6 Going back to the beginning While the Massey Ferguson brand is well over half-way towards 100 years of innovation and engineering excellence, it is worth remembering that the company has its origins firmly in the 19th century. Born in 1798, Daniel Massey founded his factory in Canada, in his fiftieth year, with the Massey business joining Alanson Harris s company in 1891 to form Massey Harris. From that moment on, the introduction of new developments in agricultural mechanisation gathered pace, culminating in 1938 with the first commercially-viable self-propelled combine harvester the MH No 20. Meanwhile, Harry Ferguson was leading the world in the development of the modern tractor and the highly innovative Ferguson system. The inspired decision, taken in 1958 by these two giants of agricultural mechanisation, to merge their businesses led to the creation of the world s best-known farm equipment brand. Massey Ferguson has now sold more machines than any other manufacturer. 8

17 Planning for the Future Serious business. Massey Ferguson s plant at Beauvais is totally focussed on meeting the everincreasing demands of farmers the world over. It is the biggest AGCO-owned tractor manufacturing site in Europe and the largest of its kind in France. For over 50 years, Massey Ferguson has been the world s dominant tractor brand and is now France s biggest exporter of farm machinery. This centre of excellence is now made of two sites with a global surface area of more than 30 ha and is located to the North of Paris. Those sites have been boosted by massive investments in build technologies, tooling, design and efficiency. Staff numbers and expertise have also grown to generate an output of up to 20,000 tractors a year. As part of the AGCO organisation, sales of Massey Ferguson tractors and equipment represent more than a third of the parent company s turnover. The key strategy is, and always has been, to design, build and supply machines to meet the needs of every farming operation from simple and straightforward to those keen to take advantage of leading-edge technology. All backed up with the most reliable, round-the-clock after sales support, ensuring that dealership personnel worldwide are fully trained in the latest technological developments. 19

18 Every Massey Ferguson machine built at Beauvais has its own Tractor Quality Book which follows it throughout the build and testing processes, with all staff involved signing to confirm completion and checking of their specific task. In addition, quality control technicians inspect the work after each stage of assembly. Obsessive quest for quality Even before assembly, every single part is subjected to a range of quality checks; rear axles and transmissions being run on a test bench to ensure that all mechanical, electrical and hydraulic control functions are working perfectly and that noise levels are down to Massey Ferguson s exacting standards. All cab connections, controls and components are rigorously checked using a specially developed test computer. After exhaustive operational testing, tractors are run on a rolling road before all the boxes in a final 75-point check are ticked and the customer s specific requirements are met in full. 20

20 Lean manufacturing Recent years have seen several million euros invested in the development of the Lean Manufacturing project at Beauvais. This is driven by the quest for continual improvement and involves identifying and eliminating non-added value. This project has focused on restructuring the assembly lines and opening new facilities for cabs, in order to optimise the management of flow through the production units. 22

21 Operatives were specifically trained for the project and played a part in the reorganisation of their work stations. Improvements in the manufacturing processes, together with a better plan of establishment at the factory and the training of both operatives and managers resulted in a clear improvement in productivity and the Beauvais site s competitiveness. In addition, the working environment and the quality of assembly have also been enhanced. 27 Since becoming part of the AGCO group, Massey Ferguson has performed a pivotal role in the company s forward drive. AGCO was formed in 1990, following a management buy-out by senior personnel of the Deutz-Allis organisation. The AGCO initials were retained to galvanise the company s roots as the Allis Gleaner Corporation. A strategic policy of acquiring some of the world s premium agricultural machinery brands was put in place. Challenger, Fendt, Massey Ferguson, Valtra and GSI between them, now dominate the global farm power market, supplemented more recently by the move into top quality compatible implements. In 2006, Martin Richenhagen became AGCO s President and Chief Executive Officer. He has made great strides in enhancing the various brands market position in key markets around the world, overseeing steady and sustainable growth in what have sometimes been difficult economic conditions. 28 Connecting your farm enterprise like never before... New Technologies > Datatronic Control Centre Display The Datatronic 4-Control Centre Display (CCD) has a perfectly positioned 7 colour monitor. Mounted on the armrest, it is fully adjustable to allow optimum viewing of all the tractor s functions. The instrument panel is clear and concise and has been designed for optimum visibility. It has two main digital displays as well as an analogue rev counter. All main tractor warning functions can be viewed from here as well as engine coolant temperature, oil pressure, AdBlue and fuel tank levels, so you are always in total control of your machine. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) As mentioned earlier, Massey Ferguson tractors were the first to adopt and incorporate this technology proven by the road haulage industry, but now available to farmers. It involves the use of a urea-based fluid, held in a separate tank, which is introduced to the engine s exhaust gases, post-combustion. Not only does this process virtually eliminate harmful nitrous oxide and particulates being released into the atmosphere, but also delivers a serious reduction in fuel consumption, with no loss of engine power. 31
