SVRA Spring Vintage Classic Sebring International Raceway, FL February 28-March 3, 2013 story by Pam Shatraw #38 Alan Sevadjian, 1969 Chevy. photo by Larry VanScoy From , Sebring was a US Army Air Forces training base where pilots learned to fly B-17s. After the war, Alec Ulmann saw potential in the runways to stage a sports car endurance race, similar to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sebring s first race was held on New Year s Eve of The course is 3.74 miles long, about the same as the original circuit but much shorter than the 5.2-mile circuit of the late 1950s. It is a 17-turn road course with long straights, several high-speed corners, and slower 48 April 2013 Victory Lane corners which are very technical. Many of the turns and points along the track are named for early teams and drivers. There is very little elevation change and little camber on the surface of the track, providing a challenging track for drivers, particularly when it rains. Sebring is renowned for its rough surface. The course still runs on old sections of World War II-era landing fields that were constructed of concrete sections with large seams. The transitions between sections are quite rough. Much of the track has intentionally been left with its original concrete runway surface. SVRA s Spring Vintage Classic at Sebring, was the club s first full event under the leadership of Tony Parella and the SVRA team, and there were lots of new race opportunities and attractions added to the show. The DOP/TOP driving training sessions were implemented for the first time. A 60th Anniversary birthday party was held. The Trans-Am group contracted to run at numerous events were there in numbers,
paddocked together. One of the bravest things attempted over the weekend was a Le Mans-style start of the Saturday Vintage Classic Enduro. The SVRA Team is working diligently and creatively to create and deliver great racing events. Thursday was an optional test day, and tech was offered throughout. Thursday also was the launch of the SVRA DOP/TOP driving school in the morning, with the classroom session in the tower. Thursday afternoon was the traditional Sebring Circle of Speed Drive to Town. Numerous race cars left the track behind a police escort and drove to city center of Sebring, where they were parked around a city center plaza in the historic section of town. The streets were closed off for pedestrian traffic, and there was plenty of people and interest. Sebring really embraces the vintage cars, and there was food and merchandise vendors, music, and people galore. The local merchants had their doors wide open and merchandise displayed on tables around the square. The cars, and their owners, were surrounded by interested people and race fans. I wait for this event every year, this is the start of my racing season, said Brad Neather, a season ticket holder at Sebring. My wife and kids meet me, and we have an early dinner and walk around the cars. The car owners are friendly and enjoy sharing the history of their cars, the kids love the music in the park and some of the treats that are handed out especially the race stickers. We look forward to this every year. Victory Lane April

Meanwhile, a sluggish start had slowed Todd Treffert, 1973 Porsche 911, who slipped far back in the pack I could not be more proud of our SVRA team. We had a record entry for this event. The Spring Vintage Classic featured our first SVRA Driving Experience for street cars, the Corral, and our first modified Le Mans start for the enduro. The team did a great job providing our guests a quality, fun event. Tony Parella, SVRA President early in the race and had to chase down the leaders. By Lap 17, Treffert had done so, taking the lead and then holding it for the rest of the race, with 2nd place honors going to the team of John Deford and Mark Bunting, 1973 Porsche 911. Sunday morning started off with a continental breakfast at the Hall of Legends #9 John Delane, 1965 Brabham BT18. patio provided by SVRA. Free food and early morning coffee always is appreciated by racing teams, especially the crews. After the morning hardship session, Group 2 and 5 was called to the grid. The brisk morning and late night may have kept some of this group out of the running. Hobie Buppert, in his 1969 Lola T70MKIII, came under the checkers first in the 9-lap race. John Delane, in his 1965 Brabham BT18, crossed the line in second. James Cullen, 1968 Ford GT40, finished third and Mike Taradash brought his 1971 Lotus 69FF around to finish fourth. The session was run without incident. The paddock was full for the Group 8 Race 2. This 9-lap race was led start to finish by Todd Treffert, in his 1973 Porsche 911. John Deford, 1973 Porsche 914/6, could not overcome the 700cc disparity between his engine and Treffert s engine and could not get around Treffert, finishing second. Lee Glannone finished third in his 1966 Porsche 911. Brenda Johnson, 1971 Porsche 914/6, saw a lot of action early on, dropping back a couple of spots then regaining the position, finishing mid-pack. The George Calfo/Bruce Ellsworth 1970 Porsche 911, meanwhile, saw a steady rise through the pack for a 12th place finish. Group 10 brought together the big cars, some of which had engine sizes of 6000cc, with the winning one being a 1975 Dekon Monza driven by Toby Bean. Jeff Bernatovich, behind the wheel of his 1990 Chevrolet, had the pole but was passed by Bean on Lap 3 and eventually finished second. Steve Fox, driving his C2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, had an eventful race, with numerous passes on his way to finishing fourth overall. Stephen Papalas 1993 Lumina also had a very active race full of dicing and finished mid-pack. Race 2 for Group 6 started at 9:45 a.m. with over two dozen cars taking the green flag. Alan Sevadjian, 1969 Chevrolet, finished first and ran flag-to-flag. Leo Voyazides, 1966 Shelby Mustang 350, ran a smooth race but was not ever able to catch Sevadjian and finished second. The rest of the action on the race grid was hectic, full of early exchanges and last lap passes. Fritz Seidel, 1967 Porsche 911S, and Charles Harris, 1973 Porsche 911 RSR diced back and #5 Dawn Fisher, 1972 Lotus Super 7; #34 George Balbach, 1961 Porsche 356. forth and changed positions repeatedly during the last four laps of the race. Harris finished third and Seidel finished fourth. A last lap pass by Alan Friedman, 1973 Porsche 911, of Max Hellman, 1971 Jaguar XKE, ended their race in the 13th and 14th positions respectively. Andre Herke, in his 1961 Porsche 356, jumped to a 2nd place position by Lap 2 of the Group 1, 3 and 4 Race 2. Herke Victory Lane April
Friday at the track was a full day of practice and qualifying for the seven SVRA race groups. After qualifying sessions ended, the Klub Sport Challenge was called to grid. About 25 Porsches with engines ranging from cc showed up for the first feature race of the Sebring Vintage Classic race weekend. This group has some great racing, and some predictable finishers. Size does not always matter, but in this race is certainly helped. Frank Beck, 1992 Porsche 911RS, was the clear leader in this group. Beck started on the pole. Lap one saw Carlo Falcone, 1970 Porsche 914/6 jump to the lead but for only one lap. Fritz Seidel 1967 Porsche 911S had the lead for the second thru fifth laps, but retired on the sixth. Beck regained the lead on lap six keeping Falcone in his mirrors finished first overall. A last lap pass of Falcone, by John Deford, 1973 Porsche 914/6 put him in second and Falcone in third. Dale Erwin, 1958 Porsche 356 had a spirited drive throughout the race, fluctuating ten or more positions throughout the session. 50 April 2013 Victory Lane Erwins mirrors were constantly full, he was passed and he re-passed multiple times through the race. Next was the 90-minute Night Enduro under the lights. The winning car a 2006 Porsche RS Spyder driven by Christian Zugel finished first after 37 laps and set the fastest lap at 1: A first lap pass by Zugel of William Binnie made way for the Zugel win. Binnie in his Ferrari F430 GTC finished second overall completing 33 laps. Charles Harris in his Porsche 911 RSR finished 31 laps for the third place overall win. The Alan Sevadjian team in the 1971 saw opportunity in the beginning of the race, jumping out to a third place position on the first lap... but that was not to stick, as they retired from the race after the sixth lap. Carlo Falcone in his 1970 Porsche and Lee Glannane in his 1966 Porsche 911 put on a remarkable show. They diced with each other throughout the race. Giannone finished fourth with 29 laps and Falcone finished sixth with 25 laps. Damn the weather people. The weather predictions for Saturday had been for 30, overcast and a potential of rain. The day turned out to be sunny, brisk and in the low 50s. When I arrived at the track, I followed a 1950s into the track and watched as it joined the 60th A n n i v e r s a r y o f Corral. At lunch, the celebration continued with noontime laps on the famous track. It was as much fun to watch as it was to hear. #99 Vince Vaccaro, 1972 Alfa Romeo GTV; #81 Rob Mocas, 1967 Alfa Romeo GTV. #127 David Ritter, 1969 Lola T70 Mk III. Saturday was another day of qualifying and Race 1 for all SVRA groups. Because of the busy schedule including the enduros and the Trans-Am Series, some of the SVRA Group 2 races were held Saturday afternoon. The first group called to the grid for a Saturday afternoon Race 2 was Group 7 and Formula Libre. Well acquainted with the podium is Robert Blain in his 1967 Lola T70 Spyder. That car and Robert are a fine tuned match and frequently are found in first place. There was a lot of action going on in Robert s mirrors. Rob Lima in his 1978 Lola was comfortably in second until Lap 5 when he was passed by Roy Walzer in his 1970 Chevron. Walzer maintained the 2nd place position until retiring on Lap 6. Ferrell Preston, in his 1966 McLaren M1B, and Waltzer had been dicing until Waltzer s retirement. Lima claimed the second position with Preston coming in third. Mitchell Eitel, 1979 Argo, shook things up further back in the pack with early passing resulting in a mid pack position only to retire on the 6th lap. It was good racing to watch. Up next was Race 2 for Group 11 and 9/F1. Toby Bean, in his 1990 Intrepid was the only one to retire after the start and that was due to a mechanical problem. George Robinson took the lead early in his 2007 Lola and kept it thru the end of the race. David Porter, who had the pole in his 2007 Pescarolo finished the race in second. Mark Congleton, 1994 Porsche and David Rankin, 1997 Chevrolet Camaro duked it out, back and fourth, thru the nine laps finishing eleventh and twelfth. After the race, everyone went over to the Awards Banquet at the Chateau Elan Hotel. Saturday evening the 60-minute Vintage/ Classic Enduro was held. This enduro invited cars from Groups 1,2,3,4, 5A and 8 to participate. The start of this race was set up as a modified LeMans start. The teams seemed to enjoy it, and there were no casualties. John Cloud, 1998 Ford Mustang, had started 7th but quickly moved up the field to grab the lead and hold it for three laps, but he was overtaken on Lap 6 by the 1961 Porsche 356 #59 Joh Hoover, 1975 Porsche 914/6; #64 Ron Pawley, 1993 Toyota Supra _victory_lane_April_13.indd 50 3/26/13 2:16:05 PM
The Spring Vintage Classic weekend provided a great start to our 2013 season. I can t wait to hear what our members think after our Rockingham event. Tony Parella, SVRA President #530 Leo Voyazides, 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350. started in sixth, and held the second spot to the finish, as Paul Swanson, behind the wheel of the 1958 Porsche Speedster, ran from pole-to-checker in the lead. The real dicing went on between Bob Wechsler, 1957 photo by MArtin Spetz #117 Mike Taradesh, 1971 Lotus 69FF., and Tony Parella, A second lap pass of Perella by Wechsler started the back and forth racing. On Lap 3, Parella repassed Wechsler, Weschsler repassed Parella but on Lap 8 of the 9-lap race and the two of them went on to finish sixth and seventh, respectively. Immediately after that race had conclued, opening ceremonies began for the Historic G T / G T P / A L M S Enduro, a 90-minute race that included two pit stops. Perhaps it was the warming day, perhaps it was the people settling in the stands which led to 30 cars showing up on the grid. The start of this race was one of the most dynamic starts ever witnessed, as the acceleration reminded me of a NASCAR race. The Phil Lasco/Don Soenen team was in the wrong place and dropped 16 positions in their 2000 Ford Mustang on the first lap, but studiously regained them over the course and netted themselves a 3rd place finish overall. The team of George Robinson and Wally Dallenbach, driving a 2007 Lola B0718, finished first overall with 38 laps. The Leo Voyazides/Gary Moore team, driving one of the oldest cars on the grid (a 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350), finished mid-pack on the 30th lap. The race was full of action, and the pit stops, when timed correctly, definitely worked in a team s favor. It was fun to watch and, at times, had many race fans on their feet in the grandstands or pressing against the fence for a better sightline. #23 Brenda Johnson, 1971 Porsche 914/6. Sebring was a great start for the new team in charge of SVRA. Now it s on to The Rock, as SVRA heads north to North Carolina for a weekend at Rockingham Speedway. KLUB SPORT CHALLENGE 1 3.0L F.
