15 Course Description: This course covers basic electrical theory, wiring diagrams, test equipment, and diagnosis, repair, and replacement of batteries, starters, and alternators. Topics include Ohms Law, circuit construction, wiring diagrams, circuit testing, and basic troubleshooting. Course Objectives: After completion, students should demonstrate basic skills in: reading wiring diagrams, diagnose, test, and repair basic wiring, battery, starting, charging, and electrical concerns. 20 Since this course is preparatory to entering the automotive service industry, job attitude, neatness, promptness and care of equipment will be considered part of the final grade. The final grade on these items will be determined by the instructor and based upon accepted industry standards. STUDENT GRADE POINT AVERAGE Students will be graded according to the following grade point system.
21 FOR A GRADE OF "B": Complete all written test with an average of 85% to 92%. Attend 90% of all scheduled class/lab hours. (100 / 112 Hours) Complete all lab/shop work in a manner as would be determined VERY GOOD in an actual shop. GRADING FOR A GRADE OF "A": Complete all written tests with an average of 93% to 100%. Attend 95% of all scheduled class/lab hours. (106/112 hours) Complete all lab/shop work in a manner as would be determined EXCELLENT in an actual shop.
22 FOR A GRADE OF "C": Complete all written tests with an average of 77% to 84%. Attend at least 80% of scheduled class/lab hours. (Attend at least 90/ 112 hours) Complete all lab/shop work in a manner as would be determined SATISFACTORY in an actual repair shop. FOR A GRADE OF "D": Complete all written tests with an average of 70% to 76%. Attend at least 80% of scheduled class/lab hours. (Attend at least 90/ 112 hours) Complete all lab/shop work in a manner as would be determined POOR in an actual repair shop. Less than 90 hours 80% automatically fails.

24 Automotive Department Student Dress Code, Student Conduct and Expectations As a participant in the Transport Systems Technology division of CPCC, and BMW ADP my classes include participation in hands-on activities in a lab setting. These labs can be in a large shop or small lab facility. In order to protect myself and others from harm, I agree to participate in those labs in a safe and professional manner.
25 Safety Glasses Students must wear approved, non-tinted Safety Glasses at all times while in the lab. At all times means from the moment I enter the lab until I leave. This includes any time working, not working, referencing a computer, washing hands, etc. If I am found to not be wearing my safety glasses appropriately (covering my eyes), you will face the following consequences: First offense Verbal warning from the instructor Second offense The student will be excluded from that lab for the remainder of the lab and Sent Home and no credit for the day will be given. Any offenses while underneath a vehicle skip automatically to the next highest penalty. Sent Home Please understand that there are no exceptions from the above penalties. In addition, warnings and exclusions can and will be made by any member of the CPCC faculty, staff, lab facilitators, Division Director, etc., and carry the same weight.
26 Dress/Appearance/Hygiene Dress: All students are required to wear their dealer sponsored uniform to school each day. All shirts must be clean and tucked in. All students not sponsored by a Dealer will wear BMW ADP T-Shirts from the school store. Dark colored work-style pants are recommended or proper fitting jeans that meet the following requirements (length above the shoes, jeans above the hip with belt). No oversized jeans will be permitted. Shorts are not allowed. No keys, chains or wallets hanging out of pockets. Rips and tears must be mended in a timely manner. All belts must be of the type that does not have an exposed buckle. Shoes: Students must wear leather work boots/shoes. We highly recommend steel toes and oil resistant soles. No sneakers, tennis shoes, open toed shoes, or dress shoes are permitted. Jewelry: Facial jewelry of any type is NOT permitted. This includes ear, nose, lip, eyebrow, cheek rings, studs, etc. Also prohibited are necklaces, rings (only one wedding ring permitted), or bracelets of any kind as these items may pose a safety hazard. It is strongly recommended that you not wear a wristwatch. Hats: Hats are permitted in the shop area only! If a hat has a bill, it must be worn with it facing forward. (skullies or beanies are not permitted) Hair: Hair must be well groomed and not constitute a safety hazard. Facial hair must be well groomed and not constitute a safety hazard. Hygiene: Good personal hygiene must be maintained at all times. Other appearance issues not directly covered by these rules will be considered on a case-bycase basis. CPCC staff will decide what is professional in appearance and what is not.
27 Attendance Attendance: Students are expected to be present in class. Students that do not attend 80% of the classes will automatically receive a failing grade. Illness-Emergency Reporting Procedures: All students must notify the Instructor whenever he/she will be absent and state the reason for the absence. If the Instructor cannot be reached, leave a voice mail or . A MESSAGE MUST BE RECEIVED or points will be removed from your daily grade. Student is still responsible for all worked missed. Tardiness: Tardiness in any manner will not be tolerated. Students are expected to be in class on time (5 minutes early) both in the morning and after lunch. Class begins at exactly the scheduled time. Anyone over 15 minutes late is absent. Three unexcused tardies will result in a 3 page paper. 5 Tardies and the student will automatically fail the course. Students whom are assigned papers without completion will fail the course. Do Not Leave Early: Students whom leave early will be penalized with a failing grade for the day and a tardy will be recorded in the student s attendance record.
28 Participation/Behavior Participation: Students are to participate in all areas of instruction to the fullest extent of their ability. Organization: Students are expected to be organized with your course work, vehicle repairs and lab tasks. This includes looking up repair instructions, placing parts and tools in an organized manor, nothing on the floor unless instructor permission was granted, cleaning spills promptly etc. Assignments: All assignments will be graded on both neatness and content. Deadlines are not meant to be broken. Deadline extensions will only be granted in the event of a major situation that was out of the student s control. Prepared: Students not prepared for class/ lab with task books, course books, homework or other course materials will be penalized by losing class and/or lab points. Tools: Students without tools go home. NO EXCEPTIONS. Housekeeping: All students are expected to clean up and put away all tools and equipment used during class or lab before leaving. Housekeeping is very important and will be part of your grade.
29 Student Responsibility Responsibility: Whenever you are unsure about anything ask your instructor! It is your responsibility to make sure that no physical damage occurs to any vehicle that you are working on or driving. Students are responsible for their actions! Vehicle accidents and broken parts: If you break something tell either John Garcia, Brian McMillan or Joe Carbon so we can order the parts. Students will be required to fill out a parts order form at the time of the incident. VIN numbers MUST be used with ETK in order to correctly order said parts. A BMW ADP parts and tools cover letter and parts printout are required to maintain accuracy for all parts and tool ordering. Safety glasses and student tools are mandatory in all shop/lab areas, no exceptions.

31 Permitted Vehicles to Work On Working on personal vehicles in class is a student privilege not a right. All student/ faculty vehicles brought into the main lab will have a SHOP KEY work order filled out and visible on windshield. This requires instructor approval and prior knowledge of the work to be performed. Proof of ownership is provided before the vehicle is brought into the shop in the way of title or registration. Parents whom are listed as the owners of student vehicles are permitted as long as the parent comes into the school and signs off on the repair order that said vehicle is the students vehicle. They will be required to provide a driver s license and proof of ownership per vehicle.
32 Shop Key Repair Orders Login using the provided credentials Use the drop down menu on the left to access the link Quotes Then click Quote on the top left to create a new quote. Once created save the quote to the database by clicking save (lower right of document). Print and have the owner sign. Bring the car in the shop and place the R.O. on windshield.
33 All vehicles brought into the facility must meet one of the two following requirements. The vehicle belongs to a faculty member and proof of ownership was provided. The vehicle requires work that fits the curriculum being taught. The situation and repair request was discussed and agreed to by the instructor. 34 BMW ADP Vehicle Etiquette Repair Instructions: We do not work on cars without repair instructions unless instructor permission was granted. Battery Tending: If you are working with the door open, key on, or on anything consuming battery power, put a Battery Charger on the car. Paint and Body Consideration: If you open a hood put fender covers on the car. They are in the trunk of a car somewhere. Instructors are not responsible for telling students which car has fender covers in it. Vehicle Log Books: All vehicle usage MUST be recorded in the vehicle log book.
35 BMW ADP Vehicle Etiquette Where are the keys: Keys are signed out on the key box sign out sheet and returned when said vehicle is completed or class is over. All keys must be accounted for before class will be dismissed. Parking cars Outside: Cars parked outside must have all windows up including the top if it s a convertible. Doors must be locked and the radio left at a reasonable listening level. EVERYONE PARTICIPATES IN MOVING CARS FROM SHOP TO PARKING AND PATKING TO SHOP. Vehicle Care: ALL VEHICLES WILL BE WORKED ON AND CARED FOR AS THOUGH THEY ARE FERRARI S. Washing our program cars are part of maintaining them. This is typically done at the end of the semester and before special events. ALL WILL PARTICIPATE.
36 Vehicles not maintained by the program but being worked on: Repair Instructions: We do not work on cars without repair instructions unless instructor permission was granted. 37 Driving You are not allowed or authorized to drive school loaned BMW vehicles except for the sole purpose of parking them outside and moving them inside. You are not allowed or authorized to drive faculty vehicles except for the sole purpose of parking them outside and moving them inside unless you have the written permission from the customer. All vehicles are to be driven cautiously with great respect for your peers and the vehicles. Lab Supervision All lab work MUST be accompanied by an instructor. Students caught in a lab working while instructors are tending to other activities and that student/s will forfeit their shop privileges and endure written assignments.
38 Disrespectful Behavior: Talking, whispering, sleeping, laying your head on the desk, passing notes, etc. while the instructor is teaching is disrespectful behavior and will not be tolerated. One warning will be given; a second violation will result in immediate dismissal from the class; third violation will result in dismissal from the program. Instructors/Staff/Guests: All persons must be treated with full courtesy and respect. Students, during any association with the instructional staff and/or guests, shall refer to them as Sir or Ma am as the case may be. Students are expected to sit straight in their seats and give instructors their undivided attention while in class. Language: Profanity of any kind will not be tolerated. BMW ADP students are curse free and will find alternative adjectives to use in place of derogatory verbiage. Cheating: Cheating in any manner WILL NOT be tolerated. Any student caught cheating or allowing or assisting in cheating, will be immediately dismissed from the program by the Instructor. Cell Phones: Pagers, cell phones, lap tops or other electronic devices are not to be used in class. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
39 Food/Tobacco/Alcohol/Drugs/Medications: No tobacco products usage is allowed inside any college building at any time. Beginning on January 2, 2010, CPCC will become a 100% tobacco-free college. This important policy change applies at all times as outlined below: All college property on all campuses All buildings, grounds, and parking lots All students, employees, visitors All forms of tobacco (including smokeless tobacco) The unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, or use of illegal drugs presents a hazard to students, employees, and property and is not permitted at any property in use by the College or while participating in a co-op. I will also pass a drug test from a perspective employer and/or the college. Failing the drug test is grounds for dismissal from the program. Any student who violates this policy is subject to disciplinary action. Refer to CPCC s Policy and Procedures No.7.01 at drug-free-college for complete details. Eating or drinking in classrooms is with permission of instructor only; there will be no eating or drinking in shop or lab or lab areas. No alcohol is permitted on campus. If this occurs it will result in immediate dismissal from the program. No student is to be on campus under the influence of alcohol or with the odor of alcohol on or about them.
40 TRN 120 ST051 Body Electronics I Reckless Driving: Driving is a privilege and one that our students must retain in good standings. Students caught driving recklessly in the CPCC parking lot or on any road by a CPCC enforcement officer or instructor and penalties will be awarded. Parking: The area in front of the bay doors are not for students to park. Those spots are designated for our BMW program vehicles. Breaks: Students are not permitted to gather in the hallways or other areas of the building. During breaks students are allowed in the break areas, restrooms, or outside. Students are not to block walkways or doorways. Weapons: No weapons of any sort are allowed in any CPCC building at any campus. Lethal weapons found to be in a student possession in any CPCC building and law officials will be notified and charged as they seem fit. Pocket knives found on students in the Levine buildings will be confiscated and criminal charges may be brought against you. Pocket knives in the Joe Hendrick Center are permitted as long as they are used for trade purposes in a safe and non-threatening manor to yourself or others. Vandalizing school property: Any vandalization of property (soda machines included) will not be tolerated and legal matters may be taken up against you. We are All Adults: Treat our bathrooms here as you would at home. PLEASE DO YOUR PART TO KEEP OUR BATHROOMS CLEAN!!!!!
41 Refer to CPCC Student Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures and/or CPCC s Policies and Procedures at students for the College s expectations of its students. Any student not following these guidelines will be dismissed from class and attendance credit for that day will not be given. All violations of this document may encumber additional written assignments designed to influence the student to correct said issues as well as a restriction from working on personal vehicles which is a privelage. Multiple issues may result in program termination. After a student has been warned or dismissed from class three times he or she will be dropped from the program. No excuses will be considered
42 Transportation System Technology Curriculum Program Procedures: Eligible Vehicles, Service Work, Work Orders, Safety, Cash Receipts, and Vehicle Storage/Disposal
43 Eligible service vehicles include Manufacture partners loaned/donated vehicles (BMW, GM, Honda, CAT ) Current TST CPCC students vehicles Current CPCC fulltime or part-time employees vehicles These are limited to one vehicle per employee or student on premises at any given time Vehicles must be removed by May 15 of each year or they will be towed 2000 year models or later for AUT
44 TST Vehicle Service Work All live work done in the TST shops or classrooms must assist students in meeting course objectives as outlined in the applicable course syllabus. Instructor supervised student labor is provided at no charge. The instructor responsible for the class will decide if specific jobs will help enrolled students to meet course objectives. All live work appointments will be made in advance with the instructor. All live work must be supervised by a CPCC instructor.
45 Work Orders Each vehicle being serviced must have a completed, accurate work order visible at all times. Work orders must include, but are not limited to: Proof of ownership (either vehicle registration or title) VIN # Owner s signature Three copies of the work order are required for: Department file which may be stored electronically (Shop Keys) Owner Instructor Vehicle owner is responsible for purchasing and delivery of all parts and supplies used for service and repairs.
46 Safety/Security Each instructor is responsible for checking the safety and operability of tools and equipment prior to and during the course of the semester. Students are also told to inform the instructor if a tool or piece of equipment is not functioning properly. (This is done only after the student has received training on the safe use and operation of the tool or piece of equipment.) The defective tools/equipment is removed from service and either repaired replaced.
47 Safety/Security All working lab areas are marked with a MUST WEAR SAFETY GLASSES sign. Students and faculty in those areas must wear safety glasses. Any safety hazard will be reported to the instructor immediately. Floors will be kept clear of all liquids and tripping hazards. No equipment will be operated by students until they have received instruction on proper and safe operation of same equipment. Vehicle lifts must be secured with mechanical locks prior to working under vehicle
48 Safety/Security Jack stands will be used when jacking up a vehicle for service. Exhaust systems will be used anytime an engine is running in the lab. Use of tobacco is not permitted on any CPCC campus. Use of audio equipment is not permitted during class/lab hours. Students and faculty must follow OSHA rules concerning exposure to blood borne diseases. Proper disposal of automotive waste products, including hazardous wastes, is required.

50 Revenues No service fees will be assessed in any TST program area. Cash will never be accepted for repair supplies. Customers wishing to make donations to the Transport Systems Technology programs may do so by writing a check made payable to CPCC Foundation with a notation that the donation is for Transport Systems, and mailing it to: Central Piedmont Community College Foundation PO Box Charlotte, NC Or, the customer can take the check to the Cashier in Claytor 1104 for processing.

53 BMW NA Official BMW ADP PROGRAM STUDENT ACCEPTANCE REQUIREMENTS Each student registering for the ADP will be required to meet certain program requirements, such as: High School graduate or posses a GED Have not more than 2 current moving violations on their MVR and no DUI s within the last 10 years Have a valid driver s license Must be able to drive a standard shift transmission Must be eligible to work in the U.S.A. following completion of the course study. Must have clearly expressed an interest in working for a BMW or MINI dealership within the United States. Be drug free. Must be able to pass a drug test at any time and have no criminal record. Pass all collegiate entrance requirements set forth by CPCC
