Electric Motors L&S Electric is pleased to offer the broadest range of An electric motor is a machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. For single and three phase electric motors, few companies in the upper Midwest are as knowledgeable or experienced as L&S Electric. Our extensive on-hand inventory includes a wide variety of motors. From fractional horsepower and up, these are examples of the motors we provide: Agricultural/Farm Duty Brake Explosion Proof IEC IEEE 841 Extra Severe Duty Inverter Duty Medium Voltage Mill and Chemical Premium Efficiency Pump Severe Duty Single Phase Stainless Steel Washdown Vector Duty Vertical AC AC and DC Motors Our knowledgeable staff specializes in careful motor identification and analysis and can recommend motors for new applications and replacement electric motors based on horsepower, rotating speed, frame size, enclosure type, required operating voltages, and duty cycles. Definite Purpose Motor A definite purpose motor is any motor designed with special mechanical features for use on specific applications. Some of the many designs are motors designed for car washes, pump motors, kilns, cooling towers, automotive, multi-speed applications and many more. 2

Electric Motors industrial AC and DC electric motors to our customers. Medium Voltage Motors Medium voltage motors are typically larger horsepower motors designed for pulp and paper mills and any other severe duty environments. Several of our manufacturers stock medium voltage motors and most of them offer medium voltage motors through production. Permanent Magnet Motors An AC permanent magnet motor has magnets embedded into the rotor assembly, which enables the rotor to align itself with the rotating magnetic field of the stator. These motors have zero slip (constant speed with load) and provide higher torque, efficiency, and draw less current than comparable induction motors. Permanent magnet DC motors are much more efficient, lighter, and compact than comparably sized wound DC motors as the permanent magnets replace the field windings. Permanent magnet DC motors are constructed in two broad categories: brushed/commutator and brushless. The permanent magnet DC commutator motor uses a rotating armature winding with a stationary field of permanent magnets. A permanent magnet DC brushless motor has a reverse construction: a rotating field of permanent magnets with a stationary armature winding externally commutated by an electronic control. 3

Drives AC Drives Controlling the speed of an AC electric motor is possible through a variable frequency drive (VFD), also referred to as adjustable frequency drives, AC drives and variable speed drives. By controlling the voltage and hertz that is going into the motor, it allows you to adjust the speed of the motor. DC Drives DC drives and motors remain common in industries such as metals, cranes, mining and printing. The current trend is to replace DC systems with new AC drives and motors to reduce maintenance. This can, however, often be a significant task that requires the machinery to be taken out of service for an extended period while mechanical and electrical rework is completed. Medium Voltage Drives Medium voltage drives enable soft-starting and variable speed control of processes with high power demands. They help reduce energy costs, component count, maintenance and motor wear. Soft Starters Reduced voltage soft starters are compact, multi-functional, easy to install, and easy to program. They are designed to control acceleration and deceleration of three-phase motors, with options available for multiple current ratings. 4

Brakes Brakes are an external device, or accessory, that brings a running motor to a standstill and/or holds a load. Can either be added to a motor or incorporated later. Brakes operate on a very simple principle: while the motor is running with power engaged, an electromagnet within the brake pulls back the pressure plate, allowing the friction and discs motor shaft to rotate freely. Clutches A clutch is a mechanical device for engaging and disengaging a motor often used when many starts and stops are required. When the clutch is activated, current flows through the electromagnet producing a magnetic field. The rotor portion of the clutch becomes magnetized and sets up a magnetic loop that attracts the armature. The armature is pulled against the rotor and a frictional force is generated at contact. Within a relatively short time, the load is accelerated to match the speed of the rotor, thereby engaging the armature and the output hub of the clutch. Gearboxes/Gearmotors Gearboxes are used in a very wide range of industrial fields. Thanks to the use of gearboxes, rotation force (torque) is used to produce a much greater rotation force, and a slow rate of revolution. In many industries, the gearbox, which is the equipment that transmits mechanical power, is an essential piece of equipment. Power Transmission 5

Power Distribution Protective Relays Protective relays are microprocessor-based devices that eliminate unnecessary trips, isolate faults, protect motors and breakers, and provide system information to help better manage your system. Transformers Transformers convert electrical power to electrical power of a different voltage. In this device both primary and secondary windings are usually stationary, and are wound on a common magnetic core. Low Voltage Transformers Silica Resin Encapsulated Transformers Hazardous Location Transformers K Factor 600V Class General Purpose Three Phase 600V Class General Purpose Single Phase 600V Class General Purpose Medium Voltage Transformers Cast Coil Transformers Triplex Design Transformers Unit Substation Distribution Transformers General Purpose Medium Voltage Motor Control & Protection We offer a complete line of motor control products for your motor management systems. 7 Power Distribution Circuit Protection L&S Electric partners with multiple manufacturers of circuit protection devices such as fuses, fuse elements, fusible links and circuit breakers. Circuit protection devices are designed to protect wires and connectors from being damaged by excess current flow caused by an over current or short circuit. Excess current causes excess heat, which causes circuit protection to open circuit. Circuit protection devices are available in a variety of types, shapes, and specific current ratings. Circuit Breaker Applications/Options Arcflash Reduction Maintenance System: A circuit breaker equipped with an Arcflash Reduction Maintenance System can improve safety by providing a simple and reliable method to reduce fault clearing time. Equipment Life Extension and Modernization: offers a host of solutions for aging power systems to extend the useful life of electrical power systems. Hydraulic-Magnetic Circuit Protection: offers a number of equipment, branch and main circuit breaker. Low Voltage Air Power Circuit Breakers: A low voltage power circuit breaker. Medium Voltage Vacuum Circuit Breakers: Provides centralized control and protection of medium voltage power equipment and circuits. Molded Case Circuit Breakers: Protection for low voltage distribution systems and increased performance in less space than many standard breakers or similar fusible devices. Switchgear Switchgear is a term that describes circuit breakers and electrical disconnect switches which are joined together to control and isolate electrical equipment. This merge clears any faults found downstream in an electricity distribution network and also turns on or off the power. Our L&S Electric sales team can assist in identifying your switchgear needs. 7
