APPENDIX A A What a disaster! This year, ice didn t form along the coastline. High waves are crashing against the banks of the St. Lawrence, which are eroding much too quickly.

APPENDIX A B Oh no! The pack ice is getting smaller and thinner every year. Without this habitat, polar bears and ringed seals will be in danger of extinction. We must save them!

APPENDIX A C The Arctic and Antarctic are melting! Glaciers are shrinking. Sea levels are rising. Seas are getting warmer, too.

APPENDIX A D Living on the Gaspé coast will be difficult soon if the sea level keeps rising.

APPENDIX A E Help! More dry days means a greater risk of forest fires. An even larger area of northwestern Canada burned this year than last year.

APPENDIX A F Yikes! Industries emit a lot of greenhouse gases every year. The carbon dioxide emitted from chimneys stays in the air for many years.

APPENDIX A G Flood alert! Rapid snowmelt and heavy rainfall in spring have caused this disaster.

APPENDIX A H Aha! The sky is mine. I get around a lot faster than those cars stuck in a traffic jam. Hack hack! Even when they re not moving, they burn gas and emit greenhouse gases.

APPENDIX A I Oh no! Another herd of cows to satisfy your appetites. Ok, they re pretty, but they re always digesting and burping methane a very harmful greenhouse gas.

APPENDIX A J Humans produce a lot of waste that has to be disposed of. Whether it s put in a landfill or burned, it emits greenhouse gases. Plus, some waste ends up in the sea and kills a lot of animals.

LET S TALK ABOUT ENERGY! Appendix B Energy Memory Game

APPENDIX B Source of energy I produce light and heat that makes life on Earth possible. Sun Source of energy I blow strongly on mountaintops and by the sea. Wind

APPENDIX B Source of energy The faster I run, the more energy I produce. Water Source of energy I m an organic material used to make paper. Wood

APPENDIX B Source of energy When I come out of the ground, I m a black, sticky liquid. I have to be refined before being used. Oil Source of energy I come from dead animals and plants that have been decomposing for millions of years. Natural gas

APPENDIX B Source of energy You can find me in mines. Coal Invention You can usually find me on roofs. I can t produce energy at night. Solar panel

APPENDIX B Invention You can find me in open, windy areas. I turn like a windmill. Wind turbine Invention Moving water spins my turbines. Hydroelectric dam

APPENDIX B Invention I m useful for heating homes. I produce smoke, which goes out through a chimney. Fireplace Invention I help you get from one place to another. Car

APPENDIX B Invention I m China s main type of power station. Coal-fired power station Invention You use me to cook food outside in the summer. Barbecue

LET S TALK ABOUT ENERGY! Appendix C Get Around Emission-Free Game

APPENDIX C CARPOOLING My neighbour carpools to work. She rides in the same car as my parents every day. Carpooling reduces the number of cars on the road and greenhouse gas emissions. GO FORWARD 5 KM ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION A new bike path has just been built. It runs from one end of the city to the other, passing various stores and interesting places. Biking is a great mode of active transportation RENEWABLE ENERGY In Quebec, 96% of our electrical energy comes from hydroelectricity. It s the main source of energy used to charge electric cars. Unlike gas, this source of energy won t run out GO FORWARD 5 KM PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION When the bell goes, all your classmates hop on the bus to go to the mall. Thanks to the bus lane, you overtake all the cars stuck in traffic. Taking the bus in rush hour saves time. CHARGING STATIONS Two new charging stations have been installed in the neighbourhood. This means people with electric cars will find somewhere to charge up their car more quickly. In Quebec, there are over 1,000 charging stations. NONRENEWABLE ENERGY Drilling for oil causes a lot of pollution and emits a lot of greenhouse gases. GO BACK 10 KM TRAFFIC A massive traffic jam stops cars from moving forward. Loads of greenhouse gases come out of cars exhausts even when they re not moving. GO BACK 15 KM NONRENEWABLE ENERGY There s a growing demand for oil because the number of cars on the road is increasing. If demand continues to grow, there won t be enough oil for everyone. Oil is a nonrenewable source of energy. GO BACK 5 KM GAS-POWERED CAR Only 14% of the energy in gas is used to make the car move. The rest is lost in the form of heat. What a waste of energy and resources! On top of that, gas-powered cars emit greenhouse gases! GO BACK 5 KM ENERGY CONSUMPTION The city has bought several electric cars that residents can use to drive to work. Electric cars use 5 times less energy than gas-powered cars. ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION You biked to school this morning. GO FORWARD 20 KM GAS-POWERED CAR Your neighbours started their car remotely 10 minutes before leaving to warm it up. Greenhouse gases are released from the exhaust. GO BACK 10 KM

APPENDIX C CARPOOLING Three people are going in the same direction. They decide to take one car rather than three to get there. By travelling together, they cause less pollution and save money. Carpooling rocks! NATURAL AIR CONDITIONING You re mum picks you up from school in the car. It s really hot inside. She decides to open the windows rather than turning on the AC. You save a lot of energy by opening the windows! GO FORWARD 5 KM ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION Your parents gave you a scooter for your birthday. Since spring, you ve used it every day to get to school. The scooter moves along thanks to power from your muscles. It s perfect for short trips and produces no emissions! ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION After school, you walk home along the new sidewalks. GO FORWARD 15 KM CHARGING STATIONS Thanks to the new charging station at the mall near your home, your mum can charge her car while she s shopping. GAS-POWERED CAR The principal has made the school parking lot bigger so that all of the teachers have a space. Several trees have been cut down in the process. Since then, the number of teachers driving to school has doubled. GO BACK 5 KM TRANSPORTATION COCKTAIL Every day, your dad drives to the nearest parking lot and then takes a bus to work. By combining modes of transportation, your dad reduces his greenhouse gas emissions. He could even work while he s on the bus. ENGINE RUNNING Your mum picks you up from school. She leaves the engine running while she waits for you. An idling engine emits twice as many air pollutants in 10 seconds as when the car is moving. GO BACK 5 KM ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION The principal has just had bike racks installed in the schoolyard. More students can bike to school now. SHARED TRANSPORTATION The mayor of your city has given the green light for a new car rental program that allows people to share the same car every day. BUS All your classmates take the same bus to go home. Public transportation uses less energy. HEAT ISLAND You re strolling the streets and all of sudden you feel a lot of heat. This is called a heat island. Greenhouse gases from gas-powered cars and the many roads and buildings contribute to this rise in temperature. GO BACK 5 KM

APPENDIX C ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION Your dad walks you to school every day. You walk one kilometre in under 10 minutes. By walking to school you get some fresh air before starting class GO FORWARD 5 KM ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION No need for a car! You and your sister ride your bikes to go shopping at local stores. ELECTRIC BUS All your classmates take the school s new electric bus home. This mode of transportation doesn t emit greenhouse gases ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION Your friend invites you for dinner at his place. Your friend s mum offers to pick you up in the car. You decide to ride your bike instead. NATURAL HEATING Your mum is going to drive you to school. Instead of starting the engine a few minutes before leaving to warm up the car, you dress up warmly to save energy. ELECTRIC BUS The mayor of the city has just purchased two new electric buses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by transportation. He s happy because the two new buses don t emit GHGs. GO FORWARD 5 KM ELECTRIC CAR Your parents have just purchased a new electric car. At least 85% of the energy stored in the battery is used to make it move. GO FORWARD 5 KM CAR-FREE DAY You organize a Car-Free Day at school with your classmates. All the teachers and students come to school by bike or public transit. ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION You and your classmates write a letter to the principal asking for two more bike racks. You d like to see more students biking to school. GO FORWARD 5 KM ENERGY CONSUMPTION The city has bought several electric cars, which residents can use to drive to work. An electric car uses 5 times less energy than a gas-powered car. ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION Your parents have just bought you a new skateboard. You used it this morning to go to the store. GO FORWARD 5 KM BIKE SHARING The mayor of your city has set up a new bike sharing system. You can take a bike from a station anywhere in the city and leave it at another one. GO FORWARD 5 KM

Ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l Électrification des transports Minister of Transport 500 Boulevard René-Lévesque West, 16 th Floor Montreal, Quebec H2Z 1W7 Date : Dear Minister: My name is. I m a student in Grade in class. I did an activity with my class and learned that. I also compared the carbon footprints of three modes of transportation. In 180 school days, I would contribute to the emission of kg CO 2 if I travelled by. I would contribute to the emission of kg CO 2 if I took a and kg CO 2 if I took an electric bus to school. I think that we have a lot of transportation problems and that people, companies and governments need to do something about it soon. I also think. I suggest to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Thank you for helping me with my project. Sincerely,
