These suspension components are particularly recommended if you regularly tow or carry heavy loads. These bushes have a high capacity to bear tension and compression and have been tested at temperatures from -100 C to C. 67 Land Rover Alloy Frames The frame is the heart of every bicycle and at Land Rover bikes we always insist state of the art premium materials and processes are used. Take Alloy as an example, 2 series, 6 series and 7 series are all readily available, but for the ultimate in strength to weight ratio there is only one choice. Now for some science! 1 The 7 series and 6 series referred to are the international alloy designations. There are systems in use in many countries that number their alloys differently. 2 In this case a 7 series alloy has, as its main alloying component, Zinc. A 6 series alloy has as its main alloying components, Magnesium and Silicon. 3 The heat treatment or T number which is put after the main series number relates to the type of heat treatment. T4 is heat treated (solution heat treatment) then quenched, then naturally aged. T6 is heat treated then artificially aged (slow cooling process in the oven, usually for 24H) 4 Most alloy codes are 4 digit numbers the 2nd 3rd and 4th digits only serve to indicate that there is different percentages of alloying components in the metal. They just show that the alloys are of the same series but different mixes of material. 5 Most bike frames are made from 7005 alloy if its 7 series and 6061 if it is 6 series. 6 The type of heat treatment and the artificial `aging` process have a massive impact on the final physical properties of the alloy. LAND ROVER BIKES 7 The following are typical mechanical properties of the two alloys mentioned % proof (stress) = 275 MPa Tensile strength = 310 MPa % proof (stress) =345 MPa Tensile strength = 395 MPa As a matter of interest the tensile strength of some other 6 and 7 series alloys are noted as below 7 series 6 series 7004 = 400 MPa 6063 = 240 MPa 7009 = 535 MPa 6061 = 310 MPa 7039 = 415 MPa 6151 = 330 MPa As can be seen this shows that in general terms 7 series alloys are stronger than 6 series alloys by the most popular lay definition of tensile strength. There is a cost implication to using 7 series alloy as it is more expensive to heat treat it. The weight of a frame depends on the amount of material; there is no appreciable difference in the density of 6 and 7 series alloy. The difference in weight comes from being able to use less of the stronger material. Summary If identical frames were made of 6 and 7 series alloys they would weigh the same but the 7 series one would be stronger. If identical frames were made of 6 and 7 series alloys and made to the same tensile strength the 7 series would need less material and therefore be lighter. 65
