4 TOP OF RAIL - RAILHEAD CONDITIONING Swiss know-how for the prevention of rail squeak on bends IGRALUB, the TOTAL SERVICES PROVIDER has been dealing with the problem of rail squeak on bends for more than 20 years. This experience guarantees you comprehensive advice in finding a successful solution. IGRALUB offers: the creation of a common solution the high-tech HeadLub lubricant the optimal application systems TOR Control system with GPS service support with the introduction and in the maintenance. The cause of rail squeak on bends is the stick-slip effect of the inner rail on the top-of-the-rail and the wheel flange contact to the outer rail. In order to prevent rail squeak on bends, the vibration excitation between the wheel and the rail must be reduced or prevented. This is achieved by reducing the coefficient of friction. A lubricant is applied between the friction parts as a friction modifier, thereby reducing the coefficient of friction. Lubrication systems must guarantee that the application of the lubricant is placed: at a specific location(inner or outer rail in a curve, top-of-rail/rail sides), at a specific time and for a specific duration (hours / daily use), in a controlled quantity. These three functions are the minimum requirements for a successful lubrication system. Two main groups of systems are currently offered on the market: stationary and mobile lubrication systems. Mobile lubrication systems are mostly spray systems. They are simple and cost-friendly to maintain. Installation in a small proportion of the existing vehicles should already be sufficient to treat the entire route network. Stationary systems stand alongside the rails. In separate systems of lubrication material either at the edge of the outer rail or rail applied to the rail head on the inner rail. Controlling TOR is an independent electronic control. Because of location detection signals (GPS, control systems) TOR recognizes specified lubrication points before curves and rail points that are registered on a card, and passed on corresponding signals (direction, braking, speed, weather, time, etc.),are defined in spray commands. TOR meets the requirements for the treatment of the rail head and is successfully used for the rail head conditioning. Manual control In this case the command to spray the rail head is given manually by means of a pushbutton in the driver s cab. This set-up is recommended for small railways and mountain railways. The decisive point here is that environmentally friendly lubricants are as effective as conventional products. There should be no increased consumption, turning the advantage of biodegradability into a deficit. This would not be in the interest of the environment. IGRALUB therefore only uses environ-mentally friendly lubricants that make no compromises and offer optimum performance. One particular aspect for us is environmental compatibility, evidence of which is required in an increasing number of sectors. Products with our symbol guarantee biodegradability according to the latest European test methods. The most effective environmental protection is a lubricant, that achieves the maximum effect with the slowest possible quantities reduces friction to a minimum only has an effect where applied, and does not pollute the surrounding environment is highly biodegradable. The following tests are used to determine the biodegradability of organic substances: CEC-L-33-A-93 was considered to be the general test for lubricants until recently. IGRALUB therefore also had its products tested according to this method, and still makes use of some of the results today. This test version is no longer used nowadays. OECD 301 B, also known as the Storm Test, is the new, recognised test. The procedure is based on the production of CO2. A biological degradability is determined at the end of the so-called 10-Day-Test-Window and after a test period of 28 days. If the product has reached the required degradation level of 60% at both the end of the 10-day window and also after 28-day incubation, it will be designated as - readily biodegradable -.
