In all other respects it is identical to the FlexPoint FP30 power supply.. Theory of Operation The FlexPoint unit is an optical network terminal (ONT) power supply providing 30W of Vdc primary and standby power. A customer-provided 0Vac or 30Vac, 50/60Hz power outlet provides primary power to the input of the FlexPoint unit. The AC voltage is then converted to a usable Vdc output. The power supply is to be installed near an AC power outlet. Backup power and batteries are user friendly with features including, but not limited to, long life, ease of replacement, purchase, installation, and disposal. Power status is provided to the customer via audible alarms, visual indicators, and electrically to the service operator via PacketCable alarms (not available on the FlexPoint FP30F). The interface between the FP30 and the SFU ONT is a dedicated 7-conductor cable (sold separately). The cable includes two 6-gauge stranded conductors supplying power to the load, and fi ve 4-gauge solid conductors for signaling to the SFU ONT. The FlexPoint 30F power supply utilizes a Type-F Coaxial connector and cable for the output connection to the SFU ONT. Upon loss of AC service, the duration of standby power is determined by one 7.Ah, or optional Ah battery installed in the unit. If necessary, the customer can connect an auxiliary battery backup power supply specifi cally a battery providing additional standby runtime. During a prolonged AC outage the unit monitors remaining battery capacity. When 5% of the battery capacity remains, the Vdc supply to the ONT will be interrupted while the unit enters a sleep mode, conserving the remaining capacity for emergency calls. Interruption of the Vdc supply to the ONT will continue until the AC Mains is restored or the customer initiates the Battery Emergency Use mode by pressing the Emergency Use button on the face plate. The unit supports two grounding schemes. ONTs located outdoors, typically have a #6 ground wire connection to a ground rod, while ONTs located indoors may not have access to a reliable low resistance safety ground connection. For outdoor ONTs, an ungrounded, fl oating DC return would be used. For indoor ONT installations without access to a reliable ground connection, a supplied ground shunt, when installed, ties the ONT safety ground to the AC ground prong. 7

9 .0 Introduction, continued.4 Models and Options The FlexPoint 30 is available in four models, and optional equipment includes three models of batteries from which to choose, a battery cover, a battery heater kit option for cold-weather installations, an interconnect cable, and a cable for auxiliary power applications. 10 .0 Installation CAUTION!. Installation and Connection Observe wiring harness polarity. Improperly connecting these wires can result in non-operation of the unit, cause equipment damage, and void the warranty.. Unpack and inspect the unit.. The unit is designed for use in a sheltered environment protected from rain and snow with a maximum ambient temperature of 46 C. Install the unit near an AC outlet. 3. Remove battery compartment door by pressing tab and opening door. 4. Determine the necessary cable length to provide appropriate service loops between the unit, the ONT, and the outlet. Plug the line cord into the receptacle on the back of the unit and secure with a wire tie. DO NOT plug the unit into an AC outlet until the last step of the installation procedure. 5. Mount to the wall with # fasteners or equivalent, using the keyholes for easy mounting. For the FlexPoint 30 model only: Cut and strip cable leads and attach to the 7- position connector, verifying correct conductor to pin alignment. See Table Plug the 7-conductor cable from the ONT into the 7-position connector and secure to strain relief with cable tie. See Figure -4. 7a. For the FlexPoint FP30F model only: Connect the outout coaxial cable to the connector and secure to strain relief with cable tie. See Figure -5. Installation tip: Pre-bend the cable before connecting to the circuit board. 12 .0 Installation, continued NOTE:. Installing the Battery. Connect the battery wiring harness (supplied) to the battery terminals (Fig. -6).. Connect the harness to the -pin connector (3) in the battery module (Fig. -7, -8). 3. Install the charged battery in the cradle as shown in (Fig. -9). The locking tab (4) secures it in place. The Battery LED will light at this time, and with the output cable connected, the unit will supply power to the load. The unit will not yet be on unless Battery Emergency Use button is pushed. 4. 13 .0 Installation, continued NOTE:.3 Installing the Safety Ground Shunt The unit can provide a safety ground to ONTs located indoors where a suitable ground connection is not available. Installing the supplied jumper ties the Vdc return to the AC ground prong. Safety ground shunt must be installed prior to powering up the system.. Remove this tab. Expose these pins 3. 14 3.0 Operation 3. Turn-Up. Plug the unit into AC Power.. The system LED () should light. Additional LEDs on the front panel of the FP30 indicate the state of the system. Their functions are: VISUAL STATUS INDICATORS 3 4 System (GREEN): The system indicator LED is on when power is available at the output. Input power could be derived from AC input or battery. Battery (GREEN): While the battery is discharging, the battery indicator LED will illuminate continuously until LED voltage reaches.7vdc; blinks when voltage drops below.7vdc. Replace Battery (RED): Battery replacement required (can indicate that the battery is missing). Auxiliary Power Source (GREEN): Indicates that an external power source with adequate voltage is connected to the FP30; blinks when providing power. BUTTONS 5 6 Silence Alarm: Press and hold button for approximately second to silence the audible alarm for 4 hours. Silence Alarm is acknowledged by a single chirp. Re-activate alarm circuit by pressing button again, which is acknowledged by two chirps. Battery Emergency Use: To restart the system, the Battery Emergency Use button is pressed (and held) for at least 0.5s Fig. 3-, Controls and Indicators 3. Verify the unit is functioning properly by unplugging it. After approximately 0 seconds the alarm should briefl y sound. After Amp-minute of discharge, the battery status LED () will light; after 5 Amp-minutes of discharge, the unit will activate the network alarm. 4. Re-plug the unit into an AC power outlet. The battery status LED () will go out. The unit is ready to be placed into service. 4

15 3.0 Operation, continued 3. Audible Alarms and Visual Indicators The table below details the audible alarms and visual indicators of the FP30. Approximately 0s after battery removal, system initiates battery detection routine. Battery detection runs every 5s when fl oat charging. Upon verifi cation, alarm tripped. The indicator will remain lit until the voltage is measured to be less the 0.5Vdc Auxiliary Providing Power AUX AUX LED (GREEN) blinks N/A N/A Indicates an external power source with adequate voltage is connected to the FP30/ FP30F. 3.3 Battery Table 3-, Audible Alarms and Visual Indicators Battery construction varies signifi cantly between manufacturers. Alpha Technologies recommends the use of qualifi ed batteries only. The auxiliary power source supplies power to load (ONT) if the internal battery capacity is totally depleted after the Emergency Battery button is activated. 5

16 3.0 Operation, continued 3.5 Operational Modes 3.5. Normal Mode This mode is defi ned as a state where the load is being supplied from AC input, and the battery is fl oating, charging or in the process of being tested. When the unit is initially powered-up, or whenever the input supply has been restored after an outage, the unit operates in a charge mode. Once the battery voltage has reached the full charge voltage the unit switches to fl oat mode. If the input voltage is less than the minimum AC input, the system switches to operating in back-up mode. After approximately 80 days of operation, the battery is tested to determine whether it has adequate capacity. It is tested when the following conditions are met:. The system is operating in fl oat mode. The battery is fully charged If the battery is not fully charged, or the system is not operating in fl oat mode when the test becomes due, the test is postponed until those conditions are met. If the AC input is lost, or the unit is overloaded during the battery test, it will be aborted and indefi nitely postponed until conditions are valid. Once a battery test has been successfully executed, another test will be scheduled to occur in 80 days, without regard to the test results Back-Up Mode The load is being supplied from the battery while the battery voltage is greater than.5vdc, which is approximately 5% of the state of charge. When the battery falls below this point it is disconnected Emergency Use Battery Emergency Use mode occurs after the back-up mode has fi nished, which the user initiates by pressing Battery Emergency Use button. During this mode the battery will be allowed to discharge until its voltage is 0.5Vdc, which is 0% state of charge. At this time the system will shutdown unless an auxiliary power source is available. The operator should be aware of the following: Reserve time with 0W load at 5 C is approximately 30 minutes. Capacity reserved for emergency use is approximately 5% Charging Mode Float charge maintains the battery at 00% capacity. If the battery is required to support operation, charging ceases. When primary power is restored, battery charging resumes and continues until one of the following occurs: Battery has reached 00% of capacity. Charging is reduced to fl oat charge level. Normal charge current is approximately 700mA. When the current falls below 700 ma, the mode changes to fl oat. In the event the current does not reduce, the software triggers the mode change. Another power failure occurs requiring battery support. Charging ceases until primary power is restored. Additional power is required by the ONT. Power is diverted from the battery charger and sent to the ONT. When demand for additional power ceases, normal battery charging resumes. 6 The battery is depleted. No special action is required to restore normal operation once primary power is restored.

17 3.0 Operation, continued 3.5 Operational Modes, continued Example Discharge Profile The following is graphical representation of an assumed load profi le with load shedding (video followed by data). Load shedding schedules vary by service operator. The time between back-up operation and emergency use operation is indeterminate. Actual times are dependant upon temperature, actual loading and the state of health of the standby battery.
