Getting your driver license in Indiana is a smooth sailing process that only requires that you prepare slightly before embarking on the adventure. This is a process that will only take a small amount of your time; in fact, the guide is specifically organized towards ensuring that you are able to get through things as quickly as possible. Jam packed with information regarding everything from obtaining your learner permit, driver license, or ID card all the way to how to renew, replace, or change these items. We will make getting ready to drive on the friendly Indiana roads fast and easy. So, enjoy as we make life a bit less complicated. ALL DRIVERS You must also remember that the roads aren t always safe; therefore, it is in your best interest to fully prepare for whatever may come your way before you begin driving. When you begin driving, you not only take on the responsibility for your safety, but you also take on the responsibility of the safety of your passengers and all passengers in the vehicles around you. So, in order to best prepare yourself to take on that responsibility, it is always wise to first obtain your learner s permit to be able to learn to drive properly. If you would like to understand how to obtain your learner s permit, please read the steps below: Vision Exam Getting your vision checked before you obtain your learner s permit or driver s license is essential to ensure that you are physically capable of driving. The exam is very straight forward and will only require that you have a minimum vision of 20/40. Otherwise, if you fail your vision exam, you will be required to get corrective lenses. It will state on your license whether you must drive while wearing corrective lenses, drive using outside rearview mirrors, and/or drive only during daylight hours on your license. If you have any questions regarding the vision screening test, please contact the Indiana BMV office through here. 5

Written Exam When it comes to obtaining your permit, at first, it may seem intimidating to take the exam, but once you understand how the process goes, it will be less frightening to you. You have the option to take the test in eleven different languages, depending on what you require. In order to prepare for the written exam, you need to review all information regarding driver safety, traffic laws, and all Connecticut laws. All the information you will need to study to prepare for the test can be found in the Indiana Driver s Manual, which you can read here. In the case that you fail the test, you have to wait 14 days before being allowed to retake it. However, if you fail the test three times you will be required to wait at least two months before being allowed to attempt to take the test once again. If your learner s permit expires during that time, you need to renew it before you become eligible to take the test again. TEEN DRIVERS If you re a teenager on the brink of entering adulthood, then, chances are you re currently dreaming of obtaining your driver s license. Well, we are here to help you to make that dream a reality! In each step moving towards obtaining your license, we will outline and help you to better understand each procedure you must complete. As a new driver, it is important that you carefully read through each step and fully understand how everything operates. This is to ensure that you avoid any complications, but also to be sure that you are well prepared to take on your responsibilities on the road. By completing these steps and obtaining your license, you will take those first steps towards proving you are a well prepared driver. So let s begin the journey! Step 1: Driver s Education In order to obtain your driver s license in Indiana as a teen younger than 18 years old, you need to first complete and obtain a Certificate of Driver Education by attending and passing a Driver s Education course. You can enroll into a Driver Education course before you turn 15 years old, but you need to be at least 15 years old in order to take the behind the wheel practice portion of the course. In order to obtain a Certificate of Driver Education you must fulfill these requirements: 30 hours of either classroom or online instruction. Six hours of behind the wheel practice with a driving instructor. You cannot take the behind the wheel portion of the course through an online Driver Education provider and will be required to attend an onsite driver training school 6

in order to fulfill the six hour behind the wheel practice portion and receive your Certificate of Driver Education. If your driver s education course participates in the BMV s driving test waiver program, and you have not failed any parts of the course with a grade 79 percent or lower, you are then eligible to take your driving test at the end of the driver s education course rather than at the BMV office. Therefore, this would no longer require you to take the driving test when you go to obtain your provisionary driver s license. You only have one chance to pass the driving test at the driver training school; otherwise, you will be required to take the driving test at the BMV office. You can find information regarding onsite Driver Training Schools in Indiana here and online Driver Education Providers here. If you would like a list of names of all certified driving instructors to supervise you during your behind the wheel practice, you can find it here. Step 2: Learner s permit The second step you must take after you ve finished your driver s education is obtaining your learner s permit. This permit will allow you to practice driving behind the wheel until you are officially ready to obtain your probationary driver s license and afterwards your full provisional driver s license. This process is fairly simple and will take only a small amount of preparation on your part. In order to move on to obtain your learner s permit, you will be required to fulfill the following requirements: Be 15 years old if you have completed a driver s education course. OR Be 16 years old if you have not completed a driver s education course. Follow the steps below to best prepare yourself and obtain your Learner s Permit: Documents Visit the BMV office with your parent or guardian. Provide proof of your Certificate of Driver Education if you are younger than 16 years old. Provide one proof of your identity. Valid Passport. Certificate of Birth. 7

Step 3: Probationary Driver License The last step before you are able to move towards obtaining your adult driver s license is obtaining your probationary driver s license. This license will allow you to continue practicing behind the wheel until you are officially ready to obtain your adult driver s license once you turn 18 years old. This process is fairly simple and will take only a small amount of preparation on your part. In order to move on to obtain your probationary driver s license you will be required to fulfill the following requirements: Complete 50 hours of behind the wheel practice, including 10 hours at night. You must also fill out the Log of Supervised Driving (Form 54706) and have it signed by your parent, guardian, or certified driving instructor. 8

Hold your learner s permit for at least 180 days before you apply for your probationary driver s license. Be at least 16 years old and 180 days (six months) if you have obtained a Certificate of Driver Education. OR Be at least 16 years old and 270 days (nine months) if you have not obtained a Certificate of Driver Education. Follow the steps below to best prepare yourself and obtain your Probationary License: Documents Hand over your learner s permit. In order to do this, you can either view your driving record with the Viewable Driver Record, which is free, or download and print your driving record by obtaining an Official Driver Record, which will cost you $4. You can do this by taking these steps: Go to mybmv Indiana. Log in to your account, or create an account. Once you do this, you will be able to view your driving record by either viewing your Viewable Driver Record or obtaining an Official Driver Record. If your record states Indefinite in the area for your reinstatement date, you need to either fulfill all requirements set by the BMV or contact the court that suspended your license in order to reinstate your license. The BMV will only accept reinstatement information directly sent from the court, you cannot send it personally to the BMV after you receive it from the court. For more information on what to do please contact the Indiana BMV at STEP 2: OBTAIN PROOF OF INSURANCE After you have accessed your driving record you need to provide electronic proof of your insurance by having your insurance provide send the Indiana BMV either a Proof of Insurance Required SR-50 Form or a Proof of Insurance Required SR-22 Form. If any policies reported on the submitted SR-22 form are canceled, your insurance provider will need to electronically notify the BMV by sending a SR-26 Form. STEP 3: PAY ALL REINSTATEMENT FEES Lastly, you need to pay all reinstatement fees stated on your driving record in order to reinstate your driver s license. You can pay either online, by mail, or through the phone by calling

If you decide to pay online, you will only have to go to Indiana mybmv and input your information. However, if you are paying your reinstatement fees by mail, you receive the instructions on how to do so through the reinstatement notice the Indiana BMV will send you. If you do not receive it or you have lost it, you can download the Reinstatement Fee Submission Form and mail the form and your payment to the following address: Bureau of Motor Vehicles P.O. Box 100 Winchester, IN If you have done all of the above steps and completed all the necessary requirements set by both the BMV office and the court that suspended your license, your driver s license will be reinstated immediately. However, if your license was physically taken from you during your suspension you will need to either visit a BMV office or obtain a replacement license online by following the steps shown in the Replacing Your License section. Tip There are many reasons you might have a suspended driver s license which, therefore, means there are multiple ways your driver s license can be suspended, it all depends on the situation. For more information on what to do in order to reinstate your driver s license please contact the Indiana BMV at

Getting a Indiana ID Card If you are not able to or not interested in obtaining a driver s license, it is then important that you consider getting an ID card instead. An ID card is essential because it is the easiest manner in which someone else can identify you when necessary, whether it be an authority figure, such as the police, or if you simply need to provide proof of your identity, such as at the BMV office. When it comes time to obtain your SecureID card the process is identical to that of obtaining your driver s license except you will not be required to take any exams or pay the price of the driver s license. The SecureID card will cost $11.50 only if you re not yet eligible to vote in the nearest election; otherwise your SecureID card is free of charge. If you would like to take a look at the steps to take in order to obtain your ID card, please take a look at the Getting Your First Indiana License section. If you are a military member you can also add a veteran indicator to your ID card if you visit the BMV office and provide proof of your discharge or separation. The service is free only if your ID card is expired and is eligible for renewal, otherwise you have to pay a $10 fee. Updating Your ID Card Information In the case that you need to update the information on your ID card, you are able to change your address or name by following the same steps as you would when changing the information on your driver s license. To see the steps you need to take to change your information please take a look at the Updating Your License Information section. Renewing/Replacing Your ID Card What if you would like to renew or replace your license? Well, the process for each is relatively simple, if you are applying to replace or renew your ID card, you will have the option of obtaining a SecureID card or continue to maintain a non-secureid card. Regardless of whether your ID card is Secure or non-secure, it will be valid for six years. When you need to renew or replace your ID card you have the option of doing so either online or in person. You also need to pay the fee of $11.50 if you are not yet eligible to vote in the next election. If you would like to renew or replace your ID card in person or would like to opt to change your non-secure ID card to a SecureID one, you will have to provide the following documents to verify your identity, Social Security number, legal presence, and residency: 27

Provide proof of your identity. Valid Passport U.S. Birth Certificate Citizenship certificate. Provide proof of your Social Security Number. Social Security Card W-2 Form Provide proof of your legal presence. Valid Passport I-94 Form Provide TWO proofs of your Indiana residency. Computer Generated Utility Bill Bank Statement If you are a military member, you will also be required to provide your current Military ID and proof of discharge or post deployment. However, in order to qualify to renew or replace your ID card online you have to meet the following requirements: You must be a U.S. citizen. You must not require any change of name, address, or any other information. Your license must not be expired for over 180 days. You must not be more than 12 months before your renewal date. You must have your photo on file at the BMV office. You must not have any restrictions on your ID card. You must not be changing your non-secureid for a SecureID card. If you meet these standards, you will be able to renew or replace your ID card online by taking the following steps: Visit the Indiana mybmv site. Input your information including: Full Name Birth Date 28

Address Social Security Number Pay the fee of $11.50, only required if you are not eligible to vote in the next election. Complete any additional steps necessary and once you re done you will have your new ID card will arrive in the mail within 10 business days. Tip Obtaining a SecureID card is required when you go to apply for a new ID card for the first time, however you can choose to maintain your Non-SecureID card if you are only renewing or replacing your ID card. Having a SecureID card is encouraged though as it proves that your identity has been verified by the Indiana BMV. 29

Vehicle Safety Tips Before getting behind the wheel, it s important that the vehicle is prepared for any trip. This means checking the safety features and making any needed changes to your vehicle to guarantee a safe drive. EMERGENCY KIT One of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include items such as water, extra batteries, rope, First Aid kit, matches and a whistle. During the winter months, it is also important to carry items such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves and socks, and a shovel. WINTER DRIVING One of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area that snows or is prone to ice. Consider these tips below to drive safely during the winter. Don t Rush! Roads are often covered in snow and ice after it snows. Instead of driving fast and risking an accident as you hurry to get to your destination, try leaving a few minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you to drive slower and avoid other dangerous drivers without being late for your appointment. Don t Panic If You Skid or Slip In the event that your vehicle does skid or slip while driving, make sure you do not panic and slam down on your brakes. Instead, apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning further out of control. Check Your Vehicle Before you leave your house make sure your vehicle s controls, brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze, and exhaust are all in working order. It is also important that you remove any ice and snow from your car before you begin driving; this prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive, or worse, flying off and hitting someone while in motion! 30

DRINKING AND DRIVING Every year thousands are killed as a result of drinking and driving. These events can be prevented; it only requires that you plan ahead of time by taking certain steps. Before you begin drinking, arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. If they also become intoxicated, it is important that you take a taxi. Never allow someone drunk to drive, instead take away their keys and call for alternative transportation. If you see someone who you suspect is drunk and showing signs of intoxication while driving such as making wide turns, weaving, swerving, braking erratically or turning abruptly call and contact authorities immediately. Also make sure to avoid them on the road to ensure your own safety. This could mean you pulling over until they are at a safe distance from your car. USING YOUR PHONE Driving while using your cell phone is one of the most dangerous things you can do. During those few seconds that your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. Make sure you don t text, use the internet on your phone, or receive calls while you drive to prevent accidents as best as possible. THINGS TO AVOID Driving isn t always a relaxing experience. There are certain actions that can be both an annoyance and dangerous to you while driving on the road. These things are often avoidable if you make sure to take the necessary steps towards preventing them, as well as stopping them after you discover them to be occurring. Car Accidents One way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this, regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are inflated and not worn out, and that the steering and suspensions are checked by a mechanic. Wasting Gas If you drive often, start looking for ways to save on those expensive trips to the pump. Saving on gas is something that is possible if you take a few steps towards ensuring you save some money in the long run. Some of the ways that you can start saving gas are turning off the air conditioning, not leaving your engine running or speeding above 60 mph. These things are preventable 31

and not necessary for you to drive, therefore you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste. Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly. You can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated, your engine is well-tuned, and that your octane level is the correct amount to your vehicle s needs. Aggressive Driving Aggressive driving and drivers are both things that should be avoided to prevent onroad aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is categorized as exhibiting behaviors such as aggressive tailgating, verbal or physical harassment towards another driver, or preventing another driver from merging or passing. If you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. When you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment, breathe, and continue moving. 32
