chapter 1 legal basis Requirements for telescope drivers Selection of drivers The requirements which have to be fulfilled so that someone can drive with a telescope forklift is regulated by the Commissioning of drivers of industrial trucks with a driver s seat and platform and the Principle operation of work equipment. Minimum age 18 years physically and mentally fit trained in driving proved ability to drive commissioned to drive The commission has to be given in writing! MARKMILLER supply of services page 3

Chapter 2 Structure and function Classification of telescopes Definitions The term "telescopes" is used frequently in everyday language. However, also the following terms are used: telescope loader, Teleforklift, Teleloader, Telescope, telescope forklift. It also happens that the associated name of the manufacturer is used to refer to the telescope forklift. During this training we will use the term telescope. Telescopes can be used either as industrial trucks, cranes or building equipment depending on the application. Definition DGUV regulation 68 Industrial trucks (telescopes) that are equipped with a lifting device can lift up loads itself, deposit, lift, stack, put into shelves and take them out again. DGUV Rule Loaders are machines with working facilities for releasing, lifting, transporting and pouring off of soil, rock and other materials, the transport of the cargo is mainly performed by moving the loader. MARKMILLER supply of services page 4

Chapter 2 Structure and function Examples for telescopes Rigid telescopes without support Use for particularly fast and many work cycles, for example, in goods handling, agriculture or waste disposal operation. Rigid telescopes with support These additional, front supports the telescopic machines have both a large load capacity and also a considerable range. Rotatable telescopes With the revolving upper structure loads can be precisely and accurately telescoped and pivoted in the desired direction. Heavy load telescopes These heavy-duty telescopes tools are applied when heavy loads have to be lifted and transported. They are utilized in mechanical engineering, aircraft construction, as well as in the concrete and steel industries. MARKMILLER supply of services page 5

Chapter 2 Structure and function Attachments / driver retaining systems Types of attachments There are a number of attachments, through which the applications of telescopes can be significantly expanded. These include not only pallet forks, working platforms and buckets, but also concrete buckets, bale clamps or hydraulic winches, roundwoodclings, crane hooks and grippers. This range leaves nearly no area of use unmentioned. The safety belt The safety belt has to be applied before starting the engine. If the safety belt is frayed, torn or damaged, it has to be replaced by a new one. The two-point belt is provided with a length adjustment. The seatbelt should fit snugly and be tightened in pelvic height, without pressing on the abdomen. MARKMILLER supply of services page 6

Chapter 3 General operation Boom control lever The boom control lever is a multifunctional operating device, which also has multiple operational functions. The potentiometer to retract and expand the boom, the steering keys for the hydraulic special equipment and the key to switch off the motor. Overload warning system This instrument informs the driver both visually and acoustically concerning the status of longitudinal stability of the machine upon lifting loads. Upon approaching the overlaod limit an acoustic warning signal is triggered. Attention if you hear the warning signal or see a fast flashing In this condition the machine is prone to tip over: even if it seems stable, there is no guarentee regarding its stability. MARKMILLER supply of services page 7

Chapter 3 General operation Frame balance switch The balance may only be done while the machine is standing still in the operational mode of TRAVELWORK before the supports are extended. Before lifting loads the frame of the machine always has to be balanced. Never use the balance steering if the boom is lifted (with or without load) or if only partially extended. The frame which is transversely tilted to the driving direction has also to be balanced while driving on slopes, even if the machine is not carrying any loads. The frame balance with a cylinder in the front axle is triggered with a flip switch (1) which interrupts the movement as soon as it is released; the tilting adjustment range amounts to ± 10. MARKMILLER supply of services page 8

Chapter 3 General operation Water level This instrument allows to control the balance of the machine while the frame is stabilized and the machine is used. The balance control is carried out by using the water level; the air bubble has to be centralized laterally. If the transverse gradient is changed more than 2 while driving, the machine has to be stopped and the frame balance has to be re-established. If the boom angle is more than 50 in relation to the frame, the frame balance cannot be selected any more. MARKMILLER supply of services page 9

Chapter 3 General operation Do not change the direction on sloping terrain and avoid to drive transversely to the slopes; the machine should be operated sideways above and below the slopes. CORRECT Do not operate the machine sideways or transversely on the slopes if the gradient exceeds 10. FALSE Never drive down the slopes in neutral gear! You might lose control and risk severe or even fatal injuries. CORRECT Always carry the load along the hillside! FALSE MARKMILLER supply of services page 10

chapter 4 Regular checks Regular inspections / tests by competent persons Who is a competent person? The employer s liability insurances stipulate that telescopes have to be checked by a competent person in intervals of maximum one year. A competent person is a person who as result of their training and experience, has sufficient knowledge to check the technical condition of a telescope according to the recognized rules of technology. Technical rules for operational safety (TRBS 1203) Seminars Training for competent persons are offered by MARKMILLER supply of services ( Telescopes have to be tested by a competent person if necessary, but at least once a year. Testmanual/inspection sticker The results of the tests have to be documented. Inspection books are suitable for this. The workers are reminded of the next inspection date by the inspection sticker. Inspection stickers should only be stuck on the machine if all shortcomings that have been found at the inspection have been fixed. MARKMILLER supply of services page 11

Chapter 5 Working with the load Load capacity / Load Actual load capacity The actual load capacity can differ from the rated capacity. The actual load capacity is determined by stability tests. This results in a chart or table, which must be attached as capacity plate clearly visible on the telescope. Example 1: LA (load distance) = max. 500 mm Boom mark: C Boom angle: 35º weight: 180 units Result: The load can also be lowered to the ground, if the boom is as much retracted, that the center of gravity of the load remains in the area right of line A. MARKMILLER supply of services page 12

Chapter 5 Working with the load 1. Introduce the machine as close as possible to the point of unloading at a right angle; pull the parking brake and turn the engine to idle. 2. If necessary, compensate for the frame and, if equipped, lower the supports until the front wheels are off the ground. Watch the framework compensation. 3. Set the mode selector to Work. 4. Lift the boom until the load is above the point of unloading, keep in mind that the boom angle and the telescopic function must not exceed the maximum values according to the load diagram, depending on the operating conditions (machine on tires or supports), und equipment that has been mounted. MARKMILLER supply of services page 13

Chapter 5 Working with the load 2. While falling from above material fills the bucket, lift the boom slowly and simultaneously tilt back the shovel until it stops. 3. Reverse the direction of travel of the machine and discharge the shovel on the truck. The shovel performance depends on how the driver manages the loading. The following rules have to be seen to: The process for filling the material using the machine for the extended cantilever can cause serious damage to its structure. As the material is loaded onto the truck, start the unloading if possible from the cabin side. If the material is largely homogeneous, it should be dumped from the maximum height, so that it can be distributed evenly. MARKMILLER supply of services page 14

chapter 6 Special operations Operation in high winds In high winds do not use the machine to lift loads that show a wide surface to the wind. If the windforce is more than 5 of the Beaufort-Scale (for the mainland) and the telescope shall be used to the max, this can mean a sail effect and result in the tipping of the machine. DO NOT USE the machine if the windforce reaches or exceeds the noted maximum value. Degree Beaufort description speed Land conditions scale calm Smoke rises vertically light air Smoke drift indicates wind direction light breeze Wind felt on exposed skin, wind vanes move gentle breeze Leaves and small twigs moving moderate breeze Dust and loose paper raised, small branches begin to move fresh breeze strong breeze high wind gale strong gale storm violent storm hurricane Branches of a moderate size move, small trees move Large branches in motion, whistling of overhead wires Whole trees in motion, effort needed to walk Twigs broken from trees, progress on foot is impeded Branches break off trees, roof tiles are blown away Trees are uprooted, structural damages on houses Widespread damages Severe widespread damages, catastrophy Protective measures against electric shock When working near electric overhead cables there is a risk of fatal electric shocks. Therefore, the measures envisaged by the authorities and the accident prevention rules, minimum distances are always to be observed. MARKMILLER supply of services page 15

chapter 6 Special operations Driving in public traffic Loading and unloading Close the rear window and the cabin door. Secure the machine by putting chocks in front and behind the wheels. Cover the exhaust pipe. Preparation for driving on the road The forks have to be secured before driving on the road! For driving on the road forks are attached with two bolts (1), which engage in the protection grill (2) and are held by two safety cotter pins (3) in its position.
