1 Instructions for Inspecting and reworking the welds on wheel brakes /1 Trailers with trailing arm axles 1. Identification of the brakes to be checked: Only brakes with the following details are affected: a) Wheel brake type: /1 see embossing on brake plate or type plate Seite 1 von 5

2 b) Affected batches see embossing on brake plate or or or or or or or or or If neither the type of wheel brake nor the batch identification applies to the trailer being inspected, the relevant VIN of the trailer must be notified to us with this finding. If both criteria apply, the following work instructions must be followed. Seite 2 von 5

3 2. Work instruction: 1) Secure trailer against rolling away 2) Remove one wheel stud and use an endoscope to check whether the backplate has been welded by the "faulty" automatic welder. In the case of "faulty" automatic welding, the final welding crater is always on the right side of the bracket, see red arrow => If there is NO endoscope available to check: - jack up and secure trailers according to manufacturer's instructions - Remove the wheel and brake hub. End crater of the weld RIGHT ATTENTION: All wheel brakes on the trailer must be checked. If the end craters are on the LEFT side, the welds are OK. - Reassemble the brake hub and retighten the flange nut (wrench size 32) to 280Nm if it has been removed. - Screw in the wheel bolt again and tighten according to the manufacturer's recommended torque. - Steps 3 to 13 can be skipped. If one or more brakes with the weld crater on the RIGHT have been found on the trailer, the following steps must be carried out on these brakes: Seite 3 von 5

4 3) If not already done, the trailer must be jacked up according to the manufacturer s instructions, so that it is safe to work on. 4) Unhook the Bowden cable, remove the shoe steady spring and remove the brake shoes. Here as an example view of the left front trailing arm after disassembly of the brake shoes. 5) Dismantling of the stub axle with bolted brake plate by loosening the four connecting screws M12x1,5x ) Installation of a new stub axle with brake plate. The hardened washers must be fitted under the screw heads. Tighten and retighten the M12x1,5x screws crosswise with 120Nm using a torque wrench. Then check the screw connection again with a torque wrench. 7) Mount brake shoes, insert shoe steady spring and hook the brake cable. 8) Clean bearing seat. Seite 4 von 5

5 9) Mount brake hub and tighten flange nut to 280Nm. 10) Fit dust cap. Fit wheel and tighten wheel bolts or nuts to the manufacturer s recommended figure. => Check after 50km tightening torque! => The operator must explicitly point out the necessary retightening of the wheel bolts. 11) After replacing the brake stub(s), the brake system is to be readjusted in accordance with Knott s specifications. 12) Mark the inspected or repaired axle by a red colour dot (colour spray) next to the axle type plate 13) Document the work: The VIN of the tested trailer must be entered on the attached form, as well as the findings as to whether or how many brakes were found and repaired with the weld in question. We require photos of each replaced brake/swingarm and photos of both re-welded welds of each brake for our verifications and for invoicing the work carried out.
