Light is produced in a light bulb when electrical current passes through a fine wire, causing it to glow. Around five percent of the electrical energy consumed is converted into light. OSRAM general lighting service (GLS) lamps are designed to achieve an average life of 1000 hours (as per the relevant standard). From the statistical point of view, this means that after 1000 hours of operation 50 percent of the lamps are still working. This applies of course only if they are operated at rated voltage (e.g. 230 V). Why do some light bulbs last longer than others? As far as the physics of the light bulb is concerned, there is a direct relationship between the light they give out and how long they last. If more voltage is pumped into the filament it will emit more light. However, this will considerably reduce the life of the lamp because the filament material will vaporise faster at this higher temperature, causing the filament to burn through sooner. Conversely, reducing the load on the filament in an ordinary light bulb will increase its service life. They are available in some interesting shapes: in standard (A shape) and round bulb with nipple (P shape), as twisted candles (BW shape) and as bent-tip candles (BA shape). Which incandescent lamps are best for mirror lighting, bearing in mind that ordinary light bulbs produce too much glare? In this case, it s best to use lamps with what are known as crown reflectors (DECOR SILBER or GOLD, A or P shapes).
