine included fuel injection and drive by torque converter. It had many safety features which became standard in many cars later. The original engine ran, but only at slow revs as the hydraulics could not react quickly enough. The production engines were a modified 334 Cu inch Franklin D- 335 aircraft engine. Not being able to get steel or many supplies, production was limited. The other car manufacturers were rumoured to be behind this. Then the Government intervened and a protracted court case ensured the closure of the plant. Two years later he was found not guilty of fraud. Only one of the original engines remain intact. I was able to photograph it in The San Diego museum a few years ago. The original design On display at Gillmore museum On display at the Ford museum Fred

MARCH 7 DEC 2017 WHEELS THROUGH TIME. This museum was founded in 1992 by museum curator Dale Walksler with the slogan The Museum that Runs. He was seen on DSTV recently in a series called What s in the Barn? Dale has a wonderful collection of US bikes from Most are not restored to original as he would rather have them as found, but he does sufficient to make them run and ridable. He has created many sections in the museum showing what workshops in a country town would have looked like in the 20 s and earlier. Although mostly bikes, he also has a very interesting collection of cars interspersed with the bikes. There seems to be no planned order. Situated near the Blue Ridge Parkway in the town of Maggie Valley, North Carolina near the Blue Mountain National Park, this is a fascinating stop-over for any motoring enthusiast. For those who like a tipple, you can buy genuine Moonshine at the local shop across the way! THE MUSEUM IN MAGGIE VALLEY DALE and FRED in the MUSEUM The TRAUB the rarest motorcycle in the world? 8 MARCH DEC WELKOM MOTOR SHOW SATURDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 2017 This was one of the few recognised motor shows in S.A. that I had never been to, and it was on my to do list, as 2017 was to draw to a close. Being on the platteland so to speak, and because of traditional Sunday religious preference, the big day was designated as a Saturday. This meant an early start from PMB on Friday to cover the kms in good time with the 04 Cadillac on tow, and to use the better option of roads via Winburg and up the N1 to Ventersburg and then on to Henneman and Riebeekstad, rather than the direct route from the N5 at Senekal to Ventersburg on the R70, which in places has virtually disappeared I was told! As I approached Welkom (now the second biggest city in the OFS), I was immediately struck by the vast open spaces and orderly planned roads, huge traffic circles, and almost no traffic lights. It was like being in another country. If anything, the traffic such as it was, moved far quicker than in any normal SA city. The show was to be held on the sports fields of the HTS school. On arrival I saw that a huge grid pattern had been painted on the grass so that vehicles could be parked in absolutely straight lines equidistant from each other. I was directed to the centre spot at the exact centre of the first row from the Grand Stand, and knew then that there was something special obviously brewing. Soon other cars arrived and before long, at least five or six rows were full. Between each row was an access row and at every third row there was space for Traders stands a very good idea. Although many cars had covers on, most were removed by the time proceedings started on Saturday morning. It had rained overnight so much cleaning up needed first to be done. An invitation for the Chairman s braai on Friday evening had been issued, and just before dusk, show participants and friends arrived en masse. It was a really special feeling, and sight, to see the rows of cars parked in the beautiful OFS dusk and under the bright lights. A marquee was available for seating and a bar in another was well patronised and also had a live band providing Country and Western music. Braai packs were available for purchase and complimentary side dishes and buttered bread rolls supplied by the Welkom Old Auto Club. Soon new friends were made and many old faces from across SA recognised, all sharing the same passion. The first order of the day on Saturday was the welcome, conducted by the Club Chairman, Danie Correia, before handing over to the local Dominee for a prayer which also contained thanks for the rain, and virtually on cue, the heavens opened again, and did so again on another two occasions before the close! The local radio station was there in force, broadcasting from a caravan, and a reporter with a live microphone was at hand wandering between the cars. As for the few cars that had covers on (three) in total, the reason

MARCH DEC was soon revealed as each car was presented to the assembled crowd, and cover removed with due pomp and ceremony, as the owner was called upon to tell the crowd about his car. One was a beautifully restored DAF, 99.9% finished within hours of the show, with the last vital bits arriving from Holland on Thursday. The other was a mid 60 s Ford Consul with a brute V8 squeezed into the engine bay. My moment also arrived when the microphone was thrust into my hands for me to give the rundown on the Cadillac, which culminated in my having to start it, open the engine bay and then answer a million questions. An interesting diversion happened in the early afternoon when the radio announcer said he was about to kill the music to allow the V8 s to have their engines revved. It was a bit of an unexpected let-down, as many of the newer V8 s were very well behaved and not as loud as expected. I LOVED the massive and beautiful new Corvette, an American Supercar, vying for attention over the five new Ford Mustangs also present. Stationary engines there were, alas only two, both well restored and chugging away. Rude sign on the back of a poor Austin A40! For me star of the show was the Club PRO Thereza Louw, who had clearly worked for many months, and who had done a splendid job allowing everything to run like clockwork. Thank you Welkom for one of the better old car week-ends. Ty Terblanche

MARCH DEC SOUTH AFRICA TO COME ALIVE WITH THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF 1930 s GRAND PRIX CARS In November 2018, South Africa will come alive to the sights and sounds of a grid full of 1930's Grand Prix cars for the first time in nearly 80 years. The occasion is the South African Historic Grand Prix Festival which is being organised as a celebration of the iconic racers that originally participated in the South African Grands Prix in the 1930s. In this era, the South African GP took place at the Prince George Race track in East London between 1934 and These races were supported by two further events, the Grosvenor GP in Cape Town and the Rand GP in Johannesburg, the trio of events creating a mini 'Winter Series' for European and British racing drivers of the day. The UK organiser of the event, Speedstream Events, has undertaken considerable research to identify and trace as many of the original cars that participated in the South African events during the 1930's. The response has been tremendously positive, with several thrilling cars already committed to participating, including the Maserati 8CM with which Whitney Straight won the inaugural 1934 Grand Prix, the ERA which won the 1937 Grand Prix and the Riley Ulster Imp which finished second in the same event Maserati 8CM (Photo Dave Adams)

MARCH DEC ERA R4A (Photo: Alan Cox) 1934 Riley Ulster Imp (Photo: Peter McFadyen) Other cars the organisers expect entries from include Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Talbot, Frazer Nash, Aston Martin, MG, Railton, Plymouth as well further ERAs, Maserati and Rileys. Billed as a once in a lifetime experience for the owners, the South African Historic Grand Prix Festival will comprise of three elements taking place between the 25th November and the 2nd December The first leg, on the 25th November, is a commemorative race at the East London Grand Prix Circuit combined with a parade around the original 11-mile long Prince George race circuit. This will present a fantastic opportunity for vintage car and Grand Prix enthusiasts to see these cars being driven in anger in the country for the first time in 80 years. The Festival then moves on to a private tour (from November) for the road going Grand Prix cars, where they will drive some of South Africa s most scenic and exhilarating roads between East London and the Western Cape. The event will culminate in a two-day Grand Prix Garden Party close to Cape Town. This element will see the Grand Prix cars on display as well as being demonstrated, providing a further opportunity for the public to interact with the cars and owners in celebration of South Africa's proud history of hosting Grand Prix racing. The venue for this element will be confirmed in due course. The Grand Prix Garden Party will be set in a high-end venue and offer ticket holders the opportunity

DEC 2017 MARCH 1 17 to get up close to the cars in a relaxed environment. There will also be a limited number of VIP hospitality tickets available in the Drivers Club hospitality at both the East London race event and the Cape Garden Party which will provide a unique opportunity to mingle with the owners of the GP cars, as well as network with celebrities, motorsport heroes and like-minded enthusiasts. While preference will be given to entries where cars have authentic South African Grand Prix history, the By Invitation Only event is also open to owners of age related Grand Prix cars who may wish to participate in this once-off experience. Total entries are limited to 25 cars. More information can be found on / Facebook - SA Historic Grand Prix Festival.
