1 INDUSTRIALLY DEFINED PROBLEMS: (Exclusively for II and III years) The only stupid question is the question that you don t ask, think out of the box. Do you want to challenge the conventions? Do you have a lot of question? Do you want to prove something? Alright, here is your chance to change your dreams to reality. IDP (Industrially Defined Problems) is basically used for meeting the main goals of an industry. The main goal of any industry would be to optimize the product yield while minimizing the costs of production. The main purpose of this event would be to test the expertise of the participants in process calculations and Engineering concepts. The participants would be given a problem faced by the industry. The solution presented should be obtained through vigorous calculations while keeping in mind the economics of process. Got the nerves to solve some real-life engineering problems??? EVENT FORMAT: RULES AND REGULATIONS: Maximum no. of team members is 3. Submission of abstract (in a word document) for about 250 words before the due date. Based on the peering review of the abstract, few solutions will be selected for presenting the paper. Each team can choose to solve any one of the problem statements.

2 Only one entry per team is allowed. Any accepted CAD software can be used. (Not Mandatory) E.g. AutoCAD, Solid works, Catia, ProE, Autodesk inventor, etc. Participants have to mail their Team Description Papers (TDP) for the preliminary round. The selection for the finals would be based on this. The designs can be altered for the finals but change of problem statement will not be entertained. Stress analysis, flow/thermal analysis, mechanical simulation will be awarded extra points.(not mandatory) PLAGIARISM, in any way, is strictly prohibited. PROBLEM STATEMENT 1: Clutching and gearing mechanism for the Physically Disabled. Introduction Driving a four wheeler is always a great experience. But this is slightly confined to normal persons. For a physically challenged, driving a car is a Herculean task or a distant dream. So there is always a need to help them overcome their inability to drive the vehicle. Some of the solutions to this problem like automatic transmission of gears, hand-clutch etc. exists but is expensive and there is a need to have an economical mechanism. Problem statement To design a mechanism which is an add-on to the present day vehicles with a prior assumption that we have a physically handicapped person (driver) with no left leg because of which he/she cannot operate the clutch and gears simultaneously and with the steering wheel on the right side (typical Indian cars). Assuming he/she can manage the acceleration and brake pedals using his/her right leg, the task is to design a mechanism that can co-ordinate the gearing and clutching processes simultaneously. Following factors should be kept in mind during design phase: 1. The mechanism should either be a simple add-on or an integral equipment to the existing structure in the interior of a four wheeler 2. Comfort level of the physically handicapped (driver)

3 3. Mechanism should be manually operated 4. Failure or near failures should be strictly avoided 5. Manufacturability of the components involved 6. Economic aspects 7. Positioning of the mechanism 8. Portability of the model 9. Compactness and structural stability 10. Justification of why this model can be seen as a cheaper way of going rather than the other alternatives 11. If mechanism has any extra features, especially if it helps the person using it, they will be suitably rewarded. PROBLEM STATEMENT 2: Four Wheel Steering. Introduction Haven t you ever wondered why the rear wheels of your car don t steer when you turn the steering wheel? Will steering the rear wheels also help handling the car better? Here is a chance to find that out. Problem Statement modes. Design a steering system that can steer all the four wheels of the car in the following different Mode 1: To help parallel parking and to shift lanes at high speeds the rear wheels can steer in the same direction to the front wheels meaning that the car can crab steer - move to the sides without changing the direction of its faces. Mode 2: To help easy maneuverability in congested areas, turning radius can be decreased by steering the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels. There exists a possibility of achieving a turning radius of zero. The car can actually rotate in place.

4 Mode 3: A normal steering mode with rear wheels detached to the steering system. The steering system should consist of an easy mechanism to shift among these three modes depending on the requirement. Please keep in mind that all the inputs to the steering system must come from the single steering wheel. It is also important to mention whether your design would be applicable to a front wheel or rear wheel or four wheel drive cars. Following factors to be kept in mind during the design phase 1. The mechanism should be completely mechanical (no electronics/ power steering to be included) 2. Effects on the performance of the car 3. User friendliness 4. Complexity of the system 5. Manufacturability of the components involved 6. Feasibility to install 7. Additional applications (apart from those mentioned in modes 1, and 2) 8. Failure or near failures should be strictly avoided PROBLEM STATEMENT 3: The New Paralympics. Introduction We always miss to recognize an interesting sports festival that happen in parallel with the Olympics. It is called the Paralympics, involving athletes with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities. But designers like us should never miss this. Read more to understand why... In making the disable participate in those events technology plays a huge role. Assistive devices like prosthetics, bionic legs have always helped people to realize their dreams. Apart from these expensive assistive devices various rational designs (Example: racing wheelchair) have helped these people achieve their goals in a less expensive way. They have never stopped with a simple wheel chair. Designs improved as days passed and there is a huge list of assistive devices today to suit a variety of differently able involved in a variety of sports. But the concern here is, these games and designs are not universal. Not all disabled persons can use it. If you look carefully, all those participating athletes would be having lower leg disabilities or upper leg disabilities. But think about a person who has amputated arm and leg. They won t be able to participate in most of the games like cycling, running, even wheelchair racing. One possible solution is the use of prosthetics, but prosthetics are very expensive ranging from 2 lakhs to 20 lakhs. So here the need for design arises.

5 Problem statement To change the existing design of those various intellectual assists that are in use in today s Paralympics to fit a person who has an arm and a leg amputated. To spice it up even more, we would like the teams to design a new game (that is currently not present in Paralympics) for these people to comfortably play with the assistive devices the teams have designed. 1. Failure or near failures should be strictly avoided PROBLEM STATEMENT 4: Wireless Knowledge Transmission Introduction: More than 6 decades ago, a million hopes looked up to a common identity as a nation was born out of determination, struggle, grit and the life and toil of the beleaguered patriots. 65 years down the line, we are one of the fastest growing economies in the world, yet stooped in superstition, benumbed by ancient tenets and most importantly, victims of capitalism and exclusive growth. In this era of electronics and wireless technology it is fascinating to imagine the use of such cutting edge technology for the cause of spreading education amongst the masses, especially in the villages. Problem Statement: The idea is to design a device using some form of wireless or mobile technology for knowledge sharing in villages or as self-education tool. 1. User Friendliness. 2. Bluetooth Broadcasters and Bluetooth FM. 3. Cost. 4. Ease of installation. PROBLEM STATEMENT 4: Four Sided Television

6 Introduction: The world is now a window away from our eyes, and the technological marvel in a television has made it possible. If sitting in a remote town in India, I can see astronauts scale the moon, why not think beyond in making one of the better technologies in the modern day world, better still? A foursided television certainly needs thinking out of the box. A window to the world, we have 3D televisions, flat razor edge LED panels with 150 deg viewing and scores of other modern technology that people are going gaga about. Few have dreamt the likes of a four-sided television that provides 360 degree viewing. Problem Statement: The idea is to provide the basic design of an innovative technology to provide 360 deg viewing in a fully functional four sided television. A television in the middle of a room and people all around it enjoy the world through it, out of the box indeed. 7 Introduction: Minds on the margin are not marginal minds Our food generates Adinosine triphosphates (ATP) in our body, our energy currency that keeps us alive. This energy is used by humans in a multitude of ways, both involuntary and voluntary actions in day-to-day life. Human pulse is one of the most interesting sources of bio-energy that has got scientists thinking over the years. Problem statement: The idea is to design a small battery that can use the energy from human pulse, to power watches or for other small applications. It s all about being human here, so give your thought a tweak and set out to harness your own energy to power the world around you. 1. Small battery 2. High withstanding capacity 3. Increased efficiency 4. reliability PROBLEM STATEMENT 5: Electricity from slow moving canals Introduction: Almost 75% of the earth is covered with water bodies comprising mainly of oceans and rivers, having slow moving waves. These waves have a potential to generate a new, reliable, affordable and alternative energy source. There are many devices and appliances developed globally which turn the potentially destructive vibrations in water into clean, renewable energy. They do not need waves, tides, turbines or dams. It s an unequalled hydrokinetic energy system that relies on vortex induced vibrations. Problem statement: The window of opportunity that electricity can be possibly generated from such slow moving water proves a great chance to develop clean and renewable energy, through an

8 appropriate harnessing device. The idea is to design a simple mechanism for such a device. With this breakthrough, we can look at a bright future of self-sustaining co-operative societies or the use of electricity thus generated for street-lighting and the like. 1. simple mechanism 2. ease of installation 3. cost estimation 4. increased production of electricity
