1 Type cover headline Type cover subhead The Evolving Power Scenario: Opportunities and Challenges ABB Colloquium 2010 August 29 - September 1 Interlaken, Switzerland
2 The evolving power scenario: Opportunities and challenges Global demand for energy continues to rise and is expected to increase by more than 50 per cent by Demand for electricity is anticipated to almost double in that same time frame! While the need for energy and electricity continues to grow, so does the urgency to address environmental issues. Climate change concerns are now high on the global agenda and nations around the world are looking at ways to address the challenge. A significant amount of energy is lost in the value chain from primary source to ultimate consumption and ABB solutions based on existing technologies can reduce these losses by 20 to 30 per cent. If we can generate power more efficiently, reduce transmission losses, manage distribution networks more intelligently and use electricity more productively in factories, offices and homes, we can make a visible difference. Renewables will also play an increasing role in this effort, with wind and solar power generation becoming more viable. These renewables will then need to be integrated into an electricity grid that must be prepared to cope with intermittent and more distributed power generation sources. At the same time, we need to ensure a reliable, efficient and secure electricity supply. As the electrical grid evolves, consumers will also play their part. In the past, supply just followed demand but going forward, consumption will also need to be controlled in order to create some balance as we increasingly deploy intermittent energy generation sources. This will mean more control and active influencing of consumption patterns. So, on the whole, the entire power value chain will need to become more flexible, interconnected and smarter, to address these new challenges and opportunities. ABB remains committed to developing and deploying the latest technologies to make its customers more competitive by enabling power capacity, enhancing reliability, improving energy efficiency and lowering environmental impact. With a 125 year heritage of technology and innovation and a presence in over 100 countries, ABB continues to shape the grid of the future, thereby facilitating power and productivity for a better world. 2 Invitation ABB Colloquium 2010
3 Invitation ABB Colloquium 2010 will be held in Interlaken, Switzerland from August 29 to September 1, This is our main Power event, held every other year and was initiated more than 30 years ago. At this two-day customer event, which usually follows the discussions held at Cigré in Paris we invite a select gathering of senior executives and thought leaders from power utilities, industry and other domain experts from all over the world. The symposium focuses on technology from a business perspective and is conducted in the form of best-practice sharing, technology presentations, plenary sessions and discussion forums. The principal objective of the ABB Colloquium is to stimulate discussion and exchange experiences from all over the world on key sector trends and technology developments. Besides serving as a platform for sharing thoughts and opinions, the event also provides an excellent networking opportunity. The overall theme of this year s Colloquium is the Evolving Power Scenario and the opportunities and challenges of balancing the growing need for electricity while addressing climate change concerns. As part of this theme, we will focus on three main inter-related topics - integration of renewables, energy efficiency and power reliability. We are pleased to invite you to the ABB Colloquium 2010 and would be delighted to have you with us for a stimulating, interactive and thought-provoking event. We look forward to seeing you in Interlaken! Yours sincerely, Peter Leupp Head of Power Systems Bernhard Jucker Head of Power Products ABB Colloquium 2010 Invitation 3
4 Program Renewable energy In order to meet the CO2 reduction targets, most countries plan a substantial increase in the use of renewable energy sources for electricity generation. The scope of this topic will highlight examples of existing installations or future projects including benefits and challenges. Necessary adaptation to regulatory frameworks, incentives for investors and general market conditions will be addressed. The combination of large and central power plants, combined with small, remote and distributed generation sources will also be discussed. In this context the changing role of transmission and distribution grids will be a key focal point. Energy efficiency The transmission and distribution grid will need to adapt in order to integrate renewable energy sources. In most economies around the world, the existing power infrastructure is inadequate to do so. Grids will need to cope with intermittent sources of energy and at the same time maintain reliability and operate efficiently. For this they will also need to become smarter. As part of this topic, we will review technologies that can help enhance efficiency across the value chain with examples such as the deployment of higher voltage levels, flexible AC systems, HVDC, and storage as well as the latest control and communication systems on the transmission and distribution level. Reliability Reliable electricity generation, transmission and distribution requires a multi-dimensional array of technologies, synchronized on a real-time basis. Over the decades electricity networks have evolved based on a stable and controllable generation footprint serving a fluctuating but predictable demand pattern. This is now about to change with renewable generation being more remote and intermittent in relation to loads. How will these challenges be met? In what way do governments, utilities and industries need to adapt? How can we ensure the reliability of grids and at the same time make them smarter? These are some of the questions we shall seek to address in our exploration of this topic.
