9 South African Road Safety South Africa has one of the highest per capita road fatalities statistics in the world 35 People die every day on our roads Between 2011 to 2016 South African motor vehicle population increased by around 2 million vehicles There are currently 11,897,737 registered vehicles on our roads Almost 8 Million of these are uninsured ( Between 65% to 75%)

12 Tyres: Why the Fuss? At 120 km/h, the only part of your car touching the road are your four tyres The area of tyre in contact with the road surface is about the size of your palm Four functions of tyres: 1. Supporting your car - the four tyres and the air inside them support all the weight of you, your passengers, your car and your luggage 2. Absorbing road shocks - the air or nitrogen in the tyres act as a spring and this dramatically increases your comfort. 3. Traction and braking - thanks to the tyres, you can drive... and stop. 4. Steering

13 Tyres: Why the Fuss? Tyres = primary guarantee of safe and comfortable ride Poor Tyres: 1. Reduced performance 2. Increase stopping distance 3. Increased chance of skidding 4. Underinflated tyres = increased fuel consumption and CO2 emission

14 Tyres: Knowing The Basics A new car tyre begins life with approximately 8mm of tread SA legal tread depth is 1,0 mm - Europe is 1,6 mm Probably wise to change tyres at 3mm Independent research at MIRA LTD shows that tyres with 3mm of tread provide on average 25% better performance than those at 1.6mm

15 Tyres: Making them Last Inflation pressure Tyre pressures need to be adjusted to match the vehicles weight and loads

16 Tyres: Making them Last Alignment Wheels that are not properly aligned will place additional strain and wear on one part of the tyre, leading to premature replacement

17 Tyres: Making them Last How you drive Hard braking and acceleration are bad for all aspects of your car. As the only point of contact with the tar, your tyres take the brunt of the abuse.
